Why the lanyards?

I, too, think lanyards look very dorky. AND on top of that, did you know that the #2 OSHA safety violation is due to lanyards. Lanyards caught in machinery, lanyards catch lots of places. One lady a few years ago DIED when her lanyard got caught in the copy machine. She couldn't get it free and she strangled.

Buy some clothes with pockets. They even make bathing suit coverups with a couple of small pockets. Look at some of the Hawaiian clothing lines-surfers sure aren't wearing lanyards to hold their money or ID.

The good thing I don't plan to do any copying or work with heavy equipment while on a cruise. I love not having to keep up with anything and not having to worry about something falling out of her pocket.

I love my lanyard! I wear a lot of sundresses on the cruise and they don't have pockets. Having one lanyard is much easier than buying a whole new wardrobe, as someone suggested! Mine is beaded and pretty so I don't mind wearing it at all! :)

I am also one that doesn't care what others think. And on our cruise I made a point to watch and I estimated about 75% of people were wearing lanyards!

All lanyards where I live have to be quick release, like a cats collar just for this reason.

Gotta say I didn't notice, but lanyards are the norm here, we even have them for our guys, we have something like 10-15 different passes/ID's/keys for each guy so they usually have several lanyards each.

Yes, it is a law for OSHA and I would assume Canadian seeing as how you are Canadian for safety reasons AT WORK. But cruise ships are not US based nor are they REQUIRED to comply with US OSHA laws for things they sell in their gift shops.

And I know lanyards we got a few years ago from a TA for a cruise weren't quick release. They were the kind you get at Walmart for $1.50 except they had the TA's agency name on them. They went in the trash.

Just reading through this thread I will bet better than 65% of the lanyards people have on cruise ships are NOT quick release, particularly ones that are beaded or fancy.

Amazing what sort of discussion develops when one poster starts talking about another's gear looking dorky...

FTR, I figure I look like I'm travelling as lightly as possible without losing that all-important plastic card. The one I usually wear has worked as a conversation starter. And that works for me!

It just occurred to us that if we purchased several lanyards of varied colours we could use them to coordinate with our outfits they would be " The fashion item to have" .

Also if joined together they could be used for a small washing line , they could also be used to secure your suitcase shut in case the lock breaks, handy for a belt around ones trousers when the old one won't do up due to overeating

Any more suggestions ?

No bridges today. Haven't bought any for a long time. I spend too much time on the East Coast and have seen too many 3 card monte games.

I just asked one of my late husband's very close friends because I knew it happened at a power plant. They were both engineers at various power plants. And I KNEW it was a really big deal because after that FPC and NRC REALLY got into the act on safety both with office type lanyards, lanyards for guys working around the turbines and generators and lanyards for elevated work.

It was 1992-Grand Coulee-a contract office worker for Bechtel. If I can find an article from that long ago, I will post it.

IF you carefully read my post, I said COVERUPS.

So here are a couple of pictures of coverups with pockets which would suit most anyone.

Rainbow One-Piece and Beach Cover-ups

http://www.ebay.com/itm/MADE-IN-NEPAL-100-COTTON-SARONG-STYLE-WOMENS-PANTS-NATURAL-CREAM-COLOUR-/160700885006

The pants are very often made with small pockets inside the waist band and are made as both pants and wrap type sarongs (these particular ones are not but the ones with pockets are everywhere in CA, Hawaii and Asia). I have one of each style and a credit card/room key card plus a folded $20 (or $100 if you are lucky enough to have a spare $100) fits VERY nicely with no bulge. These pants/sarongs are made all over Hawaii by various companies and are even sold at the ABC stores.

If Hawaiian/California female surfers are not wearing board shorts, they generally have one of these laying around to keep money and an ID, credit card or room key in. I'm 65, have surfed since I was 12 and still prefer to surf in board shorts if I get the chance to surf decent waves. I lOVE the Velcro pockets on board shorts and you don't have to keep pulling down the butt of your swimsuit when you wipe out (which I do much more frequently than I used to).

And on top of coverups, you can keep your key card and cash in your flip flops. Sure beats the heck out of lanyards that SCREAM I am a cruise ship tourist. No wonder people get mugged walking around in Europe and some places in the Caribbean. Might as well put up a sign-I've got a few extra bucks, do you need some???

LOL! We could use them to lassoo (sp?) a passing waiter to get some drinks!

I never thought of lanyards as dorky except on land. But that's just me. I do tend to think that I look dorky in a coverup with pockets. It reminds me my grandmother's "housecoats." Others look cute as can be, but I think at 6'1" I can't pull it off. My board shorts have pockets, but they are so shallow I'm afraid I'd lose my card! I think I'll stick to my "dorky" lanyard on the ship and save my purse for trips ashore.

But no matter which "dorky" look you might choose, may your drinks be cold and your cruise card ever within reach! :)

The OP did not mention on or off the ship. And with quite a few posting that they tuck them inside their clothes, that would most likely be OFF the ship.

I wish I could find Budget Queen's description of a group of tourists she ran into on a city bus in Europe. EVERYONE with their lanyards hanging around their necks, passports stuck in shirt pockets. The description was absolutely hilarious. They didn't even need the sign-they should have just started passing out money and valuables before they got mugged or scammed. It was THAT obvious.

I don't own a purse except for a couple of evening bags so everything I own has pockets that actually hold something. Billabong and Roxy make board shorts with pockets that are just slightly larger than a credit card and are either velcro or lycra close. They also make them with two REAL pockets that are not as large as cargo pants pockets but big enough for an I phone. Hurley makes one with two pockets INSIDE the waist band (the pattern is on a yoke, not one solid piece from waist to end of the leg). Roxy makes the most colorful ones (a lot of Hawaiian prints). Not cheap but they last forever.

As you said, "may your drinks be cold and your cruise card ever within reach". YAY!!!!

I have a very small cross body purse that I wear during the daytime. It has my kindle, tissues, small wallet and hand sanitizer. I use a lanyard but just to clip to my purse so it's handy when I sit down at a slot machine. My card is not on display it's tucked into an exterior pocket if it's not being used in the casino.

Other than that ridiculous tale about the woman choked by the copier, I would ask why not wear a lanyard? It's convenient, requires no clothing purchase, and prevents card loss. The only time I don't wear a lanyard while on a cruise is when I'm wearing formal clothes. I wear the lanyard not to show status but for convenience. But really, why do you even care if somebody else's past passenger status is displayed. I wore a lanyard on my first cruise. I fully intend wear one on my 25th Cruise. And I don't really give a darn what anybody thinks about it.

I have this for when I'm out on my bike or walking the dog when we will be stopping by somewhere for a cool beverage:

http://sahalie.blair.com/p/accessories/view-all-accessories/wrist-wallet/pc/1946/sc/1954/46139.uts

If I was so inclined to be out an about on a cruise with no pockets available, I would use this! Put me in the column of the "no lanyard" group. I had to use one for a job once; I made my own from African trade beads. I still didn't like having to wear it...

Oh I just think those are tacky but hey wear'em, you like like'em and that's all that counts. I'll stick with my life threatening lanyard because really I am on vacation and I AM a tourist, so who cares, I don't. I certainly don't surf, never have, never wanted to, never will...Hey but wear what you want. Now...where is my fanny pack! Wooohooo
