Copper, I more question. The brackets in the white part of the bow; they are obviously used for tying something to the ship or vice versa. When would they actually be used. I can't imagine they are there for decoration.

Those openings are part of the forward mooring deck. Headlines and Breast lines can be passed through there to the dock, depending on position and dock/"dolphin" or mooring buoy

These aren't openings, they are metal brackets spaced along the top area of the bow - painted white to blend in with the background. - a backward L and a forward L together - spaced apart from the next pair.
