Royal Caribbean Fights Back!

The other night I was watching the very ending of one of those cop shows--CSI or one like it (sorry, I wasn't sure which one it was, I don't normally watch them much.) When it was over they did the "next week on...." and I turned away to look at something on my computer. But my husband was watching and said, "Hey, that guy just fell off the balcony of a cruise ship!" Did anyone else catch this? So is CSI (or whatever it was) pulling a page from the George Smith disappearance for one of their shows? If so, that will be interesting to watch. Being Hollywood though, I'm sure they'll come up with their own wild explanation for it. I wonder if this will just give the Smith family something else to be mad about. Maybe they'll start focusing on the tv station instead of RCCL!;)

the alcohol consumed was not only smuggled onboard, but is illegal in the US due to its strong mind altering properties.

A little research here:

Absinthe

A vintage Pernod Fils absinthe advertisement

Absinthe is a distilled, highly-alcoholic, anise-flavored spirit, derived from herbs including the flowers and leaves of the medicinal plant Artemisia absinthium, also called wormwood. Sometimes incorrectly called a liqueur, absinthe does not contain added sugar and is a liquor or spirit. [1]

Nicknamed la Fée Verte ("The Green Fairy"), absinthe's flavor is similar to other anise-flavored liqueurs, with a light bitterness and more complex flavor imparted by other herbs. Absinthe's color is traditionally clear, pale green or emerald green. Because of its natural bitterness, absintheurs typically add three to five parts ice cold water to a dose of absinthe, which causes the drink to turn cloudy (called "louching").

Absinthe had its start in Switzerland as an elixir, but is more well-known for its popularity in late 19th and 20th century France, particularly among Parisian artists and writers, whose romantic associations with the drink still linger in popular culture. In its heyday, the most popular brand of absinthe worldwide was Pernod Fils. At the height of its popularity, absinthe was portrayed as a dangerously addictive, psychoactive drug, the chemical thujone was blamed for most of its deleterious effects. By 1915 it was banned in a number of European countries and the United States. Modern evidence shows it to be as safe as ordinary alcohol. A modern-day absinthe revival began in the 1990s, as countries in the European Union began to reauthorize its manufacture and sale.

Okay, I just found another thread about it and it turns out my husband wasn't hallucinating. It's CSI:Miami and it will be airing on May 1st. Called "Open Waters" and is about a honeymooning couple on a cruise ship where the husband goes overboard. Gee, how'd they come up with THAT idea??

They found the wife passed out near the crew elevator. A crew member took her (by wheelchair) back to the cabin. She was hammered from the illegal alcohol (and who was serving this stuff, anyway? RCCL?). So I can see why she didn't see the blood because it was on a towel, and in a couple of other locations. As for the employee who brought her back...there was blood, but he didn't see it. The curtain was closed, and the largest blood deposit was on the handrail and the lifeboat that he hit, before he hit the water.

I don't know what happened, but I will say again, I am not happy with the way RCCL handled this. And as for the illegal booze, who served it? The ship? And this man was so hammered as was his wife. What about being responsible (yes, I know they shouldn't have had that much, but WHY keep serving them? I suppose to get their bill higer??)? They should have not served him or her after a certain point. Same as at a bar.

I know I am beating a dead horse here...so I'll mosey on. :)

The ship did not serve the illegal booze. It was smuggled aboard and the Smiths and the Russians drank it. This liquor is banned in the US.

but it is the final episode of this season for CSI Miami titled OPEN WATER on 5/1/06.

Honeymooning Couple has fight & husband goes over. Caine & the bunch is there to figure it out when it returns to Miami. Too bad they are not all on the cruise when it did happen!

Hey, maybe they'll be able to do a "throw the dummy overboard" test!

I was visiting my local CBS station, as I love the weatherman, and he is giving me the weather for our Scandanavia/Baltic cruise 5/14-5/26. Want to pack good for the weather that can be chilly as well as warm, but I want to good idea. Finland was frozen for Freedom's launch & I don't want that!

