Should I Skip Nassau?

A few months back I had started a thread asking if I should go to Cozumel or the Bahamas. The feedback I got gave me the feeling that the Bahamas aren't so great. So now we are going on the Breeze Dec. 2nd. and I"m wondering should I just save money and stay on the ship that day? It's a 7 day cruise and goes to Grand Turk and Jamaica. I plan on definitely getting off the ship in Jamaica and probably will in Grand Turk. Went on the board for the Bahamas and the folks there seem to like it there and mentioned some things to do. I didn't ask this question over there because I assume if they are on the Bahamas message boards, they probably are biased. We are in our upper 40's and like to relax at a pool or a beach with some drinks or maybe snuba or snorkle. We do live in Florida and have some beautiful beaches here so we are used to really nice beaches. Opinions, please? I'm thinking if we do get off the ship we would book something on our own to avoid the costly excursions on the ship.

I am on the same cruise as you on the Breeze on Dec. 2nd. I have been to Nassau several times and really like get off the ship and walking around. We did go to the casino and gamble a bit last year but wouldn't do that again.

This time we are going to walk to Junkanoo Beach. It seems as though they have cleaned it up lately and has some good reviews.

We have a really good roll call going and have a meet and greet, a cocktail party and a slot pull planned. Stop on over and say hi on the roll call.

We enjoyed our stop at Nassau...took a taxi to Paradise Island and hung out on the beach near Atlantis.

I've never stayed on the ship while in port. But we cruise first for the itinerary so I wouldn't want to miss a port stop. We did stay near the ship at Freeport once, but mainly because it was raining - we would have done a beach day otherwise.

We got off the ship in Nassau once. Now if we're on a ship that stops there, we just stay on the ship.

If you just like to lounge around by the water with a drink, might as well do it on a nearly empty ship.

I don't know how good the snorkeling is there. Maybe that would make it worth getting off the ship for.

Hello TravelGal,

I would definitely stay on the Breeze, I have been to the Nassau many times and believe me, It is nicer here in Florida (I am from Florida also), There really isn't much to do (In my opinion), The only thing I do once in awhile is get off the ship for about an hour and go to Senor Frogs which is right there at the port. Then get back on the ship. But if I were on the Breeze I would definitely stay on. Have Fun.

Nassau may not be a top notch port to many, it's still a port worth while to get off the ship. You don't necessarily have to go on an excursion. You can take a water taxi round trip to Paradise Island and walk around Atlantis. Then walk around the town center area and visit señor frogs before getting back on the ship. A fun inexpensive adventure.

Personally, Carol & I probably will never book a cruise that goes to Jamaica again, we had a very bad experience there. However, others love it! We have been to Nassau four times and would probably still go to Atlantis or the like for a day at the beach. The last time we were there we did a land excursion that went to a fort. However, I have read that many veteran cruisers stay on board and "enjoy the quiet" while most are ashore.

We have also been to Cozumel four times, but we really loved the "Naci whatever" all inclusive last January! I can never remember names of places

We are in our 60's, are a bit slowed done by reset bones and battles with the "C" monster. So, perhaps we are a little more seditary than most.

Darn I need a cruise! :(

I personally wouldn't stay on the ship and have always enjoyed my time in Nassau. I like to visit every place the ship docks at least once and then form my own opinions as to whether or not I like it.

However, if all you plan on doing is sitting at a pool and are already use to nice beaches and such to where that is not a big deal for you, then I guess you can hang out at the ships pool and save a few bucks.

Have fun on whatever you decided to do...

We went to the Sheraton while there in August. We took a cab right from the port, paid $25pp for the use of pools and beach. It was beautiful there and I would do it again. We walked across the road to the daq shack before heading back to the port to enjoy a fresh fruit daquiri for $6 and then caught the #10 jitney back to the cruise port area.

Honestly, the Bahamas board would be the best place to get answers. Just have to post your question w/ exactly what you are looking to do.

We've been there a few times too, and the last time was the best!! Took a water taxi over to Paradise Island, hung out on the beach for a bit, then went back into town to the Pirate Musuem which was pretty cool. But the most amazing part,,,, probaly one of the best experiences we've had to date on a cruise,,,, was a Parade put on by all of the schools that happens every year, all of the kids, different ages, some w/ bands, dressed in amazing costumes!!! :D :D :D We just fell into it walking around, but I can tell you last year it was on 12/8.

Last time we were in Nassau we went to Blue Lagoon. Enjoyed it. They have a dolphin and I believe a sea lion encounter which we did not do, but later in the day I walked around and was pleasantly surprised that I could actually walk right up to them. Enjoyed the boat ride over almost as much as the beach! When we go in Feb. I am thinking of doing the British Colonial Hilton right off the ship. Anyone have anything good or bad to say about this? In years past I would always give myself a day on the ship alone while the others we cruised with went ashore and always enjoyed the peace of that too. It was nice to get something to eat and not wait on ANY lines! ;);)

We loved walking around Atlantis, and the beach there was lovely.

Isn't there a charge to use their beach? A few years ago we walked around Atlantis, saw part of the aquarium and the grounds but it was free then. In the meantime I've heard that about the only thing that is free is the casino, and we all know that isn't EXACTLY FREE!:eek:

OK if you don't want to spend a ton, then Atlantis is definitely out, but you might try the Sheraton - 25pp or the British Colonial Hilton 55pp (with 30 food/drink credit)

you should check out the bahamas board - scubagirl can direct you to something that should appeal - i know she can recommend snorkeling opperators, not sure about SNUBA...

Correct the entire property now has an access charge - a security guard will walk you to the casino and back, otherwise, be prepared to cough up major amounts of cash

I just came from there and did a great snorkeling trip through stuarts cove. I would do it again in a heartbeat!

Stuart Cove's is our plan in November. 3 stop snorkeling trip with a shark snorkel at the end. Their website is informative, but the recommendtions from other cruisers is what sold me. There are a few videos on youtube for the reef snorkel, ship/plane wreck snorkel and the shark snorkel. Don't know if this is your kind of thing, but plenty of people swear by the Stuart Cove operation.

I think the Bahamas is a great day! I definitely wouldn't stay on the ship.

My only issue with Nassau is that it seems impossible to skip it! Almost all carribbean cruises offer it as a stop. I want to try new places! Only for this reason is Nassau last on my favorite ports list.

When did this start? I was there in July and walked right inside to casino and lobby areas without issue.
