Danube River water levels

The good news: It´s currently raining here in the South (which is the main area the Danube river is getting the water from). We´re even under a weather alert... in my case 30 to 50 l/sqm. In the Alps they even expect a monthly amount of rain during a 24 hour period. So this time it´s really raining! This kind of weather is the one we need to fill up the rivers.

Over the weekend we will have a significant temperature drop (actually we had temps feeling more like spring over the last two weeks). So we´re getting close to freezing point and snow is in the forecast for the weekend even for the lowlands (meaning below 500 m above sea level).

So this is really good news for all of you going on a Christmas market cruise. The melting snow will provide more water over the next maybe one or two weeks.

We are on the Viking Baldur in Nuremberg today. We have been told we will know tonight about a ship swap from Regensburg. Also, was told yesterday a Viking ship made it to Budapest. Will keep everyone posted. Raining in Nuremberg.

I'm leaving tomorrow for cruise from Vienna to Nurenberg. The weather forecast shows rain nearly every day. So...good news and bad news..high water but rainy weather.

I hope the rainfall is significant enough to make a difference. Have a great trip!

Cruised from Passau to Melk & Kelms then on to Vienna. We will not be able to sail from Vienna to Budapest due to the low water levels (Nov. 20, 07:20 GMT+1). A wonderful trip so far with beautiful weather (sunshine=low water). We are looking forward to Vienna today and cruising the blacktop river tomorrow ;-)

What cruise line are you on?

We are in Vienna on Viking Atla and were told tonight that the water is very low, but we are going to sail to Budapest tonight. We have to sail very slowly and won't get there til about 2:30pm Saturday. Ok with that, did a ship swap yesterday and we were all holding our breath that we might have to get on a bus and stay at a hotel tomorrow night.

Well latest news from the Baldur. We just left Nuremberg and are sailing to Regensburg, will get to Regensburg around 1pm on Saturday, then Sunday morning we get on a bus to Passau to board the Embla, and hopefully sail to Budapest with the usual stops. Viking is giving us the optional Mozart/Strauss concert.

We're also on the Viking Atla after starting on the Jarl. We're currently sailing to Budapest. It was a last minute decision by Viking, very touch and go. We're going slow, but everyone seems very happy to be able to stay on the ship. I'm looking forward to a slower morning and some sailing time tomorrow.

Have you had the opportunity to take in any Christmas markets?

Just the one in Vienna next to the Rathaus. We found it more nic-nacks then Christmas items. Perhaps because so early in the season. Every city has had shops with great Christmas ornaments and items

Confirmed - Viking Alta departed Vienna (Nov 21 02:30, GMT+1)to sail to Budapest with enough water, Viking Embla cannot depart Vienna (Nov 21 07:00 GMT+1) because " the is not enough water". Perhaps because Viking needs the Embla in Passau we are bus riding today. I was extremely pleased with Viking until today. It is one thing to ride busses because of low water, quite another to ride busses so Viking can ship position

The Viking Atla was here in Budapest after our all day bus ride from Vienna. So Viking flat out lied to us and bussed us to Budapest so they could use our ship to pickup passengers that were bussed to Passau. Very poor ending to our trip.
