What itinerary? Both make a big difference on tips and tricks. Bring layers, particularly a waterproof layer!! It can be wet, especially in Ketchikan.. Book early for popular excursions. Move around on decks for Glacier Bay, Hubbard Glacier or Tracy Arm cruising dsy. Different decks and locations give different perspectives.. Take an extra memory card or two for photos... Take a picture of the Princess Patter each morning before heading out to keep your photos organized by day/date/location... Enjoy!
EastBay Cruisers Posted January 25, 2018 #6 Share Posted January 25, 2018 As newbies to cruising, we went to Alaska last September and had a wonderful time ! It is really a fabulous journey. Tip - The gift shop on your ship will sell be beautiful, full-color travel guide to Alaska, written by Rachel Cartwright, one of the Princess naturalists. It costs about $18.00, but it is worth every penny for the details it gives about your voyage and all your ports of call. Easy to read, and all the photos are gorgeous. Your trip will be more meaningful as you learn about the geography and wildlife surrounding you. Have fun ! :)

There is TONS of information on this website. There are reviews by members and by staff from Cruise Critic. Use the search option with keywords such as: Alaska First recommendation is to bring layers of clothing. We went in August a few years ago and it was from warm temperature to cold. JF - retired RRT Posted January 25, 2018 #8 Share Posted January 25, 2018 A tip for ANY cruise to anywhere: put everything you think you need on a spare bed or the floor...then put 1/2 of it away.;) You really don't need all that stuff. No one will be checking to see if you wore the same shirt and pants twice. You don't need to wash them, unless you spilled supper on them. And a couple of pairs of shoes is plenty:eek:, just make sure they're comfortable. Do a Google search on what to pack for a cruise.:)
voljeep Posted January 25, 2018 #9 Share Posted January 25, 2018 Be sure to pack and dress in layers for differing weather conditions
Qstrom Posted January 25, 2018 #10 Share Posted January 25, 2018 Ponchos or windbreaker type light water proof jackets with hoods will serve you better in rain than an umbrella. If your going to be in Ketchican it rains 15' of rain per year, count on it. In May it's liable to be cooler than in the end of the Alaska cruise season like September, but you still may get some pool weather so plan on clothes for warm temps as well. Be aware all of the Alaska excursions are expensive, just budget for them if you want to do it. We took a helicopter glacier flight/landing as a bucket list item. Don't get home and regret not doing something.
