Any thoughts re Palma?

We are due to stop in Palma for a day on our cruise in August. It will be our first stop after 3 days at sea so we will most definitely be getting off to explore! We are just wondering if there is enough to see if we take ourselves off for an excursion. We have seen the cathedral and castle, but are wondering if this is possible to do by foot from the ship.

Thanks all

There's a Linea 1 bus which picks up at the turning circle just outside the port entrance which will take you into the centre of town or at least a fair way along the waterfront before it turns off left. That stop just round the corner is the closest to the Cathedral. It is walkable but a fair step so worth saving some time and conserving energy by utilising the bus.

One trip we love doing independently is to take this bus until it reaches the Placa d'Espanya where the main rail station is. To the left of this station across a smaller road is the old fruit train which goes through the mountains to Soller. (Beautiful journey - sit on the right as you face forwards for the most open views.)

When you get to Soller don't bother spending time here but get straight on the Soller tram to Port de Soller. You'll see it right outside the station. Port de Soller is lovely for a stroll and drink

Then we usually return by the local bus service L211- but take care you don't get the express one as that goes via the tunnel back to Palma so no views. You want the 'round the houses' bus which goes via Deia and Valledomosa and has the most fabulous views. It's like an excursion in its own right. Last time we went it was €3.65.

You need to research the timings but we usually get off this bus for a couple of hours at Valledomosa then get back on to Palma. Last time we did this though we had a long day in Palma and were off the ship by 7.30 to catch the Soller train at about 8.00. The timetable now shows 10.00 as the first train so perhaps the stop off at Valledomosa may not be practical but it's definitely worth researching getting to Port de Soller independently. Great day out!

If you don't fancy this plan for the day you could just get the bus to Valledomosa spend some time there and return to Palma. Valledomosa is lovely too.

Hope you have a great day whatever you decide.

I agree trip to Soller is worth doing. Sit at the front and enjoy a relaxing lunch.

If you really want to see the Cathedral, which is worth seeing, I would get a bus as it is a fair hike to there.

The walk is up to 2 mile along the promenade. We always get a taxi to the cathedral usually about 10-15 Euro's then behind the cathedral there are several hundred shops to keep you busy for a few hours.Make your way back to the cathedral to get a taxi back to the ship as it is impossible to get a taxi anywhere else.

love sailing with RCCL

Porto Soller is absolutely beautiful.

Last May when we cruised on Thomson Majesty we sailed round trip from Palma and arranged our own flights, so we had a couple of days pre-cruise and a week after, when we hired a car and stayed in three different places - Cala Ratjada was lovely, but the real highlight was a (relatively inexpensive) hotel on the front in Porto Soller - just across from the tram stop.

We're hoping to do this again - the only real difficulty is in finding "cruise only" prices when they want to sell you a fly-cruise.

Hi Presto2. If you have kids, I thoroughly recommend the aquarium. We did it last year and wouldn't hesitate to go back. There's also a nice beach just across the road from the aquarium too.

Thanks - no kids, but have many fishy friends at home and work that I care for so love aquariums, A nice beach is always a good option too! Thanks, will have a good look now

Last time I went to Palma there was a shuttle bus to town which stopped near the Cathedral. After a look around town and a coffee I walked back; about 2 miles and very pleasant stroll along the waterfront.
