groovechick Posted April 17, 2019 #2 Share Posted April 17, 2019 With regard to the funicular in Bergen, if you are docked at the container port, P&O run a shuttle that drops you in a central square in Bergen. From there it's a 10-minute stroll to the fish market, the Bryggen old quarter and the funicular. Check if there are lots of ships in port on that day because if so there will be big queues. I think you can possibly buy tickets in advance online. Can't help re the ice bar.
Rare Eglesbrech Posted April 17, 2019 #3 Share Posted April 17, 2019 Yes. Both are in the middle of Bergen. The ice bar is across the water from the Bryggen (the old coloured houses). You can walk round by the fish market if your ship docks in the near port. You probably need to pre book as some ships take tours to ice bars and can book it up for the whole day, we had that issue in Oslo. The funicular is also right in the middle of the city, diagonally across the road from the fish market. It gets busy so I would suggest going up and back down early in the day and the ice bar PM if you have time to do both. If you are at the berth that requires a shuttle you are still near to both from the drop off point. The Bryggen museum is also worth a visit if you like history, it makes wandering round the old houses more interesting once you know what the features are for. Its a lovely place to DIY, enjoy. Smudgie2408 Posted April 17, 2019 #4 Share Posted April 17, 2019 Also sailing the fjords in June and struggled to find an excursion that gave us the freedom to move about. We went with the "Bergen on your own" it gives you skip the line tickets to the funicular, a free sandwich, and some suggested walking routes round the city. On the Bergen on your own tour it says the Funicular is wheelchair accessible, but on other places says you have to climb steps. Anyone know if you can go up with a wheelchair ? My SIL can walk very short distances but struggles with steps Thanks
the english lady Posted April 17, 2019 #6 Share Posted April 17, 2019 Isnt there steps at the very base of the funnicular?? , you walk up to get on the train. I have a vague memory of 4/5 steps. At the tops the area is tiered in places so you can get a good view from where ever you are stood. Personally i would wait and see the weather on the day. If its cloudy and wet you will not see anything if you go up in it. if its sunny its a wow. If it is sunny and you are a shuttle ride away have early breakfast, get off asap and head straight there. when we last did it we were able to walk to it. went up, came back down about an hour later and the queue was huge. https://www.visitnorway.com/places-to-go/fjord-norway/bergen/listings-bergen/fløibanen-funicular/2559/ the website and it does state it is wheelchair accessable. Cathygh Posted April 17, 2019 #8 Share Posted April 17, 2019 Hi There are arrows on the pavements to direct you to the funicular. The ice bar is walkable and great fun. The P&O map was rubbish but google maps got us there.
DamianG Posted April 17, 2019 #9 Share Posted April 17, 2019 (edited) Our DIY day in Bergen last time we were there saw us buy a takeaway seafood salad in the market (not cheap but fresh & delicious) before we got on the funicular. We then enjoyed our picnic lunch at the top before strolling back down on one of the walking routes. It was a simple enough plan & an enjoyable & memorable day.
