glm7777 Posted March 26, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 26, 2014 What is the benefit of completing the online check-in? We are sailing the Dawn in May and have no idea how the embarkation process goes. Will we avoid any lines if we do the online check-in?
Da-Painter Posted March 26, 2014 #2 Share Posted March 26, 2014 You check in now on-line, just like your air-flight. You need to print out your cruise docs, and bring them with you for entrance into the cruise terminal. You can print out luggage tags, if needed. Its easy to do, thats all. :)
orangegrove Posted March 26, 2014 #3 Share Posted March 26, 2014 You kind of have to complete the online check in. You need your paperwork to enter the terminal. It's like your boarding pass for the ship. They check your paperwork and your ID prior to going through security.

We are sailing the Dawn in May and have no idea how the embarkation process goes. Will we avoid any lines if we do the online check-in? During Online check in you do things like enter your identification document numbers/type, enter emergency contacts, and verify your information. This will greatly speed up your embarkation. It takes almost no time, so just hop on to the NCL site and knock it out. You will be glad you did. 6&

You do online checkin to take care of your documents and other information prior to arriving at the port. You will need to print out documents to get access to the checkin area at the port. For the airline - you pretty much are just telling them you will be there tomorrow. You can always skip the airline checkin. Do NOT skip the cruise checkin. And, do not wait until the day before. Do it TODAY.
Prinycesa07 Posted March 26, 2014 #6 Share Posted March 26, 2014 Probably a dumb question but... What will your luggage tags say if you booked a guarantee & don't receive a cabin assignment until check in?
don't-use-real-name Posted March 26, 2014 #7 Share Posted March 26, 2014 Excellent question ! My guess only a guess is that with a limited number of guarantee staterooms to handle the luggage tags may have a unique code or cabin number assignment. The luggage will be loaded onto the ship and be located in a holding area awaiting the assignment instructions from the check in desk. When the stateroom is assigned the crew on the ship will be notified to take the luggage of Mr. & Mrs. xxxxx to that stateroom. And if an guarantee stateroom is not available then it would be appropriate for NCL to upgrade to another stateroom category and the luggage would be delivered to the door of the upgrade assignment. The key is the key to the stateroom is issued at the time of check-in and at that time you would know the status of your guarantee stateroom. I am sure that NCL has perfected something like this and it must work well as I don't read of any problems here at CC.

This is the FIRST time I have ever booked a guaranteed room and I check daily to see if they have assigned a room. Nothing yet and it really worries me that I might not even know until I get to the cruise terminal to find out. BUT, when you get to the terminal, the first thing you do is drop off your luggage prior to entering the building. So...I'm unsure what to do with the luggage? Do you just put your names only on them and they'll figure it out? Do you write that it's a guaranteed stateroom somewhere on them so they'll know which "stack" to put them in? Or do you just put the assigned category and not just a room number? AdrenalineRush Posted March 26, 2014 #9 Share Posted March 26, 2014 If your cabin hasnt been assigned by the time you check in, just ask the porter to check the manifest. He will have your assignment and put tags on your bags. Its very rare not to get your assignment prior to arriving at the terminal.
don't-use-real-name Posted March 26, 2014 #10 Share Posted March 26, 2014 mitsugirly - - - You should call NCL or contact your PCC or TA if booking thru that source to find out what is the protocol. Maybe your guarantee stateroom status will be confirmed well be the sailing date - so don't print out any luggage tags with blanks on them until the last moment. The luggage tags have a small space to put your name and are printed out with your stateroom assignment - that is if you have a stateroom assigned. I take sticky address labels and place them in couple open spots on the stateroom luggage stickers. If your baggage has wheels and the primary handle is on the side of the bag with the trolley handle on the top my plan would be to put the luggage tags on both these spots for easy identifying. I also take clear wrapping tape and tape over the tags to give added heft to keeping the tags in place and not ripping off. It helps too that if you are using the same black communist suitcase that 40% of the traveling public (I mean comrades) uses to place some distinctive marking or tag like a colored ribbon strap to make your bag look and appear different. So call and find out how this is handled instead of being in a panic mode at the last minute. Probably nothing to really worry about but then who needs worry and unanswered questions at the last minute in check in line !
don't-use-real-name Posted March 26, 2014 #11 Share Posted March 26, 2014 From the NCL Website regarding GTY Staterooms: Norwegians get great deals. Save when you choose a Guarantee Stateroom (GTY) and we'll pick your cabin for you - an awesome way to get more bang for your buck. Guarantees ensure your stateroom category or BETTER for the lowest fare. A Guarantee is a great opportunity to save, but does not mean you will always receive an upgrade or an unobstructed stateroom view. Once you book, we'll assign your cabin number sometime after final payment has been received, up to the day of sailing. ***Note Line 3: "Once -----...----- up to the day of sailing" Now how is that for definite maybe ! mylife4Jesus Posted March 26, 2014 #12 Share Posted March 26, 2014 To those asking about guarantee cabin assignments I don't know how many days out you are but I received my room number 7 days out..
garycarla Posted March 26, 2014 #13 Share Posted March 26, 2014 Even if you get your GTY cabin, it could be changed - rare, but it happens. For EVERYONE - if you show up at the pier without luggage tags, they will give you some right there. That covers the GTY folks and anyone that forgot them. hominid Posted March 27, 2014 #14 Share Posted March 27, 2014 Also, don't forget to print your edocs PRIOR to 48 hrs before departure. Once you are 48 hrs from departure, you can no longer print those edocs.
Prinycesa07 Posted March 27, 2014 #15 Share Posted March 27, 2014 Thanks for the answer! I check daily to see if we've been given a cabin but I'm guessing we won't receive it for awhile as we're still 4 weeks out :)

That covers the GTY folks and anyone that forgot them. ...and anyone not interested of playing a pre-schooler with an arts and crafts project. ;) As long as porters have the tags available with ease, we won't be using anything else - we have enough to worry about with getting all the luggage through airports etc and don't want any extra hassle for possible hotel checkouts (for lending a stapler). rvsullivan Posted March 27, 2014 #17 Share Posted March 27, 2014 They don't take any luggage at the pier without putting tags on them. You will have a room assignment when you arrive at the pier. All of the porters have a master list of every passenger. They will look you up and find your room assignment and apply the "good" luggage tags. Most of the time we don't even bother with the tags anymore and just let the porters put them on at the pier.

FireEater Posted March 28, 2014 #19 Share Posted March 28, 2014 Doing it on line will save time at the check in counter where they will take your credit card to set up your pass. Could save 10 min or so doing it online prior to arriving. Do not wait until the morning of cruise to print anything out. Your account has been frozen from printing it. Don't ask me how I know:rolleyes:
