Last 20 or so have been with Carnival and while we have alway had a great time entertainment has gotten pitiful.

Doing our first princess next month and looking at going back to RCCL after that.

We may be done with Carnival until they recognize and improve their entertainment.

What's wrong with carnivals entertainment??

I just finished my fifth cruise with Carnival. As can be seen in my signature, I've also cruised HAL numerous times, and RCL and Princess once each. I like Carnival because it is fun and has a casual atmosphere. Yet, I can dress up in the evenings and not feel out of place. I love HAL, but not many of its passengers. We don't care for the shows on any of the ships, but we do love karaoke, dancing, and drinking. Carnival works for us.

What is HAL?

Nothing as far I see. I went on my first Princess cruise a year ago expecting better entertainment and food. Same as Carnival at almost double the price. In fact. I think the entertainment on most CCL ships was better than on Sapphire Princess. No desire to do that again. Spend more money for the same thing.

Its gone steadily downhill in past 10 years. A few examples

We were on the Conquest two weeks ago. And a few examples.

Two evenings the only entertainment in main lounge was Hasbro. If we were about 8 and wanted a game where you had to jump up and down like a moron to get onto the stage and than play a game with no skill required would be fine. But to have this for a ship full of adults? Seriously?

They used to have really good production shows. They have switched to production plus shows which have 8 mediocre singers and flashing lights designed to be migraine triggers.

They used to have really good rock cover band playing most nights in a lounge so you could listen to music and dance. Now when they have them they put them in a crowded corridor next to casino where it is too noisy to really hear, lots of cigarette smoke and no room to dance.

We still cruise Carnival with other lines now mostly for the friends we have made and enjoy sailing with.

Why do they do that? I still like the rock bands Carnival hires but would prefer to hear them in a lounge where there's more room to sit down and/or dance and away from the casino and those #>%#?#!!! smokers.

Asked JH about 6 months ago and he said he was surprised but would find out as it seemed strange to him also. Never did hear back.

Two week ago on the Conquest same thing and asked the CD during a Q and A.

Said there was no lounge for them. Asked them why not the lounge opposite piano bar. Answer, That is now a smoking lounge.

OK why not on the lounge in deck 4? Answer That is now used at nights for salsa music and latins will stay up very late to listen to music.

What would be your favourite class of ship? I haven't been on the Spirit class ships, especially the Pride the decor and that it is getting. 2.0 upgrade.

Spirit Class. We love the Pride. Can't wait to sail in March with the 2.0 upgrades, although we are just as excited to sail on her in October. We sail with Carnival because of price, the wonderful staff, comedy shows, WCMC and Bitter & Blanc (lol), and port close to home. We have sailed on RCI and although we had a great time; in all honesty we missed Carnival. :D

This October will be my 32nd cruise with CCL and they offer the best bang for your buck IMO, since I am Diamond that is a bigger incentive to cruise with CCL but the only perks I like is the early embarkation and the unlimited laundry service the other stuff I don't care about. This October my cruise rate is $899.00 (including taxes)for a single on deck 7 mid-ship. The whole cruise including air fare was about $1127.00. Where could you go for that price including food and lodging. I also have a $249.00 OBC. I've never had a bad cruise with CCL granted some have been better than others.

  • 4 weeks later...

Out of a total of 124 unique members that responded to this thread, 118 of them have provided insight of why they choose to sail Carnival.

Out of those 118 members, 83 (or 70.3%) referenced price or overall cost. Many of those members had stated price is their determining factor when selecting a cruise, with others placing it in their top three. A few had made the statement that Carnival is the cheapest cruise line.

My question to those 83 members or whoever would like to respond:

If Carnival was more expensive than a competitor currently offering a comparable or higher quality itinerary with or without more onboard amenities, would you sail with the competitor?

One simple reason: Norfolk.

They're the only line currently sailing from my beloved hometown.

That said, my wife and I have (between us) sailed Carnival, Holland America, Princess, Celebrity, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian. Never had a bad cruise, loved 'em all. But Carnival has been our favorite. And to give Carnival credit for those who would say they're just party boats, we're both quiet introverted types. Carnival successfully caters to us just as well as the folks who are the life of the party at the hairy chest contest.

I will give it a go, yes I would sail another line if Carnival was more expensive, as long as the " without more onboard amenities" are not the bottom basement routine, and as long as the ship didn't exclude me from enjoying things other passengers could do.

Currently the MSC Divina has prices better than Carnival on many sailings, but soon they are planning to have these "experience" packages which will dictate and make mandatory certain items. If you go with the cheapest package, Bella, it dictates that you can only pick from certain cabins, not the best locations, and everyone else gets to pick their dining option, (they do not have anytime dining) first. Kids are excluded from some of the kids activities, etc...

Its rare I can find a better price than CCL, especially since we have to plan our cruise well in advance and have no flexibility with the week we sail. At some point we might be afforded that and living in Florida will help. But not currently. ES is almost always better for us at this point.

I sure would. IF it was one of the competitors that I've been wanting to try like Norwegian it RCI.

For example, we've been to Bermuda once on a land vacation. Would love to go back their on a cruise. But Carnival only offers limited sailings. None in the Summer when we vacation. Been eyeing RCI out of Bayonne as that port is less than an hour from my house. But at $170 per person per day starting price for a 5 day, well that completely leaves us out. And I don't really want my first royal ship to be on one of their oldest ones in the fleet, so GOS out of Baltimore doesn't really appeal to me. I would rather go with NCL out of NY, which we might do next. Still for the time we need to go next Summer, nobody could match Carnival's combination of price and itineraries so with them we go again!

I keep coming back because I have FUN on the FUN SHIPS :). As you can see we have only done one HAL cruise and it was nice but I was missing Carnival. You can't beat the value. Yes there has been cuts but with this economy I'm sure the other cruise lines have cut too - or are charging for it. I don't plan on using any of the zip line etc on RCI so why pay for it? I do want to try Princess though. I really wish that Carnival would extend some of their loyalty program to other lines so we would be encouraged to try their lines instead of the competition. The main thing I love is the laundry and getting on the ship faster :).

Carnival will always be the value proposition. Sure, there may be a time or two when there is a competitor that is offering a discounted cabin that is cheaper, put that is their niche. Quality product and good price.

Value is probably the biggest factor for us. And I have no desire to ice skate or rock climb... just give me a DOD on the Lido.

I think that is the real reason, "value". You don't pay as much as on the other lines, but you get pretty much all the things you want to do at a fair price. It is also comfortable. We have been to most places you can sail to from Florida so most of the time we don't even get off the ship, except to snorkel or grab a cheaper drink. The food is usually good, the staff is good, the ships is clean, over all about all you could ask for.

I look for bargains since I'm flexible. Done 111 days at sea with Carnival, since they seem to offer frequent bargains. Done about that many days with the competition too. IMO Carnival is cutting entertainment cost (shows) and the activities are pathetic (hairy chest, bean bag, trivia) but that's me. Lots to do at night and I have no trouble finding something to do during sea days on my own. Sun, pool, hot tub or just reading or working on a manuscript. I still think Carnival offers a good value for the money.
