Kesstral Posted May 6, 2013 #1 Share Posted May 6, 2013 Sailing away from vancouver now and the foghorn just stopped after 3 minutes or so... maybe longer. Captain just explained their whistle got stuck. Really feel for the crewmember t that i just saw climbing down from unsticking it. We might have a new record though! sail7seas Posted May 6, 2013 #5 Share Posted May 6, 2013 Interesting. :) I think this is the first I've heard a report of the fog horn sticking. Hope someone had a can of 3-1 oil. :D Good it's fixed.
Rare Copper10-8 Posted May 6, 2013 #6 Share Posted May 6, 2013 HAL ships have two whistles/fog horns. One is located in the radar/main mast above the Crows Nest (white megaphone shape with black center under larger of the two radars) and the other one is located in the forward part of the funnel (white rectangular box on left with black center) . The Bridge can switch between the two and/or combine them. Under normal circumstances, the aft one is used since the fwd one is located above/in the vicinity of sleeping quarters. Sounds like perhaps an air flow issues with Zaandam yesterday

sail7seas Posted May 6, 2013 #8 Share Posted May 6, 2013 Copper, You have such depth of knowledge about the ships and their parts and pieces and are very generous to educate us. It's so interesting. Did you learn all this through the years because of your interest in ships or was much of it cram study in training when you became an Officer on board? Kesstral Posted May 6, 2013 Author #10 Share Posted May 6, 2013 It was the one above the Crow's Nest. There were lots of people scrambling down from the sky deck after a few minutes. We could hear the captain blowing the rear horn too. Cruise has started off fantastic and the crew has been great. Ship is a bit rocky sailing between the north end of Vancouver Island and Haida Gwaii.
