they called me 2 weeks before the cruise. I have an aft balcony and they wanted $500 for OS or $800 for grand suite, we declined. But why not call them, You don't get what you won't ask for- all they can say is no.....

I would say " received email about an offer" have your booking #

I think you have a better chance for an upsell to a suite if you are in the highest balcony category. For example they know the aft is a coveted location and they can resell those cabins much easier than a suite. As with anything it will depend on how well the cruise is selling and what they have left for inventory.

We made a call earlier today about upgrading options on our cruise next week. They were at the stage of offering upgrades and did give us the option to upgrade to OV instead of our inside for no charge. But they saw we had a really great on board credit offer we got as a special promotion. They couldn't do the change and keep the OBC in place. They recommended we keep our lido deck rooms and keep the OBC's. We agreed. Maybe next time!

Don't know what the criteria is but as Diamonds with 37 cruises and 262 days we have never had an upgrade or even an upsell. I think most people never receive one. Good luck!

We have been on two and are booked for a third carnival cruise. We have received an upsell call for all three.

First was an OV guarantee to a balcony. I don't remember what they were asking, we declined.

Second we were booked for a verandah inside. I missed the call and it didn't occur to me to find the number to call back.

Today we received an offer to upgrade from a Lido inside to a Lido balcony. I had to speak to my husband in order to take it and when I called back 5 minutes later the 2 available balconies were gone. We were offered a spa balcony for more $$ but declined. I called back and asked if there we're any other offers he could make and he said that they generally only make offers on the same or higher deck, and they like to stay in the same area, but that if I was interested he had a balcony one deck down or and aft balcony two decks down. We took the aft balcony on the Verandah Deck, and are very, very happy!

We got called 3 times on our last cruise about a week before sailing. We were in a ocean view for 4 and they offered us a balcony for $600.00 more. No way ... we declined. If they wanted our ocean view cabin so bad, they should have made a better offer to us.

We had an interesting experience with the Upsell Fairy in 2011. We had booked a Grand Suite with an extended balcony on the Carnival Ecstasy.

We got a call offering us an upsell to the Penthouse Suite (also called the Owner's Suite) when the Ecstasy still sailed out of Galveston, TX.

There are only two of these gigantic suites on the ship. We had been on the Ecstasy before and never realized they were there even though you can see the windows when you are at the pool. The cabin measures 916 sq ft and the balcony 110 sq ft.

Since it was our anniversary, I said yes. :D

My wife took pictures and posted them on her personal website. You can see them at the link below.

It was a great experience!!!!!!

We have had 1 call, it was from an 8M to the Penthouse Suite on Destiny, for only $1200 more. We said no thanks. I generally think that they offer the higher selling categories the upsells so they can have more of the lower rate rooms for new cruisers.

For those who have called, when is the best time? One or two weeks before cruising? And do you call the general reservations number or your PVP? I'm not very enthralled with our PVP. It's no different than booking online.

Also, if booked with a casino rate, does anyone know if there a different number to call about upgrading rooms?

Thanks everyone I am going to call this weekend!!!

Why would you call for an upgrade this far out? The upsell calls typically come about a week before sail date, when they're trying to fill the ship.Carnival has about 8 months to get people to pay full price for the upgrade you're after. You may want to wait til November...just a thought.

We have gotten one upsell call in 17 cruises - on Fantasy, offering us the OS for $1,800 more for a 5 day cruise. (from Grand Suite) Said no way.

Then, one week before my Conquest cruise on 2/16/14 I saw there were still a good number (at least 6) GS's available. I called Carnival, asking for an upsell/upgrade. They said no. The suites disappeared the next day. (I had one of the desirable L-shaped aft balcony cabins.) While on the cruise I happened to bump into someone, and as we chatted he mentioned that they had been upgraded (not even an upsell) from an inside to a GS for free- the day after I called CCL! And it was their first CCL cruise! So I guess there really is no criteria for offering an upgrade or upsell.

I agree that there does not seem to be a certain criteria for upgrades and/or upsells. Never received either one of these.

Taking my first Carnival cruise on 4/2/14, Splendor out of NY. I received an upgrade call a few weeks ok to move from balcony on deck 6 to deck 9 for $40 and took it. Then last night I got another upgrade to go from standard balcony on deck 9 to a spa suite on deck 10 for $400, took that too, so overall from my original room to now only cost me an extra $440, where as booking it to begin with would have been over $1000, yup, I'll take it.
