bert425 Posted July 16, 2014 #1 Share Posted July 16, 2014 Apologies if this has been covered to death, but I was unable to find an answer. we're going on our first HAL cruise (Noodham) on Nov 3. I know that balcony smoking is allowed (my smoking Sister in Law was happy about that). but what about in the casino, or bars in the ship? is smoking allowed in common areas? PathfinderEss Posted July 16, 2014 #2 Share Posted July 16, 2014 Welcome to Cruise Critic. Here you go from Hal's website. This should answer all your questions on smoking. For the comfort of all of our guests, all staterooms (cabins), showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. While smoking is not permitted in staterooms, guests are allowed to smoke on stateroom verandahs. Smoking is also permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows unless otherwise noted. Stateroom verandahs Casino (Active players only) Seaview Bar Outside DecksSports Deck Observation Deck (ms Prinsendam, ms Eurodam, ms Nieuw Amsterdam, ms Noordam, ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Zuiderdam only) Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed and on stateroom verandahs. Electronic cigarettes are permitted in staterooms but not in other public areas of the ship other than on outside decks designated as smoking areas. Any guest who smokes inside staterooms in violation of our policy will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation.

I know that balcony smoking is allowed (my smoking Sister in Law was happy about that). but what about in the casino, or bars in the ship? is smoking allowed in common areas? The only inside area is the casino and you must be playing to smoke. On the larger ships there is a smoking and non smoking area There is smoking permitted in a specific area outside on the ships. On some it's the sea view pool on one side (nice spot actually) More info in "Before you go". Which ship are you sailing? thetexasaggiecruiser Posted July 16, 2014 #5 Share Posted July 16, 2014 We were last on the Noordam in 2012. Only one of the pool areas allow smoking, and we didn't find it invasive at all. YMMV, as invasive is subjective, of course. In the casino, we noticed how few people were smoking at the tables. However, people do just puff away, so and no one made an issue of it. We don't do slots, so I don't remember if that was more common. We cruised during a lot of football games, and spent plenty of time in the sports bar, (adjacent to the casino), and lot of people smoked there. but we weren't bothered by it. It's well ventilated. That being said, it really depends on how sensitive you are to cigarette smoke. We have spent a lot of time in pool halls and bars over the years, so it isn't as invasive to us as it may be to others. But we were appreciative of how polite the smokers were wrt awareness of others in the public areas. Sent by magic. Or mobile. Same thing.

thetexasaggiecruiser Posted July 16, 2014 #7 Share Posted July 16, 2014 Also, tell your brother and SIL to ask for the covered ashtray, to reduce fire danger. HAL has some, but they may want to bring their own. Sent by magic. Or mobile. Same thing.

Rare POA1 Posted July 16, 2014 #10 Share Posted July 16, 2014 May I just commend all of the posters above for having a civil, straightforward question & answer thread that covered smoking without vitriol. legalslave Posted July 16, 2014 #11 Share Posted July 16, 2014 On the Zuiderdam this past May, there was a smoking side for slots and a non smoking side in the casino. Diane

KirkNC Posted July 16, 2014 #15 Share Posted July 16, 2014 Be aware that on most cruises they will designate at least one night in the casino as smoke free.
mrscopper Posted July 16, 2014 #16 Share Posted July 16, 2014 I think they would make more money if casino was smoke free.
Typhoon1 Posted July 16, 2014 #17 Share Posted July 16, 2014 I think they would make more money if casino was smoke free. Not sure about that. On MSC, there was a designated "smoking room". The place was always packed in the evening.
jaguarstyper Posted July 17, 2014 #18 Share Posted July 17, 2014 (edited) I think they would make more money if casino was smoke free. I'm not sure about that. In the casinos I go to frequently, there are smoking tables and non-smoking tables. On busy nights it can be a problem finding a seat at a smoking table. Its never, ever a problem finding a seat at a non-smoking table. And there are less non-smoking tables. I guarantee if casinos determined they would make more money with a non-smoking casino, every one in the world would be non-smoking. I've personally never been in a casino that is all non-smoking. Casinos have figured out every possible way to maximise their profits and will implement anything proven to do so. You can bet your last dollar they have done significant research on it, and they really do know what they are doing. Casinos here are totally non-smoking - and in certain areas are frequented by Chinese - who are reputed to be heavy smokers. But such is the law here. And the casinos are packed every night. But such is the law here. And the casinos are packed every night. Your casinos are non-smoking because its the law, not because non-smoking casinos are more profitable. Just saying.
