No Upgrade Question/Upells

We are booked on the Maasdam 14 night Alaska cruise starting May 18, 2020.  We have inside cabin 400 and presently have our reservation marked as "no upgrade."  Looking at the HAL board I have seen quite a few posts where cruisers have been offered "upsell" offers.  While I know there are no guarantees that we might be offered an "upsell,"  I was wondering if we should remove the "no upgrade" notation and take our chances that something might happen.  We are not familiar with the Maasdam so not sure if our present cabin choice is a very good one and we should just keep it.  Any advice from people who have dealt with the "upsell" situation would be appreciated.  Thank you.

If the upsell fairy chooses to visit, it doesn’t matter if you have “no upgrade” marked or not.

Upsells are totally different than upgrades since $$$ are involved 😉

I don’t think your L cabin is one of the larger insides (I hope those familiar will correct me if I am wrong).  Assuming I am correct, I’d be tempted to remove the “no upgrade”.

Agree with Kazu to remove the “no upgrade”.  Given that you are so far out I would also check regularly for price drops then call your PCC or TA to refare you.  You can refare as many times as you like before final payment.  The PCC will know when they’re coming and will give you a heads up.  If there is a price drop after final payment you can call and ask if their pricing specialist can do anything for you.  You may end up with an upgrade that way.  Enjoy your cruise!

kazu, thanks for the reply.  The first line of your post is contrary to what my TA said so I am glad that you posted.

Oh darn.  You mention you have a TA, as well as them not getting the information right.  This is where I find that the HAL PCC’s excel.  You will need to go through the TA for everything and will not be able to refare/negotiate with HAL directly.  Sorry.

As Kazu stated, you can receive upsells (paid upgrades) even if you mark your cabin do not upgrade.  I have done this MANY times.

I generally mark my reservations do not upgrade, unless I am confident that ANY cabin ranked higher than mine will be acceptable with me (and of course, DW).  Remember, HAL's ranking system likely will not be the same as yours.

Thanks Miss G for your response, I appreciate it.  Yes, I do have a TA and they have always been wonderful and given me generous OBC and have refared my cruises when requested to do so.  But, for some reason, the TA lacks the knowledge about "upsells."  At least I now know how the process works on HAL.

Oh good.  I am so happy you have a good TA.  I admit to being relieved now!

If you are looking for a large inside cabin, go with 548 or 549; 400 is a regular inside cabin on the Maasdam.

Smooth Sailing!  🙂🙂🙂

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it.  My cabin category says that my cabin is a large inside cabin.  I looked at 548 and 549 and they are large inside/sideways.  Does the sideways make it bigger?  Just curious.  Unfortunately, they are not available for our cruise.  Also, they are close to the laundry facility --- wouldn't that be a bad location due to foot traffic and noise from laundry?

Quite honestly, you likely won't hear any foot traffic outside your door.  We had a cabin directly across from the access to the elevators and figured we'd need ear plugs, but it was rare that we heard anyone going past.  Sorry 548 and 549 aren't available for you.  It isn't just that they're sideways, they are a larger cabin overall.

Smooth Sailing!  🙂🙂🙂
