Again - I've never seen any suggested tip for a Maitre d'. Where exactly do you see that?:)

No one way to do it..

But if i'm unhappy with my table arrangements and he went out of his way to PROMPTLY correct the situation.. I might slip him something at the end..

Just found this interesting article.. not sure whether I believe it all.

We haven't always tipped the Maitre 'd. When we first started doing it, we did it because we thought it was expected. A few years ago, we became aware of the responsibilities that the job entails, as mentioned above. If we see the M'd, if our dining experience is good, then we still tip at the end of the cruise.

We've had a couple of exceptional Maitre 'ds who bent over backwards to make sure we were having a good time, who were present at our table every evening, and who were so personable that it enhanced our dining experience. Those gentlemen definintely received a tip!

We don't tip anyone and everyone on the cruise. We do the usual tipping for our dining team, room steward and Maitre 'd. They get the minimum and usually extra. We may tip a favorite bartender or server throughout the cruise and we usually tip if we spend a good amount of time in a piano bar. Other than that, we don't use spa services, don't have kids in Camp Carnival, so we have no one else to tip. Whether or not we tip in specialty restaurants depends on the guidelines of each particular cruiseline and our enjoyment of our experience.

Just off the Miracle and cruise director, Mark Hawkins, strongly suggested to throw $10-$20 in the envelope for the Maitre'D during our debarkation talk. He said they manage the whole staff, train them, coordinate getting out all the meals in a timely fashion and the seating arrangements. We never even met him. We were on the second floor and only heard him during the daily announcements during dinner. On the last night of the cruise, we were greeted by the assistant Maitre'D who we had not seen before and sure enough, my DH had the envelope for him. DH will always do what he is told is proper - gotta love him even when I don't agree whith him!

have only ever tipped one - KEN - not only was he very entertaining, but he stopped by our table every evening just to make sure we were okay...or at least he made us feel that way! the rest of them are heard from occassionally when introducing entertainment or staff and are very visible on the last night...otherwise, i don't even see them....and they are well compensated for the work that they do "behind the scenes"

I have always tipped the maitre'd.

My last cruise on the CCL Spirit our maitre'd was at the door to greet your every night, came by the tables every night, chatted for a bit, he sang, played the piano, and he was very entertaining. I really appreciated the fact that he seemed to care about the passengers. We tipped him more than usual. Even though he has a paid position I think its always nice for them to receive something extra for a job well done. :D

we were on the liberty 8/1. . .5 people in our group...mom, dad, daughter (8) and son (20 months) and nanny. they sat 4 of us together and my 20 month old son was at a different table at a different dining time. . .

went to the maitre'de to ask why son couldn't sit at open seat at our table--get this--was told it is a security issue--can't just change seats. . .hummmm

management??? yah right. . .how do you think that other table would feel having to feed my kid.

needless to say wasn't on my tipping radar

 Sounds like gross miscommunication to me. Makes no sense that a 20 m.o. would be put at a separate table from his parents/nanny. Never heard that one before. I'm sure he ended up at your table, right?

Hello?? Donna, where did you come up with that figure of $2.00 per person?

To my knowledge, there's never been any mention anywhere that suggests a certain amount to tip the Maitre d'.

Well, of course now I won't be able to proove it but I SWEAR that I saw it either in the Carnival Capers or in the envelope provided for our convenience! I PROMISE it was from Carnival and not something I heard!

Speaking of the dress code issue and people "knowing", I was standing in the buffet line and a lady in front of me, obviously distressed, asked me if I KNEW that Carnival applied the tip to the Sail and Sign card! Not THAT I KNEW and I was amazed at how she could have missed it!!!!

Why is the Maitre'de not autotipped? I don't even really know the aspects of his job. Maybe his salary is much larger than everyone elses?

Your post answered your own question. He doesn't generally do anything that directly impacts your cruise. He is a manager. He has a larger salary. I've never had reason to tip one, and can't think of a reason why I would.

Mark-- to clarify your post- its the Matre D job to put seating assignments together., If you got wonderful seats with great dinner mates with awesome waiters--- thats because He put you there.

So his job does directly have an impact on your dining.

How easy is it to get a table for 2? I'm going on the Paradise & REALLY want to be alone with my boyfriend.

There are a few tables for 2 on the Victory.

http://www.carnival.com//Deck_Plan.aspx?shipCode=VI&deckCode=4

tables for two on the Victory are located around the railing up on the upper deck of the dining area.

there are a few on the main floor.

Does anyone tip the casino employees? Did you know that most of the casino employees wages come from tips? AMAZING--casinos make so much money and pay their employees little salary...So, DONT FORGET to tip the casino workers!

I had a maitre'de/head waiter on my family's Adventure of the Seas cruise in July 2004 who was awesome and deserved a tip. He came by to our table every day and interacted with my group of 37 people. We wanted apple pie that wasn't on the menu the entire cruise, so he had the chef bake us one each day ... until it was perfect the final night. I tipped him extra because he was truly great. He joked with us, remembered our names and just generally showed us that he appreciated our presence.

I sailed on Jewel of the Seas in January '05 and saw the maitre'de/head waiter once the entire cruise. Unfortunately, they charged the tips to my credit card and the line was too long the final day to change it.

Since then, I refuse to put my gratuities on my card and pay only in cash directly to the people I want to pay.

Rarely does the maitre'd do anything. On seven cruises I have only tipped the dude once. Last summer on our European cruise we were with some real losers so we asked to move and requested a private table with an ocean view. He came through for us so I came through for him. On last weeks cruise I only saw the guy once and so saw no need to tip him

He had the waiters sing on two occasions, he used the microphone to yell OPAH and to have us twirl our napkins. I didn't know better about the tipping ( being my first cruise and not having read about tipping him either )so on our 2nd night of dining I gave him a very complimentary note about how I enjoyed the atmosphere and the food. I guess he thought I was tipping him and he kissed my hand. My husband was against the tipping thing since he didn't feel he went out of his way to serve us. So he remained tipless on the last night. Sorry George~:(

Big_duck,

YOU GOT IT, YOU GOT IT, BRILLANT.

We all boycott tipping Maitre'ds until they start strictly enforcing the dress code. BRILLANT!!!

Also, with any job, some people are born to do them and some should never even try. So some M'ds just have their hand out and some really want your dining experience to be special. [and many between the two extremes]

Back to the boycott,

Start immediately!!!!

Dan

That would be nice except that there is no dress code only suggest dress. Not required or recommended.

If everyone on the ship tips the maitre 'd only $1 each per week, the maitre 'd would be collecting $2,000 per week. How much per week do you make? If the maitre 'd does something special for you, and you want to leave a tip, that is fine. Otherwise, the maitre 'd is part of management and should not expect a tip for simply doing his/her job.

I won't even consider tipping the maitre 'd. Just won't.

I pay my $10 pd/pp tip on my S&S card. I am only likely to give additional to either my room steward, or my waiter.

I just don't overthink the tipping.

I let Carnival divide up the tips... not my issue... I'm on a cruise to let go and enjoy... not try to run Carnival's business.

If Carnival want's to give some of the tip to the maitre 'd, so beit. No sweat off my browe.
