Balcony smoking concerns?

I have seen some posts about people not being able to use balconies due to their neighbors smoking constantly on them because of RCIs smoking policy. I am looking at upgrading to balcony cabins on a future cruise as the price is the same as our ocean view room- should I be concerned about the smoking issue? It would be nice to sit out on a balcony, but not if I have to inhale my neighbors smoke the whole trip!

 

If we do get balconies and have smoke issues, is there anything RCI can do or do we just have to suck it up? (Pun intended...)

Not sure when you are thinking of cruising, but as of Jan 1, 2014, there is no smoking permitted on all balconies. This will not be a concern for you unless you are going in the next 6 weeks or so; until then, no there is nothing a guest can do since smoking is permitted on outside balconies until the new policy comes into effect.

You will be pleased to know that Royal Caribbean has changed their Smoking Policy effective January 1, 2014. going by your signature you cruise in 23 days so if you're talking about that cruise you can enjoy your balcony and hope you dont get a chain smoker, nothing RCI can do if there is a smoker as a neighbour

How obnoxious. :eek: I hope if you get caught Royal Caribbean enforces their policies.

 

"Smoking is not permitted inside any stateroom and any stateroom balcony. This applies to all stateroom categories onboard. If a guest is in violation of this stateroom policy, a cleaning fee of $250 USD will be applied to their SeaPass® account and may be subject to further action pursuant to the "Consequences Section" of the Guest Conduct Policy."

Inconsiderate and selfish smokers like you are one of the reasons RCI is changing the policy thus ruining things for the considerate smokers. You do what you want when you want - the heck with anyone else - which leads to complaints from non-smokers.

I would think that after Jan. 1, anyone who finds a neighbor smoking on their balcony would report that immediately. I certainly would.

It's funny how these smoking threads always end up going in the same direction........lol.

I highly doubt that they are going to escort anyone off the ship for a 1st violation. Maybe if you are caught constantly smoking on your balcony they might give you the boot. Probably 1st a warning, 2nd a $250 cleaning fee and then maybe the boot on the 3rd time.

A friend was on a cruise shortly after the cabin ban was put into place. The cabin steward warned her about 4 times and finally told her to keep the ashtray on the balcony. She was never fined. I DO NOT approve of her actions, but I really don't expect the cruise line to enforce the new policy anymore than their other of their unenforced policies..

I think it might have something to do with who catches you breaking the rules. If caught by a cabin steward then your right they will probably cut you some slack as they rely on you for their tips and a good rating. If someone complains to guest services I can see them coming down harder on the offender.

So let me get this straight, a rule is in place, but they won't enforce it, so go ahead and break the rule. Yeah... that pretty much explains the "it's about me" mentality of America.

Do to a health issue I have with smoke regardless if it's cigarette, leaf burning, environment issues, etc. my throat closes up and I cannot swallow, I have to go on pills, injections and inhalers so I have no problem telling the cruise line the area I have a problem with which I have done many times and after that there was no smoke smell in the walkways again. It's not a dislike just a health issue. Furthermore, my two brothers died of lung cancer due to smoking. Therefore I'm very vocal about this issue. I do not want to end up like them, I prefer to small and enjoy the flowers, etc. not looking up at them.

According to the Royal Caribbean website, the policy is in effect as of January 1, 2014.
