On board credit - odd issue

Recommended Posts

Odd thing happened on the Majesty in November. Never happened to me before so I'm wondering if any of you had seen this before. We always use cash on our cruises and on the last night we had a couple of hundred dollars left over. We had a few hundred dollars of on board credit when we first stepped on the ship - some was on board credit from cash we put on and some was credit from booking while we were on another ship and from price drops. So anyway, on the last night I went down to cash out the remaining amount of money and I was told I couldn't have it that I'd have to spend it or lose it. Wish I could have seen the look on my face, it must have been priceless. I told him he better find someone that can give me my money back. He did and I got my money but has anyone seen this before? I've never heard tell of losing your on board credit if you don't spend it.

The OBC you get from Royal is non-refundable. That would be the amount you got from booking on board the other ship. However, they are supposed to use that first, and if you were on Majesty, then that amount should have only been $25. So I am also confused like you, as the only funds left should have been the cash you put on yourself, and that is fully refundable.

We had this happen too. We had more on board credit that us used. On the last night went to ask what happens to it (credit my CC). When they checked they said I could not get a credit and had to spend it. It was all OBC from travel agent and future cruise.

The solution: Went to the casino and took cash on my sea pass (have to pay 3% fee) but better than losing it all. Final bill was $3.20.

Great Idea! Seems the way Royal works is, if you have OBC you should make sure that's gone before putting anything additional on your account. We usually prepay tips, but waiting to pay tips until you board might help use up the OBC.

I had almost the exact same situation happen to me about a month ago. I think they are just used to so many people trying to cash out of the non-refundable OBC's. Although I used a credit card for onboard charges, I added cash to my account during the beginning par of my cruise. Realizing that I was going to have a couple hundred dollars left in the end, I went to guest services the day before the last day to cash out of some of my cash and just leave the OBC for the final tips. They tried to tell me that I couldn't get my cash back, so I reminded them that the cash was originally mine and they can use my OBC's for the spending that has already taken place & tips. Once they printed out my statement and could see that I made a cash deposit, they apologized for their mistake and immediately gave me the cash I requested (no fee for getting my cash back from guest services).

I'm not sure if their initial screen on their computers show an itemized statement. I've learned just to ask them to print me out an itemized statement and then they can see a true breakdown of what cash has been deposited, what OBC's are available, and the list of everything that has been used. I think some of the TA OBC's are refundable, but I also think that most of RCCL's OBC's are non-refundable (I mainly use mine for the automatic tips).

Guest Services can immediately tell you what OBC is refundable and which is not because it is coded on your account which can only be seen on their screen.

The only OBC that is not refundable is that which is generated from RCI (booking on board or during a WOW sale). Any OBC that is not generated by RCI is totally refundable. This would include OBC from a TA, a gift from family/friends, money you've added and redeeming Visa Points.
