Celebrity smoking policy "yeay"

I used to be a smoker. Yes it stinks. But Im not going to let it ruin a vacation. Im sure not going to be the person to "Tattle" on someone either. How old are you anyway? Are we still in elementary school?

I am an asthmatic (adult onset) and an ex-smoker (33 years) and so is my husband (12 years). I try to not let the smoke bother me since I love going to Las Vegas (smoking in the casinos) and love cruising. I stopped smoking many years prior to finding out I had asthma.

 

We've been on Celebrity twice (booked for a third in Jan), RCI twice, Princess once, and Carnival twice. I don't remember the smoking on RCI and Princess so I must not have been bothered by it. However, I can tell the difference between Celebrity and Carnival. I love the casino - but it was too smoky to stay in the Casino very long on Carnival.

 

As far as 'tattling' goes - If I'm booked on a cruiseline that forbids smoking on the balcony and I have an asthma attack due to the smoke, then I have no problem telling Security! Why should my health be an issue when someone is breaking the rules causing me to have a possible life threatening asthma attack? I can't complain on Carnival since they permit smoking on the balcony - but Celebrity does not! It is one of the many reasons I love to cruise on Celebrity.

 

In addition, I'm especially bothered physically by cigar smoke. There too, if someone is smoking a cigar on the balcony, I will report it. Why should my cruise be ruined by someone's breaking the rules? I paid good money for that balcony and will not allow someone's rule break and lack of courtesy ruin my vacation and my health.!

 

If my balcony neighbor continues to smoke on the balcony despite repeated warnings from Security, I will be forced to send them my bill for the cruise as well as any of the doctor bills following my asthma attacks!!! :eek:

The peeing in the pool analogy is actually a perfect one. Some of us are seriously bothered by smoke. It is a medical thing. In my case, I will cross a street while walking to avoid a smoker on their own lawn, or if I get stuck behind a smoker while walking. I live for the day when my employer finally prohibits smoking on the property as so many have done.

 

So, yes, I will continue to call guest relations, housekeeping and security when I encounter a smoker lighting up where they shouldn't. I can't wait until Celebrity gets rid of the smoking areas by the pool and the mast bar, and restricts it to the top, aft on one side and the 5th floor port spot, or maybe even gets rid of smoking altogether.

 

It isn't 'tattling', it is protecting my health. The smoking rules are printed in black and white, and people who don't follow them should pay the price. If you want to smoke, sail HAL or some ship that welcomes it, not X.

Celebrity has told me that it identifies outdoor smoking areas in the daily newsletter but the locations vary from cruise to cruise. My question for people who have cruised Celebrity Millennium Class ships in 2013 is which outdoor areas have been designated for smoking on their cruises?

 

My experience has been:

Deck 11 - One small area portside - forward - next to Mast Bar

Deck 10 - Ocean Bar - portside

Deck 10 - Pool area - portside - midship

Deck 10 - Bar area just outside Aqua Spa Cafe - portside

Deck 4 - Just outside MDR - portside

Deck 4 - Outside Casino and theater - portside

I'd think that the folks who sign up for a Celebrity cruise, knowing full well their relatively restrictive policies, then try to "sneak a smoke" against the rules are the ones who need to grow up. Aren't you a bit old to be "smoking in the boys' room?"

If you don't understand the peeing in the pool analogy -- how about this? When we took our first cruise in 1986 on Royal Caribbean there were smoking and non-smoking tables in the MDR. We were at a non-smoking table with a smoking table right next to it. The woman directly behind me liked to keep her cigarette over her shoulder -- just about 18 inches from my nose. But hey -- what am I complaining about? No one was smoking at our table :rolleyes:

We just got off the Reflection and were right above the deck 5 smoking section.....never had a problem -and we spent a lot of time on the balcony!

 

Where we had the problem was deck 14 where you had to walk through the smoking section to get to the pool!

Was it windy up on Deck 14?

So, if you purchase a balcony and cannot use it? If you want to call it

tatteling be my guest. I call it, making guest relations/security aware of the problem.

If you want to speak with the neighbor first and see if they will stop? Go for it...but

if that doesn't work? Guest Relations/Security are the ones who need to handle the

issue.

 

As for not cruising because some folks smoke? Now that is a silly

comment.:eek:

I think it is completely unreasonable for anyone to complain about smokers smoking in the smoking area. What the heck? Who would think that is ok?

Azamara smoking area is brill even though there is only one it really does not matter on a tiny ship.

 

It really can become the 'in' place with lots of laughter and chat;)

Celebrity does that itinerary because they are forced to by US law, nothing they can do about it.

 

In 2015 Celebrity has scheduled a Hawaii to Vancouver cruise. This is an option to get away from the Ensenada hassel. It follows the Tahatian Treasures cruise on April 3 , 2015 on the Solstice and is also a repositioning cruise.

I have seen smokers take an ashtray to the non-smoking side where there was more room, so it does go both ways. Smokers aren't always the innocent victims they perceive themselves to be.

 

Neither should be sitting where they shouldn't, and neither should be complaining if they do.

If that situation occurs, (rather brazen of them if you ask me) they should be immediately removed from the non-smoking side. Thankfully, I have never seen someone do that. Smokers need to be respectful as well.

No "next battle" IMO. If I elect to sit in a smoking section I must expect smoking. On the other hand, if I am in a non-smoking area, including balconies, I will expect NO smoking.

We were very happy with the non smoking policy on the Solstice, although there is some irony that the walking track passes through the smoking area of the Masthead Grill.

 

The only problem we had involved smokers at the Sunset Bar who leant over the railings so that the smoke drifted down on to the Oceanview Bar below. On one occasion ash landed in my husbands meal.

 

We' re sailing on Equinox next year and it appears that smoking is allowed on the port side of the Sky Lounge. I don't see how you can have smoking and non smoking areas in the same room.

Where did you see that? There has been no smoking indoors for quite a while now. I can't see Celebrity changing to allow indoor smoking now.

We are going X for our next cruise because of their policies restricting smoking in particular. We have previously cruised with HAL and NCL, both enjoyable however, smoking on adjacent balconies has spoiled our enjoyment. We will never book a balcony again with a cruise line that permits smoking on balconies. We have heard great things about X, so really looking forward to the experience.

I agree some smoking areas are a bit too close to major doorway, but I have never come accross one where there isn't an alternate route.

I think if a non-smoker is in the smoking area they get what they get and the smoker should feel free to smoke as much as they'd like. If a non-smoker is sitting there perhaps they don't mind the smoke.

 

I don't buy into the philosophy some have that you can only drink coffee in the coffee area, smoke in the smoking area, swim if by the pool, eat if in buffet, etc. etc. I think all public areas on the ship are public.

 

If the buffet is busy then it is nice to let people have tables if you are not eating...

 

But you can stand and smoke easily enough and wait for a seat. I'm guessing this question is kind of hypothetically because most non-smokers don't want to be anywhere near the smoking area, much less sit there. There are way more non-smoking areas to occupy.

The only bad place on celebrity ships for the smoke is on the port side of the pool areas and the port side in the very rear of the buffet dining. If you see someone smoking or smell smoke from a balcony just get the location and report it to guest relations I guarantee they will stop it or throw the offenders off the ship. You may have to complain more than once but it will stop.

E. Say: you do realize that this is the smoking section? Just wanted to make sure because I'm going to light my cigarette and I don't want you to think that I'm smoking in a non-smoking area.

 

If you are in a smoking area, you should not have to ask to have a cigarette and this is coming from a non-smoker.
