jbd2003 Posted February 10, 2015 #1 Share Posted February 10, 2015 Does HAL still have the midnight chocolate buffet or whatever they called it. We went once but were so tired by the time pictures were taken that we went to bed. We did stay up once though and it was fabulous. I'm just curious. Oceanwench Posted February 10, 2015 #2 Share Posted February 10, 2015 I haven't seen it in years. The last one I attended was held at the Lido pool. Colossal waste of food when all was said and done. I also saw people sticking their fingers in the chocolate fountains.
jbd2003 Posted February 10, 2015 Author #3 Share Posted February 10, 2015 I wondered why I haven't heard any discussion. Our first cruise was on HAL Zaandam in 2003 and I remembered how much we enjoyed it. Ewwwwwww, their finger in the chocolate. That is disgusting. Thanks for answering me. Now I won't have to stay up till midnight!:D
Oceanwench Posted February 10, 2015 #4 Share Posted February 10, 2015 It went from a chocolate extravaganza to a dessert extravaganza. I remember going to them in the MDR in the afternoon! But don't go to bed too early, there is a "snack" served in the Lido around 11 p.m. that includes all kinds of food and desserts. It's every night, I think. I am usually in the Piano Bar, so I don't attend!
jhannah Posted February 10, 2015 #5 Share Posted February 10, 2015 The chocolate/dessert extravaganzas were always so lovely. But to me it wasn't worth attending after a while. Although they were tasty enough, none (whether HAL, Disney, Princess, or Royal Caribbean) were ever as delicious as they looked.
Krazy Kruizers Posted February 10, 2015 #6 Share Posted February 10, 2015 The last dessert extravaganza we had was on the Westerdam when we did a repositioning cruise from Ft Lauderdale to San Diego -- 21 days -- held in the atrium around 3 PM. It was on all three levels.
Krazy Kruizers Posted February 10, 2015 #7 Share Posted February 10, 2015 Checked my notes from the Westerdam. It wasn't called the Dessert Extravaganza -- it was called "Tea Extravaganza as there wasn't any afternoon that day in the dining room. You could get tea -- but many people were ordering cocktails and there was a special drink that day -- prosseco and raspberry kir -- we got those -- delicious. scamper Posted February 11, 2015 #9 Share Posted February 11, 2015 The thing with most of the desserts there is: they look great but don't taste all that great. I last went to one three cruises ago...to take pictures.

Krazy Kruizers Posted February 11, 2015 #12 Share Posted February 11, 2015 Wow KK, those drinks look wonderful, how did I miss that? I think it was a one time only thing that the Westerdam did knowing that the dessert extravaganza was going to end. Those drinks were good. take us away Posted February 11, 2015 #13 Share Posted February 11, 2015 Longer cruises tend to have a dessert extravaganza which now seems to be in the afternoon and in the atrium as previously mentioned. There was one on a long cruise last year which was beautiful and the best part was, not everything was edible and many pieces were just for show (chocolate covered foam or wood sculpture) so less waste. jayisgerman Posted February 11, 2015 #14 Share Posted February 11, 2015 In December 2013 on the Westerdam (Caribbean) - there was none! In May 2012 on the Oosterdam (Alaska) - they had it at night. :) I am hoping for it on the Zaandam when we go in May back to Alaska. :D
TheEmerson Posted February 11, 2015 #15 Share Posted February 11, 2015 June 2014 on the Maasdam trip from Montreal to Boston had the Dessert Extravaganza night at the Lido Pool.
bert425 Posted February 11, 2015 #16 Share Posted February 11, 2015 Noordam Nov. 2014 had it as the "Tea Extravaganza" in the afternoon. and it was like wild, uncaged pigs rushing the buffet lines, rather than servers with trays (as the typical tea would have been). just awful. lddam Posted February 11, 2015 #17 Share Posted February 11, 2015 This is a little off topic, but I'm going to risk the question, anyway. The last time we cruised HAL was on the old Noordam during its last year of service. At the time, they served a bread pudding with a vanilla sauce that was out of this world. We are booked on the Maasdam in May and I was wondering if that bread pudding is still being served. Thanks in advance.

They sometimes do a chocolate bread pudding or other flavors but most usually the 'classic'. :)
