Can we cash in foreign currency

We are sailing out of Bayonne on the Summit this spring. Can we cash in or exchange Euros and Kroners? If so, do they have a surcharge? And where? Like the casino?

Are you wanting to change Euro to USD? Yes, the Guest Relations desk will do this, and the exchange rates will be posted there. kroner might be more difficult, depending on your itinerary

I'm thinking no because the ship doesn't stop at ports requiring that currency.

They will not exchange your currency unless you are going to be going to Europe. The cruise line has a deal with a large bank where they get foreign currency, but only when they are going to those countries. And the currencies they exchange are very limited. Since we do a lot of International travel we often find ourselves with extra foreign currencies and simply store it in separate ziplock bags for the next time we are going to be in that part of the world. It is possible to exchange Euros in some larger US cities, but you are not going to get a favorable exchange rate. As to Kroners.....I think you are out of luck until you return to Europe.

I believe any exchange is also limited to paper currency.

I know that in the Caribbean on Eclipse last week there were many European guests who were settling their accounts in Euros and the relevant exchange rate was posted at Guest Relations. Since they were accepting Euros to pay SeaPass accounts, I would be surprised if they wouldn't exchange them for USD.

They will only buy back currency they have sold. They will not sell currency for a country they are not visiting. If you have Euros and want to clear your bill they should accept them. ~ Rick

So apparently the OP can use the Euros to settle his bill but can't exchange the, for dollars, is that right?

Cruise ships are not clearing houses for passengers who have left over foreign currencies from previous trips. When I've wanted to change currencies back to USD, I had to show the receipt from the original transaction to prove that I had exchanged the currency on the ship. It's totally different when non-US passengers are settling a bill or needing US dollars during a cruise, but when it appears that someone just wants to get rid of unused currency, I don't think it will happen.

Wow...this is the first profit opportunity I've seen suggested that Celebrity turns down. I don't believe it.

 

They make at least 5% profit on exchanging money...that's 5% when you buy it and another 5% when you sell it back to them. It's a profit center even though they tell you they are charging what Bank America charges it's customers. Don't believe for a minute that Celebrity actually pays those rates to Bank America.

You can always give it as an extra tip to the people who take care of you, on top of your auto-gratuties. I'm sure those folks won't mind that it is a foreign currency.

 

Otherwise, save it for your next trip, or give it to a friend heading overseas.
