FishinChris Posted August 10, 2018 #1 Share Posted August 10, 2018 "Traveling to the land of ice and snow, to the midnight sun where the hot springs flow." Well more like trying to escape the miserable summer heat at home where the AC is the only cool thing that blows. untitled shoot-001.jpg Little did we know when planning this trip that we would just be exchanging our California hot weather for theirs. We originally had booked the 14 day "Land of the Midnight Sun" cruise in June but switched it to a 7 day Fjord cruise in July so that we could spend more time in England. We had a great time and have the photos to prove it. Hopefully you enjoy them as much as we do. Untitled With all the important stuff packed we were ready to go. I still get lost at the airport, we eventually made to Terminal 1 at SFO. untitled shoot-003-Edit.jpg British Airways now is a participant in TSA Precheck so we breezed through security which gave us all kind of time to get creative with our photography. FishinChris Posted August 10, 2018 Author #2 Share Posted August 10, 2018 Safety First! We were all tucked into our economy seats in the back of the 747. London Norway 2018-794.jpg 8624 km to go! San Francisco to London in about 10 1/2 hours. London Norway 2018-086.jpg Somewhere over the UK. London Norway 2018-246.jpg If your riding an escalator then you're probably going the right way. London Norway 2018-028-Edit.jpg We made it through Customs fast enough that we beat our luggage by 15 minutes. We had made a reservation with Airports Transfer for a car to our Hotel. https://www.airportstransfer.com/ Our driver contacted us while we were in customs letting us know he was there. 45 GBP for the service, highly recommend. FishinChris Posted August 10, 2018 Author #4 Share Posted August 10, 2018 We stayed at the Chesterfield Mayfair, https://www.chesterfieldmayfair.com The hotel is located on a quiet street in Mayfair. It is close to Shapard's Market and Green Park. London Norway 2018-227.jpg The room was spacious but more importantly the room was cold, no problem with the air conditioning at the Chesterfield. They kept the thermostat around 18 degrees Celsius or 64 degrees F. London Norway 2018-221.jpg Our view of the impressive AC units and the nearby rooftops. London Norway 2018-216.jpg The Chesterfield definitely had the best old world decor with the fabric covered walls. FishinChris Posted August 10, 2018 Author #5 Share Posted August 10, 2018 My wife had booked the afternoon tea at the hotel, it was the first thing we did after we checked in. London Norway 2018-641-Edit.jpg The theme for their afternoon tea is sweet shop. London Norway 2018-243-Edit.jpg Now that we were all full of sweets, it was time to hit the streets. FishinChris Posted August 10, 2018 Author #7 Share Posted August 10, 2018 The streets of London are very entertaining to me and a great place to practice street photography. Before we left I had already planned to visit a hat shop but not any ordinary hat shop. https://www.lockhatters.co.uk/ After finding the perfect hat, it was time to check out with one fine Panama hat. FishinChris Posted August 10, 2018 Author #13 Share Posted August 10, 2018 My wife wanted to go to Harrods, so after locking up my wallet we went. We did check out the Egyptian Escalator. https://londonist.com/london/videos/egyptian-escalator-harrods
FishinChris Posted August 10, 2018 Author #14 Share Posted August 10, 2018 After riding the escalator up and down we then made our way to their famous food court. That was enough Harrods for me.
FishinChris Posted August 10, 2018 Author #15 Share Posted August 10, 2018 The London Mastaba http://christojeanneclaude.net/projects/the-london-mastaba I shot both of these photos with a 10 stop ND filter on a small travel tripod. This concludes day 1 in London. The next day we left for Portsmouth to go to the Historic Dockyard. Sheperd Market on the way to the Green Park tube station. FishinChris Posted August 10, 2018 Author #17 Share Posted August 10, 2018 We traveled on a mostly empty First Class car. [ https://www.historicdockyard.co.uk/ We spent half a day here but could have easily spent much more time. The main reason for wanting to visit the Dockyard was to step upon the HMS Victory. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Victory

FishinChris Posted August 10, 2018 Author #21 Share Posted August 10, 2018 After Lord Nelson was shot he was brought down to the orlap and passed over at this very spot. I am still editing through over 6000 photos that I took on this trip, I will get through them quickly. I promise not to post all 6000 of them. FishinChris Posted August 10, 2018 Author #24 Share Posted August 10, 2018 After our time on the HMS Victory we made our way to the Mary Rose. https://maryrose.org/ There is a separate admission to enter this exhibit. Henry the VIII, a real ladies man? It was an awesome sight seeing the preserved decks and artifacts of the Mary Rose.
FishinChris Posted August 10, 2018 Author #25 Share Posted August 10, 2018 Next we made our way over to the National Museum of the Royal Navy and viewed the ships figure heads on the 2nd floor. Not once did we ever feel unsafe or threatened while in the UK.
