jztwinzmom Posted March 1, 2018 #1 Share Posted March 1, 2018 Does anyone know if the waterslides are open while we're in port in Orlando, Florida? We're not going to any of the (seriously overpriced) Amusement Parks and the kids (and I) are anxious to see what the boat is like when in port and everyone else is gone:D! Clarea Posted March 1, 2018 #2 Share Posted March 1, 2018 Yes, most all of the ship attractions are open when in port.

CruisingNole Posted March 3, 2018 #5 Share Posted March 3, 2018 Orlando isn't a "port"...it's where most folks fly into...your port is Port Canaveral. It always cracks me up when I hear Orlando referred to as a port. We're kind of missing that crucial piece that a port must have...an ocean. Rare island lady Posted March 3, 2018 #6 Share Posted March 3, 2018 Always annoying to me when Port Canaveral is referred to as "Orlando's Port Canaveral". Huh???:o :oOrlando does not own Port Canaveral, is 45 miles inland, (no where near the ocean), and is not even in the same county!! :(

Other than locals and seasoned cruisers, the rest of the country would have no idea what/where Port Canaveral is without the Orlando reference. Especially considering it has only become a popular port recently. 15 years ago there were very few ships that stopped there. I remember when I was a kid, there was a casino boat that sailed from there, and maybe one small Carnival ship.

They are completely clueless where the ocean meets the shoreline. I vote we call the port of Cape Liberty "New York City's Cape Liberty" and the port of Galveston "Houston's Galveston". :'):')

Rare island lady Posted March 4, 2018 #10 Share Posted March 4, 2018 Thanks for the quick geography lesson - I'll try not to sound like such a ******g idiot next time! Sorry about that. I was actually referring to RCI themselves confusing pax by calling Port Canaveral "Orlando's Port Canaveral" ...that is what irritates me. I wish RCI would stop listing it that way. I never meant to put that on you...and I am very sorry. My bad.
jztwinzmom Posted March 4, 2018 Author #11 Share Posted March 4, 2018 Island Lady yours was one of the nicer posts - and I agree with you. I thought I was using RC's lingo but I see that it's really "Orlando (Port Canaveral)"

I thought I was using RC's lingo but I see that it's really "Orlando (Port Canaveral)" Thank you..but I still feel really bad to have upset you, and did not want you to get a negative vibe on these forums. We are here to help where we can. That is what most of us are here for. My beef was with RCI causing obvious confusion to passengers by calling our port Orlando. If you have any other questions...please feel free to ask.
Saab4444 Posted March 4, 2018 #13 Share Posted March 4, 2018 The same applies to Rome (Civitaveccia), Paris (Le Havre), Berlin (Warnemünde), Glasgow (Grenock) or London (Southampton). All of us have these little electronic boxes that can access just about anything now. ;) The poor OP is not the first one to be totally confused by RCI calling Port Canaveral "Orlando". :o
Merion_Mom Posted March 4, 2018 #15 Share Posted March 4, 2018 As Saab pointed out, the actual port and the nearest city/town/attraction are often linked. It's not to help the locals. It's to help the visitors.

It's to help the visitors. Wouldn't it help to just list a link for nearest airports to the named port? When I book a land based vacation, their website usually gives me directions to the nearest airport. If all else fails, gosh...I guess I could just google the nearest airport to the city or port? ;) OP was confused by RCI calling the port Orlando, and is not the only one. It would be nice to know that the port is 45 miles away, or 200 miles away and not thinking they will step off the plane and be there?

I'm a resident so I have no idea what others around the country know about Florida but I feel like Orlando is pretty well-known to be in Central Florida and is certainly not on the coast, hence no "Orlando beach." Not trying to be rude, but I don't think anyone goes to Disney World and expects a beach within eyesight. Where there's a port, there must be an ocean. Well, since she said they were staying on the ship while in port, I don't think she is looking for a beach. Or anything else.
Saab4444 Posted March 4, 2018 #19 Share Posted March 4, 2018 Main reason is to point out the key destination that 90% of guests will visit. This helps selling the cruise. Can you imagine an itinerary saying just e.g. Le Havre, Warnemuende and Nynashamn instead of Paris, Berlin and Stockholm? Would someone without detailed geographical knowledge look at it and book it? We had to learn a lot of Geography in school including e.g. all countries, capitals, big rivers and ports around the world but this has changed. Rare island lady Posted March 5, 2018 #21 Share Posted March 5, 2018 Why does RCI call Cape Liberty....Cape Liberty? Why not "New York City" or "Newark"??? That cruise port was non-exist just a few short years ago before they put in the new terminal. Port Canaveral has been a cruise port for over 30 years. Please RCI...call the port as it's name, like you do with Cape Liberty. It's PORT CANAVERAL!!

Do you think our education system prepared everyone to understand this country's geography, (much less anywhere else) or even how to read a map?
