Kiwi Kruzer Posted March 23, 2019 #2 Share Posted March 23, 2019 Just reading about it . Everyone off by helicopter will be a slow and arduous job. Viking Sky is a relatively new ship I think. Trust all goes well . Cruise ship in strife off Norway, 1300 evacuations under wayhttps://www.nzherald.co.nz/travel/news/article.cfm?c_id=7&objectid=12215666 Norway cruise ship evacuated after engine problemshttps://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-47680055

Kiwi Kruzer Posted March 23, 2019 #6 Share Posted March 23, 2019 (edited) There is an active thread running on the CC Viking board https://boards.cruisecritic.com/topic/2647818-viking-sky-position-adrift-off-norway-coast-and-evacuating-passengers-crew/ Edited March 23, 2019 by Kiwi Kruzer

Rare OzKiwiJJ Posted March 23, 2019 #8 Share Posted March 23, 2019 That ship was only launched in 2017. It's a bit surprising that she would have engine problems so soon. And apparently that coast is one of the most dangerous around Norway. I hope they manage to get all the passengers and crew off safely.

SeaDog-46 Posted March 24, 2019 #11 Share Posted March 24, 2019 The ship actually had a blackout which stopped everything. Captain put out a mayday as they were in a storm on a lee shore. Dropped the anchores & they held. Rescue of injured by helicopter. She is now underway making 2-3 knots with escort of 2 tugs & 2 rig tenders. SeaDog-46 Posted March 24, 2019 #16 Share Posted March 24, 2019 2 large offshore tug / supply / rescue vessels in attendance. Ocean Reponse 4183 gt Normand Range 7480 gt rushing to scene at 17 knots With these 2 large tugs used to tow oil rigs they will no doubt try to get Sky Viking into port in daylight. Assisted by harbour tug Vivax 485 gt.
Kiwi Kruzer Posted March 24, 2019 #17 Share Posted March 24, 2019 Just wondering............... Do we have many Large ocean going tugs down this way?
Rare MicCanberra Posted March 24, 2019 Author #18 Share Posted March 24, 2019 Looking at the hull shape of the first tug, it looks like an icebreaker as well.
SeaDog-46 Posted March 24, 2019 #19 Share Posted March 24, 2019 No Mic - bulbous bow. David - Australia has 1 emergency tug in the GBR area. Coral Knight chartered by AMSA at 1945 gt - not much in size compared to the 2 standing by Viking Sky at 4183 gt & 7480 gt. Would be little help with a large loaded collier or tanker. Other than Coral Knight they rely on harbour tugs & others passing through area - or call one in from Singapore.

The_Big_M Posted March 24, 2019 #23 Share Posted March 24, 2019 There are other Australian vessels supporting rigs that could do other support work off west and north coasts e.g. MMA Plover.
Rare MMDown Under Posted March 24, 2019 #24 Share Posted March 24, 2019 Good news to see that the ship is now safely in port in Norway. Details are on the Viking thread. News of the evacuation of passengers and storm damage is being shown on ABC Breakfast News this morning. Having experienced furniture sliding from one side of a ship to the other and back as the ship rolled, as well as having to hold on to a rope to cross the lift wells, on my first overseas cruise (from NY to Rotterdam across the Atlantic) I know how terrifying this experience is. However, my experience was minor compared to what the passengers on the Viking Sky experienced.
