Luvsnorkeling Posted October 5, 2017 #1 Share Posted October 5, 2017 Several of us are sending our friends on their very first cruise next fall for their 40th wedding anniversary. I am responsible to book the cruise. Booking out this far and with RCCL's non refundable deposit policy, I'm wondering should they need to cancel for any reason if trip insurance would reimburse the non refundable deposit? Anyone know?? Clarea Posted October 5, 2017 #2 Share Posted October 5, 2017 Trip insurance should reimburse 100% if the cancellation is for a covered reason. As always, best to consult the specific policy rules.
39august Posted October 5, 2017 #3 Share Posted October 5, 2017 Perhaps, if the reason is one of the named reasons for the cancellation. Unless they have purchased "cancel for any reason", there for sure would be no coverage if they just changed their minds.

Luvsnorkeling Posted October 5, 2017 Author #6 Share Posted October 5, 2017 The problem is...I don't want to purchase the cruise if the non refundable deposit cannot be reimbursed by trip insurance, and I can't purchase a policy specific to that cruise (to read its details) until I've purchased the cruise. I just thought perhaps, with all the cruisers on this board, someone else might already have dealt with this situation...
njkruzer Posted October 5, 2017 #7 Share Posted October 5, 2017 Try buying from a 3rd party insurance company that allows you to review the policy in advance.

Try some of these websites, you can read policy details before purchase, and use the phone numbers to talk with policy specialists: www.insuremytrip.com www.squaremouth.com www.quotewright.com www.tripinsurancestore.com

mollyeilis Posted October 5, 2017 #10 Share Posted October 5, 2017 Trip insurance is specifically to cover non refundable parts of the trip. It's not to cover refundable parts. So the only question is if the policy will cover *for the reason you want to cover* Sent from my iPhone using Forums
allison0523 Posted October 5, 2017 #11 Share Posted October 5, 2017 I bought trip insurance and it has the cancel for any reason clause covers 75% of the unreimbursed cost. I don't know if there are policies that do 100%. You have to read each policy.
njmomof2 Posted October 5, 2017 #12 Share Posted October 5, 2017 I bought trip insurance and it has the cancel for any reason clause covers 75% of the unreimbursed cost. I don't know if there are policies that do 100%. You have to read each policy. No matter what type of policy you buy, if you cancel for a "covered reason" you're reimbursed at 100%. If you cancel for a "non-covered reason", you are reimbursed at the lower rate (whatever the policy dictates). Covered reasons are things like illness, accident, death, some have weather coverages. Non-covered is usually anything that is not specifically listed as a covered reason (you decided you don't want to go, your pet is sick - although some cover that - you have to work, unless your policy covers work related cancellations, the itinerary changes and you don't like the new one, that sort of thing). gatour Posted October 6, 2017 #13 Share Posted October 6, 2017 Definitely look at the third party providers Host Clearea provided. They do offer "cancel for any reason". You will need to buy it within a couple of weeks of booking the cruise and it can be kind of pricey. I don't normally buy insurance but for special cruises like our overseas trips, which involves airfare, hotels, and the actual cruise. I do buy cancel for any reason coverage as I book those type of trips a year in advance. We still work, so work may require us to make late changes. Also, the medical coverage (hospital in a foreign country/medical evac back to the states) comes into my thinking process.
payitforward Posted October 6, 2017 #14 Share Posted October 6, 2017 Another thing to consider is whether or not the non-refundable deposit fares save you enough to "cover" a loss. For example, the deposit is $250 per person. Of that, $100 remains completely non-refundable, but $150 can be applied as a future cruise credit on another cruise. So, if you're planning a future cruise, you've only lost $200.00. Does the non-refundable fare save more than that? If so, it could be worth losing. How many is "several"? If 8 or more, call a travel agent or Royal Caribbean's Group Department. They have different deposits and other benefits depending on group size
payitforward Posted October 6, 2017 #16 Share Posted October 6, 2017 She said "sending" not "taking." No great deals for that I'm afraid. ;)
geomancer Posted October 6, 2017 #17 Share Posted October 6, 2017 The most I've seen from "cancel for any reason" coverage is 75%. So if a couple has $500 in deposits and decide to change their mind, they'll only get $375 back (loosing $125 plus the cost of the policy). There might be policies that cover 100% (you'd have to check out the links provided) but I'd imagine they are *really* expensive policies.
