You don't need screens. The theater is big, but not THAT big. Our personal opinion of the magic show is NOT good. Be prepared for things to just disappear and never reappear. Or worse yet... the curtain closes and then things reappear. Pretty much my 3 year old does tricks like that. He does have about 3 impressive tricks during the show, but he does a lot of dancing along with the dancers... which he just should not do. The show needs A LOT of work. And I won't even mention the lame multi-camera illusion they made.

Wow - I will have to respectfully disagree, however it is your opinion and you are entitled to it.

Drew Thomas is a master illusionist and his show is simply amazing! Perhaps you can tell me what in particular does not re-appear?

Drew's show is entertaining and includes the Royal Caribbean Singers and Dancers - why do you feel he shouldn't be involved in some of the production numbers?

There is nothing lame about this show whatsoever. I guess skeptics will always be skeptics :)

Agreed. My wife and I have seen Drew and we are looking forward to seeing him again. We thought the show was pretty amazing and entertaining.

Robyn, thanks for doing this "live from" review. I will be going on the Freedom for the first time in July and found this review to be awesome and very informative. I am so excited to be on this ship. It's also my first time on any Freedom class.

Amazing live review, Robyn! I'm sad that it's over, but, luckily, we'll be on her in 19 days!

I'd be interested in knowing the average age of the people saying the show is amazing compared to the average age of the people that heavily criticize the show. Mainly because, as someone that was born in the early 80's, I (and my wife who is the same age) cringe at the thought of having the "Royal Caribbean Singers and Dancers" appear at any show (that didn't advertise they'd appear). That very much reminds me of the scene in Casino with the Sam Rothstein Dancers. :)

Are they matching the whole time and doing the whole 60's and 70's Broadway/Vegas thing? We don't criticize people for enjoying what they enjoy, but that kind of act is not our cup of tea. The Boston or Van Halen cover band on the other hand? We're very much looking forward to that show! Do you recall who the cover band on your sailing was, Robyn?

The RC singers and dancers are not doing any production numbers during the Magic Show - is this what you are referring to? I don't go out of my way to attend the production shows either, especially if I have seen them before. Some shows are definitely better than others. There were no "cover" bands on our sailing.

Hmmm. I recall seeing on multiple occasions people mentioning a Van Halen or Boston cover band or "show" on Freedom in the past. I'm most likely mistaken.

I was mentioning the singers and dancers because of the poster you quoted mentioned the magician was dancing with them. We're actually looking forward to the magic show, but we've never seen one where there was also singing and dancing, hence the Sam Rothstein Dancers comment. In that scene I'm referring to, there are typical late 70's disco dancers in all matching outfits just prancing around and doing their thing. That's the type of stuff my wife and I aren't into, and would like to avoid as to not be rude by getting up to leave after the show starts. Even if it means missing Drew. We watched him on America's Got Talent and really enjoyed his work!

There may have been a Beatlemania show, or an ABBA show at some point, although I cannot recall if it was on the FOS or another ship?

The dancing is strictly part of the magic act and not as entertainment on it's own. You will not have to leave the show, I'm sure of it.

Thanks for the info! Your review and answers to people's questions has taught me more about Freedom than a few hours of searching archived threads. Invaluable info for people sailing in the near future!

ckrobyn,

Thanks so much for taking the time out of your vacation to take us along with you and answer questions. We will be cruising on the Freedom in August in a Royal Family Suite and you mentioned the suite breakfast in Giovanni's and Chops but I was not clear on whether they offer a menu and waiters or if it was just to bring your plate in from the Windjammer. We have always enjoyed the suite make-to-order breakfasts in the specialty restaurants and will be very disappointed if this perk has been taken away. Thanks again for your help and I am glad you had a great cruise!!

Our family is just really into magic, so I guess it's just harder to impress us. Remember when the dancers all disappeared from the floating cage? Pretty good trick... but then the curtain closed before the dancers reappeared. No illusion there.. but I don't want to ruin it for anyone. I'm sure the majority love it.

If you saw him on AGT you pretty much saw his show. I was an 80's kid too, and can pretty confidently say to make the most of your time on your cruise if there's something else you'd like to do, do it.

Robyn - wish I knew about your live blog.... we were on the Navigator during this same week. Would have been nice to compare with Freedom during the cruise, even during the rough weather :)

That's awesome! We were neighbors at just about every port :) The seas were probably the least calm out of all my 26 cruises! Luck of the draw I guess. We had an outstanding cruise in spite of it!
