Noro On Equinox

Kathy,

Thank you so much for your excellent post! Did the casino stay open during this red alert? I would think that would be a germ spreader!

They had people all over the casino wiping every single machine down constantly. Once someone left a machine, someone came over and wiped it down. Once I sat at a machine for about an hour and the two machines next to me were wiped down at least 5 times. I was surprised that no one was doing the same in the computer center.l

I heard a very funny comment by the bartender in the Molecular Bar. I mentioned that I thought I saw a member of the entertainment staff wiping down the hand railings. He said "We love when that happens because those guys think they're superior to any of us, but when they're put on Noro duty, they learn real quick that we're all equal when it comes to sanitizing. But they sure do complain that they have to do it".

We just got off the Equinox on Friday. I won't reiterate what my co-passengers reported here as they did a good job of reporting. I'll just add my additional observations.

So far we are fine both during the cruise and now - no Norovirus symptoms yet.

Kathy

Kathy -- so glad to hear that you and Jack are OK -- thanks for the in-depth report. You two must be doing something right, since you were the only passengers we knew who didn't come down with that respiratory "creeping crud", on our Century cruise to Hawaii. We're cruising on Equinox in less than six weeks, so I'm keeping fingers crossed that the staff has the NORO outbreak contained, by now. So far, no reports of illness from those who boarded this week -- no news is good news!

Hi Liz

Any updates on how the ship is doing?

Thanks

Nothing yet, but I'd be surprised if I hear from them before they dock somewhere. I think they are in St Thomas tomorrow so that's a possibility, but I think the best chance is Thursday or Friday - her dog is getting shots on Thursday and I have to call and check on the little rascal to be sure she's okay afterwards. :-)

Liz

Wonderful posts, thanks everyone, we are on the March third cruise and are now well informed on what to do......A few extras, we are taking nail brushes to wash under and around the nails, they should be part of the cabin accessories. I watched passengers on the last cruise swipe there hands with the sanitisers but totally missed there nails ( old ex nurse). A clip lock bag could be used for the remote control. Also for anyone who is allergic to hand sanitizer could they be given disposable gloves as an option.....I would use them if it saved me from missing the wonderful holiday we have planned. There is 5 in my daughters stateroom, if one goes down do they all get quarantined?. We are coming from Australia and so looking forward to our trip. HAPPY SAILING :)

Once a nurse always a nurse, no such thing as "ex" I'm a Nurse as well. As another poster mentioned---many that wash their hands, just go through the motions and do it for a very short time, which is NOT doing much!! Ensure the water is hot and really lather and scrub your hands--sing Happy Bday to yourself, lol (20 + seconds) I rather put the effort at the sink, vice the toilet, lol and miss out on cruise activities. People really do require better education on hygiene!

What type of cabin? I would imagine an FV or large suite.

Were there flowers in vases in the MDR? On Connie last November, there were no bread baskets, or salt and pepper shakers and no flowers on the tables.

I am wondering if that was a cost cutting measure or because of the noro issue?

Thanks.

There were vases with flowers everywhere on Equinox until they went to Code Red,and after that everything was removed.

Whenever I was using the public bathrooms on Equinox there was an attendant there reminding everyone to wash their hands.

Two of my companions said the same thing but I must have used the public restrooms at least 3 times during those final few days and there was never an attendant in there, so it was very inconsistent.

No flowers on the MDR tables before or after Norovirus was reported. Celebrity has switched to fake (electronic?) candles on tables in MDR, at least on Equinox and Eclipse. That is good for us because we had to have them removed from our tables in the past due to allergies - those and the flowers Captain's Club gives us in our cabin. The CC flowers go to the first person who passes our cabin after we see the flowers in our cabin, or to the stateroom attendant to give to someone. The first person has never rejected our offer yet.

Yeah, Suzanne, we've been lucky. But we were probably exposed to Norovirus up to Friday, then we had the plane ride home with a guy with a mask on behind us and to our fitness center today. It's everywhere, so I don't know how long our luck with last or when we can consider ourselves home free from the ship's virus. Did we have flowers on our MDR tables on the Century last April? Hope to cruise again with you someday.

Kathy -- I think we did have flowers in the Century MDR, even on our 2-top table. I like the idea of them using the electronic candles, as the real ones are a fire hazard on any ship. Other than the obvious inconvenience of finding yourselves on a "bleach cruise", how did you enjoy Equinox and the Southern Caribbean itinerary?

There are 3 ways:

1. The no-brainer way: Use of one's seapass card.

2. The low-tech and easy way: The room stewart, assistants and other staff members know who are quarantined and are obligated to report them. If you have crusied before, you know how likely it is that you will run into your room stewart or assistants when you exit/enter your cabin. Or if you are quarantined, and they enter to makeup your room and you are not there!

3. The high tech way: Face recognition programs (they take your picture when you board the ship). I do NOT know whether Celebrity, the low-tech leader, has this advanced program yet. Nevertheless it is already widely used in all major airports, amusement parks (annual pass processing), etc, etc. What was once fiction in a Jason Bourne movie is now a reality.

I should have thought about the seapass card! Though dh and I mix up our hotel key cards all the time and may use each others'. Thus, if one were confined and the other well, that might be problematic.

Facial recognition on a cruise ship and amusement parks--that is a bit amazing!

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Another poster also mentioned that the medical center staff will call you several times a day to "see how you are doing". It's not good if nobody's there to pick up the phone!

Yes, if you buy an annual pass from an amusement park like Seaworld, they'll take your picture (which is imbedded in your card and you can't see it, just like the seapass card). When you re-enter the park throughout the year, they don't really look at the "picture" but rather use a face recognition program to check that it's indeed you and not somebody else using the card.

I have never used those blowers; and, now I know why. Years ago, I read an article that stated that paper towels were much more efficacious than the blowers. The article further stated that the popularity of the blowers was due to the fact that over time they were much less expensive than the replacement of paper towels.

According to Snopes, the jury's still out. But the bigger problem is that people don't wash their hands long enough. I know I'm guilty of this.

Yes, with this kind of thread, no news is good news! If it's really bad, there will probably be several live threads by now.

I'm certainly agreeing -- with fingers crossed, since we are due to board her in about five weeks! ;) However, I am keeping in mind that these are longer cruises (10-11 nights) -- so, this nasty critter still has plenty of time to rear its ugly head on this sailing  -- but I sure hope not!
