Credit card travel insurance

Recommended Posts

My TA says that even if you are sailing from Brisbane to Sydney,as it is still classed as an overseas trip as you may have to divert to international waters for some reason. I think if you are concerned about your cc insurance, ring them and find out for sure. We have used NAB platinum insurance for years but touch wood, never had to make a claim.

Your TA is both right [in that some insurers class any cruise as O/S] and wrong [in that some class it as domestic]. It really comes down to the terms of the cover always read the terms.

I got suckered into a new Amex Card with the promise of free Travel Insurance. Once I read the small print, I found out that the WHOLE holiday ( the moment you leave gome till the moment you arrive back home) must be paid with the card for ANY claim to be made during the holiday.

I rang them for clarification and two issues arose. If I drove from my home (in country NSW) to Sydney to get on a cruise I wouldn't be covered for ANY event during the holiday...because I drove myself for part of the holiday, instead of using the Card to get me to Sydney. Also, one of the airlines used during the holiday wouldn't take Amex...so once again, the Insurance is void as part of the trip was not paid with the card.

something to be aware of...

It's all in the fine print.

Believe me I make a living out of fine print, read the whole thing.

They always go out far enough to open the Casino, so in my opinion we are in international waters,

Being outside territorial waters doesn't make a trip to a foreign country or similar, as is often required in the wording.

While some are using different Bank providers on this thread, it has been my understanding the platinum credit facility is provided by Visa or MasterCard and it may be through them that the free travel insurance is then underwritten by whatever other insurer is the main one making the rules.

All the ones I've seen are agreements between the bank and the underwriting insurer. AFAIK Visa and MC are the credit companies, and brands, responsible for the credit transactions networks but not ancillary benefits. Even separate benefit programs they offer are outsourced.

My understanding is the benefits for a different level are set by them as minimum standards to qualify, but its up to the bank signatories offering that product as to the specifics of what they offer as long as they meet requirements.

I know about the fees I was just surprised that they only needed to put $250 on to get insurance cover.

Yes, only needs $250 to go towards any part of the trip (i.e can be the cruise, the airine tickets, the accommodation, anything). We normally do it for the deposit on the cruise as that is what is usually booked first.:D

NAB requires a $500 minimum spend on any component of the trip (2014 Product Disclosure Statement), whereas in 2011 the PDS stated 100% of the travel need to be paid with the card. If you have read your credit card conditions a few years back, I would recommend going to the web site and downloading the latest PDS.

We have paid the balance of the cruise with our platinum NAB card. But if the cruise is not considered overseas travel, then the car rental part of the insurance will not be kicking in? We have two car rentals booked, at Burnie and Hobart, so we are just going to get the Aust Post insurance, where they mention, in writing, about cruise insurance on their web page (which I posted the link to earlier).

We just can't afford to go on a cruise without the medical part of the travel insurance. The car hire has a big excess, but the medical is an unknown that could be tens of thousands. For another $100 bucks or so I am glad the OP started this thread and got us thinking!

Yes, only needs 4250 to go towards any part of the trip (i.e can be the cruise, the airine tickets, the accommodation, anything). We normally do it for the deposit on the cruise as that is what is usually booked first.:D

Thanks

I don't have a credit card [maybe the only person in Aus] but I know that ANZ StGeorge and NAB have all been bugging us about one I'll have a look.

Same here Mic, then you have cover from the start.

Plus the annual fees for having the card.

Hi Mike,

Our ANZ credit card is free of fees as long as we spend $20000 on it in a twelve month period. Otherwise it is $87 which isn't much compared to some other cards and also the cost of travel insurance.

Mike, are you using the ANZ credit card travel insurance for your next trip.

Cheers,

Janet

I don't have a credit card with insurance, used to, but didn't like the nearly $300 fees. I wasn't travelling in those days. I now get annual insurance as I try to holiday twice a year at least. Just paid $386 with no excess, or $291 with $200 excess. Covers everwhere except the states. With annual one needs to check the maximum length of the holdiay. The one I use has a 60 day limit. most are 45. My next cruise is 46 days, last one was 60. Have claimed once after a fall in Berlin last year. Prompt payment. K

Ours is part of a banking package.

We cannot use the CC insurance for the VOTS sampler in Feb as it is a domestic cruise but will be using it for the April trip to South Africa.:D

Small question and maybe I've just spoken to the wrong insurers so far, but those that don't cover USA say that they don't cover medical on a ship as they count that as USA provider.

Does that apply yo yours?

Ours is the same investment package from ANZ also, so no fees for Visa and Amex cards, just our Qantas membership thats linked.

We are off next week, flying to Singapore, then 11 night Sapphire cruise and will be using our Credit card Travel Insurance again.

If you are using your Credit card for travel insurance just remember to take a copy of bank statement showing the part of travel that you paid for and Emergency contact details of the insurer in the case you have to make a claim.

Previously they had also given me a Claim number prior as we need it for a something we had booked that required proof of insurance.

Each card is different so you have to check the requirements of each.

$250 is the minimum I've heard, but others have things like the travel e.g. flight tickets have to be bought with the card.

It wouldn't then be covered under the international travel insurance.

Some cards have other insurances included though, so it could be elsewhere as well.

I know all about reading the terms, just it might be the tipping point to make me take a Credit Card.

Just got the $6 a day insurance from Aust Post, and it actually lists "Domestic Cruising" along with the various countries it covers. (There is a $10 a day that does USA and some others)

Unlimited medical, and $3000 hire car. I know some of the others have higher levels for hire car excess insurance, but we are comfortable with that.