So I went into the Program Mgr's office & asked him about 5.1 CSI Miami & he gave me this:

94. Open Water

First aired: 5/1/2006

Writer: Marc Dube, Ildy Modrovich

Director: Scott Lautanen

Guest star: Rex Linn (Detective Frank Tripp), Eva LaRue (Natalia Boa Vista), Boti Ann Bliss (Valera) , Richard Maczura (Male Passenger), Katherine Leigey (Rebecca McLaine), Joel Polis (Agent Robert Wynn), Valarie Pettiford (Dr. Laura Whitford), James Remar (Captain Quentin Taylor), Chris Beetem (Keith Murray), Matt Norklum (Mike Harris), Armando Valdez-Kennedy (Aaron Peters), Sherilyn Fenn (Gwen Creighton), Joel West (Officer Aaron Jessop), Keith Barry (Barry Reece), Leslie Odom Jr. (Joseph Kayle), Alana De La Garza (Marisol Delko)

Global rating:

A cruise ship that is docked in Miami is the scene for a double murder. The team investigates the long list of potential suspects but soon find that the list is dramatically decreased when the CSI’s find a large amount of money is missing from the victim’s stateroom. Horatio and Marisol’s relationship evolves.

We do not know that he was sitting on the railings.

No one has proven it either way. Your point?

My concern is for my safety.

Well then you have more sense than the Smiths did. They obviously had NO concern for their own safety.

I am not happy with RCCL at this point.

Why? Because someone allegedly died on their ship? Don't be happy with Carnival, Holland America, Princess, Celebrity, Costa, etc.... Bigger tragedies have happened then this.

I suppose it's probably pointless to argue this his, it's much like saying you had a bad time on your cruise (over on the Carnival board). :)

Ummmmmm... I don't "get" that comparison.

My mistake for wandering over here. I wish all you the best on this line, and I do hope the Smith's find out what happened to their son.

No, stop by anytime. BTW, try reading the thread a more closely. Really enjoyed your assumptions.

I do not believe it was an accident. I believe someone killed Mr. Smith. Pretty simple, and of course...this is just my opinion.

No problem with you stating opinions. Just don't mistake facts.

I love CSI Miami, but Monday night's show was kinda comical. Perhaps the next time they want to do a case involving cruising they should talk to someone who has actually been on one.

First, the murder takes place at 6 in the morning on the day the ship returns to Miami and is three miles from docking. I have NEVER seen that many bikini-clad babes on any of the cruise ships I've been on, and at 6 a.m. ... on the morning of debarkation? Obviousy these young ladies are going to wear those bikinis off the ship in two hours since their luggage was collected the night before.

Second, that was the scruffiest captain I've ever seen. Of course, it made perfect sense being that he murdered one of his passengers on this particular cruise (No, not the newlywed ... the stepdaughter was the guilty party there).

Third, once again the captain was an idiot. The newlywed ended up as shark bait because the cruise ship had illegally dumped garbage into the ocean ... heading into port! Wouldn't you do that while further out to sea, in the middle of the night. So there were two murders on one ship ... a direct result of Captain Crud's actions.

I could go on and on ... grown ship's officer sleeping with underage murdering stepdaughter ... ship's magician stealing $70,000 out of passenger's safe, etc. ... but you get my point.

Now, back to the bikini-clad babes ...

That was our first thought about this TV ship! My husband wanted to know what ship because he had never seen anything like those bikini clad women on any of our cruises. :D

grown ship's officer sleeping with underage murdering stepdaughter
Unfortunately, this does go on occasionally.

What I couldn't get over or understand was the garbage area on the ship. Do they really look like that? Garbage spread out all over the deck?

Didn't they even throw in a dose of bird flu for good measure? I didn't see the whole thing, but was watching it when they were in the infirmary looking at some lady's chart. You know, my husband doesn't like to cruise, but maybe he'll change his mind after seeing those bikini girls on CSI!;)

Here is what gets me about this lady, (From her own website)

We are dedicated to finding out the truth about what happened to George and seeing that justice is served. To date, the cruise line has not provided us with the passenger and crew manifest, witness statements taken by the cruise line and its lawyers, video tapes, and many other items and other information, despite our many requests.

