luvscruising2007 Posted February 10, 2018 #1 Share Posted February 10, 2018 I suffer from Sciatica, mostly when standing in one place for too long or walking tours when I must walk slowly. I can walk a mile at my pace with no problem. Looking for a sandal that would ease this pain in these conditions. Any suggestions are welcome. The only relief I get is from laying on my back and pulling my knees up to my head. This stretches out the nerve and muscle. That and Tylenol. Thanks. Alaskanb Posted February 10, 2018 #2 Share Posted February 10, 2018 Have you ever tried shoes with a negative heel --heel lower than toe? Wonder if those would help?
Hoyaheel Posted February 11, 2018 #3 Share Posted February 11, 2018 Good luck! I have never had sciatica, but I have occasional flare-ups of plantar fasciitis (usually in the summer). When it's at its worst, I can only wear birkenstocks (which I've wornd for years and adore) and one pair of really old merrell sneakers ;-) I do have some Vionics (Which have the negative heel) and those are ok for general wear and when the PF isn't at its worst. My favorite general pair of travel sandals is an old style of dansko - LOTS of support, and it's laced so I can go tighter or looser if I have any swelling.... mef_57 Posted February 11, 2018 #8 Share Posted February 11, 2018 After Plantar Fascitis, I need orthotics and most of my shoes are Finn Comforts. Cost a fortune, but last a long time and some designs allow for sole replacement (the ones where actual stitches are visible where sole meets shoe). I have a sandal with a closed heel that I wear everywhere. It is not a delicate sandal, but I am surprised how many questions and positive comments I get about then. If your specialist says negative heel, then these are not for you. I have found that the best shoes for my feet are the ones recommended by my orthotics maker or shoe stores specializing in problem feet. They are pros at what fits and should work for your case. Pronation, supination, excess weight...all need to be taken into consideration. I know they are expensive, and require trying on in person, but give more satisfying results. sunpsyche Posted February 18, 2018 #10 Share Posted February 18, 2018 As a former sky high shoe lover with a bad back and foot problems, these are my favs...Vionic, Naot, and Birkenstock. The first two being more stylish, and the Birkies so casual. I still wish I could wear the stilettos, however biology is destiny. Sigh...
GrammieK Posted February 18, 2018 #11 Share Posted February 18, 2018 Sun psyche, you mentioned Vionics as a favorite. They are mine, too, out of necessity! Have you seen the new summer line? They may not be stilettos, but they have some very pretty high wedges and sandals. Can't wait for my shipment! K

islandgirlejfan Posted February 25, 2018 #13 Share Posted February 25, 2018 I have sciatica.....the last bout I had lasted about a year and a half. I discovered yoga helps it (and knee pain!), so I do use that now to relieve it when I feel it coming on. There is really nothing higher than an 1 and a half for me now. I find Easy Spirits have really are the best for me.....I bought Vionics at Bealls on our last cruise and we will see how I do in them when I try them this summer.
