138east Posted April 11, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 11, 2014 UPDATES WILL BE ON THE EAST COAST DEPARTURES FORUM Four reconstruction events will affect Newark Airport and transportation routes to Cape Liberty in 2014 and beyond. The two events with major effects are scheduled to start in April and May. The exact effects of these events are not yet known. If you're sailing from Cape Liberty or flying to Newark Airport, you should check back for updates as more info becomes available. Newark Airport - Major Starting May 1, 2014, the Airtrain at Newark Airport is scheduled to be closed for 75 days (approximately July 15). This will affect: 1) Transportation between terminals 2) Newark Airport train station will be closed and trains will not stop there 3) Hotel and car rental shuttle pickup points will change http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2023788 http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/201...ing_may_1.html Cape Liberty - Major Starting April, 12, 2014, the Pulaski Skyway (Routes 1 & 9 Eastbound to NYC- Holland Tunnel) will be closed for two years. Traffic patterns will change drastically and are expected to affect traffic on the NJ Turnpike Extension (I78), which is a major access route to Cape Liberty from Exit 14A. http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2020367 http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/201..._april_12.html Weekend Path Closure – World Trade Center Service - Minor Weekend Path service between Exchange Place and World Trade Center will be suspended for the rest of 2014 and possibly into 2015. This does not affect Cape Liberty directly. However, folks planning to stay in the Newark area precruise and take Path to the World Trade Center on a Saturday or Sunday will be affected. http://www.panynj.gov/path/path-forward.html Bayonne Bridge Reconstruction - Minor There is a major reconstruction project on the Bayonne Bridge. Currently, the closures are midnight to 8 am, but the bridge is scheduled to be closed 8 weekends in 2014. The dates of these weekends has not yet been published. http://www.nj.com/jjournal-news/inde...ces_eight.html __________________

The Pulaski skyway as stated effects turnpike to Bayonne traffic and also Holland Tunnel to Bayonne Traffic. As always, if you are driving into NJ remember it is against the law to pump your own gas however gas is about 20 to 30cents cheaper in Jersey then the surrounding states. bphman Posted April 11, 2014 #4 Share Posted April 11, 2014 The Pulaski Skyway I don't believe will have a horrible effect since the Bayonne Extension of the Turnpike (Exit 14, and please no "what exit in New Jersey do you live on" jokes) is the preferred route to the pier anyway. There may be an effect trying to get into the city. I always avoid the Pulaski because it is a narrow and dangerous roadway and is best appreciated from afar since I find it a beautiful engineering wonder. The Airtran had been out of service in the past and the Port Authority did a fairly good job substituting buses. I think it will have more of an effect on those who park and fly as opposed to those flying in for a cruise so I wouldn't worry.

As always, if you are driving into NJ remember it is against the law to pump your own gas however gas is about 20 to 30cents cheaper in Jersey then the surrounding states. The trip from the airport to the port is short but the above stated construction patterns could increase a 15-20 minute trip by a half hour. And be careful driving when in NJ or you are apt to be the recipient of our famous bird salute. Edited April 11, 2014 by drfun48

Coming from the South, I would take Exit 13 on the NJ Turnpike and cross the Goethals Bridge, catch 440 north thru Bayonne to the pier. I think that would be a safer route. Wine-O Posted April 12, 2014 #8 Share Posted April 12, 2014 Wine-O If you cross the Goethals bridge you are in Staten Island.... Yes, but you avoid the Pulaski Skyway. Take the Goethals then 440 North over the Bayonne Bridge to the pier. A few years ago there was heavy construction on the Pulaski Skyway where traffic was backed up for hours. Some folks missed their cruise because they couldn't get to the pier going that way. Now, with the construction of raising the height of the bridge, I would avoid that route like the plague.
mapleleafvoyage Posted April 12, 2014 #9 Share Posted April 12, 2014 Hi All! And, Carol, thank you for posting this! I have a question... we are staying at the Ramada Plaza... (through trinity reservations) Can you tell us if we are changed? I have arranged a ride with an independent driver... (I will call them to make sure all is well.) Just curious if anything much will be different for us? Last time we stayed here, we took the monorail over to the train, into the city.. will this not be an option now? We are on the May 11th cruise..
cruiseacecat Posted April 12, 2014 #10 Share Posted April 12, 2014 Well, this is certainly going to make getting back to Baltimore on Amtrak on 4 May an adventure. Hope they have the shared shuttles to downtown Newark station.
Viva_la_Vida Posted April 12, 2014 #11 Share Posted April 12, 2014 I just booked the Hampton on Staten Island that includes a free shuttle. What should I ask/tell the driver and how much time should I allow to get to the port? Sent from my iPhone using Forums

It's a short 15-20 minute drive, and you don't have to go over the Pulaski Skyway. I would ask the hotel to leave around 10:30. This will get you to the pier, have your luggage checked, check in, and be on the ship no later than 11:15.
warmwinds Posted April 12, 2014 #13 Share Posted April 12, 2014 So the Pulaski skyway thing looks like it would only affect people going to/from Manhattan? We're sailing out of Bayonne in September, arriving at EWR, staying the night at EWR, then taking a NJ taxi to the pier, then returning directly to EWR after the cruise. I'm thinking (hoping) that none of the issues you stated with affect us (and thanks for posting!).

I was confusing it with the Newark Bay Bridge (Rt 78) which connects Newark with Bayonne. That's were the construction was that backed up traffic for hours causing folks to miss the cruise.
