waltd Posted November 19, 2017 #1 Share Posted November 19, 2017 Does anyone know the driving time from the ship in Whittier Alaska to the airport in Anchorage? What time should I book a flight out of Anchorage for Los Angeles. Looks like the ship arrives in Whittier around 5 am but not sure what time the first Princess Shuttles actually leave. Thanks

The tunnel is alternating traffic. If a train needs the tunnel, it will take precedent to vehicles.
CruiserBruce Posted November 20, 2017 #3 Share Posted November 20, 2017 You could do a Google Map estimate. Usually pretty accurate, but add time for it being a bus, loading, etc.
Budget Queen Posted November 20, 2017 #4 Share Posted November 20, 2017 The drive is 1 hour 15 minutes- tunnel is open on the hour to 15 minutes after. from Whittier. You need a 2 hour window at the Anchorage Airport- at least, especially on cruise ship unload days.
rocklinmom Posted November 20, 2017 #5 Share Posted November 20, 2017 For a 5am Whittier docking time, Princess recommends booking a flight out no earlier than 1:30pm. As mentioned it looks to be about an hour and a half drive to the airport, but probably more like 2 hours. I have been looking at the same thing for our cruise that will dock at Whittier at midnight. Those guidelines are the same (they recommend a flight no earlier than 1pm). Also, if you are interested, they offer post-cruise transfer excursions that take you sightseeing on the way to the airport. For those you need a later flight (no earlier than 4pm range). Kamloops50 Posted November 20, 2017 #6 Share Posted November 20, 2017 When we were on this cruise. Disembarkation didn’t officially start until 8am. Private transfers were usually starting at 7am.

They started disembarking cruise tours at 6 on my cruises.
Kamloops50 Posted November 20, 2017 #8 Share Posted November 20, 2017 I wasn’t up yet at 6am. For us it was a turn around day. Sent from my iPad using Forums
waltd Posted November 20, 2017 Author #9 Share Posted November 20, 2017 Thanks everyone. So it looks like a safe bet that I should look at air flights leaving after 2 pm. Hopefully there will be no delays with the weather.
mapleleaves Posted November 20, 2017 #10 Share Posted November 20, 2017 There are transfer options other than Princess. ACT has been well reviewed on this forum. Leaves Whittier at 8:45am, arriving to the airport at 10:30 . And economical. https://alaskacruisetransfer.com The Park Connection Bus has service on cruiseship days only, but doesnt leave whittier until 9:45am. www.alaskacoach.com Another option is Avis rental car, but if the office doesnt open until 8am, you would have to wait for the 9am tunnel opening, which would get you to the airport until 10:30. Since the car doesnt offer a time saving and is quite costly you might as well tske a transfer. (Nice option for folks taking a red eye flight tho as there is lots to see and do alo g the Turnagain Arm.)

Budget Queen Posted November 20, 2017 #12 Share Posted November 20, 2017 The tunnel opens at 6am with the ability to leave at that time, cruise tours frequently are out the 7am opening. Just because you aren't "up" doesn't mean claiming a later time. Always- disembarking starts before 8am in Whittier.

I actually have made an 8am tunnel opening with Avis, so for someone organized and able to invest some earlier time, it's possible. Certainly for many- not doable. But with details and no limitations, a possibility, if you have to get out. early.
