Remember our first sticker shock when satying at the Hamilton Princess and ordered two burgers and beers at the pool and the bill was 58 dollars:eek:

LOL - so true! We always budget more for food than we do for the place we stay. It's a cottage, so we have a kitchen for breakfast and most lunches. We go to the grocery store for a few things and it can be over $100 for 1 bag and a six pack of beer!

Is this huge shrimp on the Burrito Bar? And isn't Jumbo Shrimp an oxymoron? :D

LOL, actually it was a huge burritto.... and you are correct that is an oxymoron. Don't go getting me started on my George Carlin, Steven Wright oxymoron jokes now.....

lst time I went to Bermuda I was in college and stayed at the Elbow Beach Surf Club. It was not as fancy as it is now, but still very nice. I believe that, Castle Harbor and Princess were the 3 GO TO places...if memory serves! :o This was before AI'es and dinner was included, but breakfast, lunch, snacks, drinks, even soda, you had to pay for. My parents paid for the trip, but everything extra I had to pay for. Breakfasts and lunches costed a fortune. Went 2 years later to EB and this time we brought powdered milk and Carnation Instant Breakfast. Ate either breakfast, lunch or a snack and used the Carnation Instant Breakfast as a filler. I look back in awe at that, but I was on a tight budget...

Good idea on the Carnation Instant Breakfast.

Princess is still there - both Hamilton and the new one out in Southhampton. They are trying to get people to call it the Fairmont - that's who owns it now - but no one does. Castle Harbor is gone - private partial ownership place - sort of like a timeshare, but not. Elbow Beach is undergoing a big renovation. It's not far from where we stay - which is a cottage off the beaten path, but right on the beach. It's heaven - expensive, but heaven.

I always bring coffee, tea and sugar - sometimes other things as well. I hate to buy a big thing of coffee or sugar only to leave it there.

I played tennis at Castle Harbor. I was a very good player back in the day and met a man who worked at CH as a tennis instructor and was able to play some games with him! :D I have a friend who we always used to cruise with and she is absolutely OBSESSED with Bermuda. We cruised down there 4 or 5 times with them. Now they also rent a villa. Not sure what parrish it's in. Funny, the last time we went there on the Empress OS with them the Captain came on the speaker right before muster drill as we were sailing out and said that because of high winds and bad weather we MIGHT not be able to get to Bermuda. She went absolutely bonkers. Actually wanted OFF the ship!:rolleyes: Luckily we made it there. I swear there was going to be a mutiny if the Capt. didn't get us to Bermuda. She cries and cries and cries when we leave...wants to be buried there. A little bit of a nut! LOVE George Carlin...not a fan of every other word being 4 letter, but what a great comedian.

Apologies to those not taking the Splendor to Bermuda (Sadly, she doesn't go there, but other ships do!).

I can understand your friend's obsession :) I would be making a fuss if I were told that's not where I was going - when that's exactly where I want to be. I'd join her in the mutiny.

If Carnival did a Bermuda run out of Boston or NY - I'd do another cruise there. On our last one I woke up early enough to see the island come up on the horizon and then the dawn - it was awesome!

I watched the web cam with Splendor being there, and than when she was leaving, WOW it felt like you were right on the ship! gave a close up and personal view! I love Bermuda, but like the casino in the night time, and staying 3 days puts that out of commision. LOL...

double shrimp burrito for me!

We happened to be on the Splendor for a two night TA event when they brought her to Long Beach (free which was a really good thing:D). The first afternoon I did two Burrittos (much to the dismay of my wife), and I paid for it in spades (in more ways than one) later that evening. BUT....they were really good!

I know - I don't know why they don't do that! What other forum or are you not allowed to mention except in code :D

Carnival's funville forum has a private message feature. Am I in trouble for mentioning them?

Yea, that's the deal breaker for me. We spend most of our night time at the casino/casino bar. If they could keep it open while in port, we might change our mind about cruising there again. Also, I believe Splendor sailed there in April and that's not a good time to vacation there. Our DIL'es parents sailed to Bermuda the end of April of last year on RCI and they said it was cold and rainy and just awful the whole time. :( A lot of people don't realize that Bermuda is NOT a "tropical Caribbean island."

I don't know why they don't allow the ships to open the casinos after say - 11:30 or so. Their bars close rather early, so it wouldn't be much competition. I know the hotels complain, but they aren't getting that $$$ anyway!

I liked having 3 days in once place - especially if it was Bermuda. I'd stay at HMC for 3 days - even with the tendering in! :)

This is so true - I remind people all the time that it's in the middle of nowhere - but off the coast of the Carolinas. It's a 90 minute flight from EWR. You take off - they sell you a drink and you land :)

From about Oct through end of May - you're taking a chance on the weather. If you golf or play tennis, it could be great! I've always wanted to go in April when they do the House and Garden tours!

Question for those of you that have sailed from NYC in the winter months.

I've only cruised out of NYC once that was this past March, we left late and it was snowing. I didn't really pay much attention to how long it took from the time we left port to the time we went by Lady Liberty. I'm hoping that if we leave port on time that I am able to get some good pics of the Statue of Liberty and hoping there will still be a bit of daylight by the time we pass her. Can anyone here tell me if that is wishful thinking on my part...?

If you are talking about late Nov - early Feb. It's dark around here by about 5pm. If you leave on time at 4pm and it's a nice day - you might catch a sunset behind the Statue, but the SoL itself will be on the wrong side of that sun. It is lit up at night, but I'm not sure what time they put those lights on. It looks pretty cool with the lights on. If you have a good camera, you might get some good shots.

IIRC it takes about 45 minutes to get to within sight of the Statue.

I've heard that on some ships you need a S&S card in a slot by the door to keep the lights on. Do they have this on the Splendor? Do I need to bring an old card so we don't have to use our S&S cards?

No, they do not use this system on the Splendor... at least not in the inside cabin we stayed in.

Magic is the first ship where you had to do this (and Breeze after her).
