sunset veranda balconies

Enjoyed aft many times....not larger except for 2 in the middle of each deck (steward's 'mop' room beside so balcony extends across the cabin and their room). Soot only a problem at times when wind is blowing the wrong way but steward kept it clean. Shade may not be available at certain times of day, but port and starboard verandas have same situation (morning or afternoon).

Soot can happen with the way the weather is. We were about 6 cabins from the aft on the starboard side on Voyager recently, and the way the smoke was being pushed down and sideways across the ship meant that a couple of days we had soot on our balcony, and those balconies on Voyager are sort of cut into the hull if anyone hasn't done on of the first gen Voyager class on RCI. We didn't expect it.

So while those sunset balconies are sort of tiered and open, there is a big overhang higher up, and it would really depend on the weather pressures for the smoke.

We don't like walking that far all the time (particularly if you just want to go back to the cabin for something quickly) so our preference is the balconies on the slant of the humps. We got the smaller one on our Solstice trip, but it was still fantastically huge for us. We couldn't believe how big the one next door was when we had a look around. The trouble was their family thought it was nice and big too, and lovely to have the balcony door open and lots of them coming in and out banging the cabin door. We have booked the same type of cabin next time.

Does anyone know if the partitions between balconies can be removed? We're two couples with adjoining sunset veranda cabins and we're hoping we can remove it so we have one large balcony between us and each of us has access to the other without having to go out in the hallway.

  • 4 weeks later...

Is one deck better than any other in choosing a sunset veranda? Or is it only important to get the middle ones for the width? I ask because I've mostly cruised in NCL aft balconies and deck 10 tends to have larger balconies than the other decks.

Our SV on the Solstice (8351) had a balcony the same size as all others. Looking at the middle two cabins on a deck plan, I see no 'broom closet' and the balconies don't look any larger than ours was. We had no soot problem whatsoever. Yes, the doors between balconies do open, as least those shown as 'interlocking cabins' - we know because ours unlatched in a fierce storm and was banging back & forth. Luckily my brave husband ventured out and was able to latch it. Our favorite thing about the SV cabin was the fact that they had the wake lighted at night - a very lovely sight!

This is the correct info. If you are in doubt, do a search for aft pics and you will see the wider balconies on each deck down the middle.

We have been "out back" on S class 3 times and have 2 more booked - both the widest one.

The SVs are almost always less $ than the C1s. The C1s get you higher if that is important.

Another advantage is that unless there is gale force winds, it is much less breezy - especially in the middle.

It is a long walk from the elevator and stairs, so if that's important, these are not for you.

Frequently they shine floodlights on the wake at night.

Bob278 previously posted this picture of the Solstice aft - if you were in 8351 look 2 rooms over to 8344 to see the extra space:

Note: Be careful using this photo if booking the Reflection and Silhouette - they seem to have different cabin numbers than the photo above. I have booked 7366 on the Silhouette, which is 7364 in the Solstice picture above. :)

One thing if your cruise is in the Summer and hot in your cruise location, an balcony without overhead protection will be hot.

We has a SV on Century from Singapore to Dubai in late March, early April 2015. It was too hot to use for the cruise, since Singapore is near the Equator and India and Persian Gulf are hot that time of the year.

Had we had a covered balcony with a breeze, it would have been better.

Does it follow that #1696 (middle cabin) on Reflection would have the same verandah as eg Solstice #8344? or have they changed the position of the stewards 'mop' room?

Not that you asked, but we just came off Reflection, 6300. It is a 2C. The balcony is larger than a 2B balcony on the same deck. It's considered a 2C because of the location - far from the elevators. I have sailed Silly in a 2D, and Reflection in a 2B also. The cabins themselves look the same. The only difference is the location and the possibility of a larger balcony such as we had in 6300.
