False advertising

We have been looking at a Nautical cruise in May 2021 that goes from Singapore to Rome.  Oceania put out an ad that stated that you could upgrade to premium economy for $199 each way.  In no part of their ad did they state that it applied only to the flight from Rome back, and that it did not apply to the flight from home to Singapore.  Very poor advertising on their part.

Unfortunately, this is one of those cases of reading the fine print.   On the offer, there is an asterisk, and when you go read the terms and conditions of the offer, it states:  (only Europe embark and disembark)

PREMIUM ECONOMY AIR UPGRADE*
Air Upgrade, if applicable, is a Premium Economy Air Upgrade only available when air is purchased through Oceania Cruises. It applies to intercontinental flights only and is priced per person, each way, on select voyages from select gateways, open to all categories for Europe embark and disembark ports only and based on availability. Not all amenities will be available on all carriers.

Unfortunately,  Oceania is getting really good at it.  You need to get out your magnifying glass and fine-tooth comb, when dealing with them.  On our last onboard reservation, it took us two days to figure out why our math and their math was not the same when adding up our "savings".

Hopefully, this can change in the coming few years. Until recently the US flag carriers did not offer true Premium Economy service to anywhere. There were several options of European carriers that did and Oceania contracted with them for PE seats.

In the big big scheme of things, Oceania doesn’t run very many cruises to the Far East in general or any particular country in particular. Therefore, negotiating bulk rates tickets with any of the foreign carriers, especially for the limited number of available PE seats would be difficult .

Hopefully, as the major US flag carriers slowly choose to enter the 21st Century and to offer PE on their Asian runs, Oceania will be able to offer that service to their cruisers. We are not yet there!

When that day comes, the upgrade to PE will be more on the Asian flights. Those flights are typically 12-17 hour flights whereas European flights are 6-9 hrs in most cases.