Her gripe is that the cruise line hasn't provided them (INDIVIDUALS) with their requests for evidence.

First, why does she and her investigators need the Passenger/Crew Manifest. No doubt the FBI could get this by issuing a subpeona.

As far as other evidence, Witness Statements, Video Tapes, and other items and information, why wouldn't the FBI have procured them by now. I mean it is conducting the 'official' investigation into what happened.

Finally, again, the whole situation is suspect. The fact that on one night the husband didn't return to the cabin is sketchy...

That was the worst CSI Miami to date. From what I was told the inner shots were QM2, but the killer daughter claims she was rock climbing & the waves made it difficult. So that is reference to RCCL. But all outer shots were Carnival & one ship with black funnels & black lower sides. There was a quick shot of RCCL but no in reference to the cruise, just in the rear of a shot.

I agree about morning of disembarkation all the bikini babes out for sun. Guess they don't plan to get off til noon, so they are chair hogs getting their favorite.

But Caruso had a record with 70% of the show with no sunglasses on, but they were in his hand. And next week his wedding? Talk about a fast nuptial, as she asked him not him her..........

But Sunday night gave us a TIVO SURPRISE! Law & Order that was taped & we were eating breakfast & watched it. WOW! I know its ratings time but the cruise ship deaths is getting a bit crazy over 2 nights. TIVO is ready for CSI Miami at 10PM EDT. & I could have passed out with Law & Order. A ritzy guy who was a school counselor is bumped off his balcony, leaving a blood droplet on the ledge & the camera shot showed no lifeboats below their balcony. He lost $500,000 to a 20 year old California gambler who was coptered from an AC casino where he won $2 mil, to the ship to beat this guy. Turns out is uncle did the arranging & killed the ritzy guy by giving him a patch that drugged him & then dumped him off his balcony as they were coming into port, so his body would be found & his sister who was married to the guy would get the $2 mil with suicide rider. Everyone on the ship said it was a suicide, as the Captain wrote on his accident report. 2 other guys that no one knew were the last ones seen "walking the drunk guy back to his stateroom & tucking him into be like a baby" as they told Police. Was this weird or what????

I got the impression that this was a Gambling ship... but now you mention the balcony thats right... That doesn't make sense...

for those who think all the shots & stories are Miami, Las Vegas or NYC..... they are filmed in LA. Just like the TV Show "Las Vegas" that is a soundstage done into a casino & Penn & Teller had to fly from LV to LA to tape their segment of the show. They are in each city a few times a year to shoot this year's shots with new buildings shown, etc. Maybe a few stories with a walk into a famous place. But Las Vegas casinos do not want CSI in them, just Golden Nugget with new owners so they want the PR.

QM in CA was used for interior work, the shots of the pier are on reel to use whenver needed. Here in Cleveland, Hollywood is shooting "Spiderman 3" & I was an extra 4 times, so I stand a chance of being in it! I made it in Casino & Con Air in Las Vegas taped at 2AM, but here the main street closed for 3 weeks so they could do chase scenes, fires, blowing stuff up, and me running out screaming.............

All the Law and Order shows are indeed shot here in NYC, as well as scenes for CSI. They've tried to shoot scenes depicted as New York City, but we New Yorkers know they're fake!!!!!!

Two things -

the new Vanity Fair arrived today and yours truly's letter to the editor was published responding to their article. At least I got to get in a few brief points!

Second - many network shows shoot exteriors in various locations and interiors in LA. Been in the business over 20 years - we still love to laugh at the errors. L&O is one of the few shows "based" in NYC. We're still mourning the loss of the new "Dallas" movie not shooting here since the series shot here for their entire run (with interiors in LA).

Law and Order episodes may be filmed in Manhattan but they frequently show the New York City Crime/Forensic Lab as being at One Police Plaza, and it has never been at that location.
