Purchasing insurance question

Recommended Posts

When you estimate the cost of your trip for the purpose of purchasing insurance, do you include ALL costs, including excursions, drink and dining packages, etc? Of only the cost of air/hotels/cruise? I assume that if I had to cancel my cruise, the drink package and excursions would be refunded, even though the cruise itself may not. Is that correct? So when shopping for insurance through a popular insurance website, would I include only the NONrefundable costs?

Thanks for any help with this. I need to buy insurance for our upcoming Greece cruise on the Brilliance of the Seas. If I add the costs of excursions and drink/dining packages for 2 weeks, it ups the total cost considerably and therefore would also increase the cost of the insurance.

Insure only the prepaid nonrefundable expenses. You could exclude the port fees and taxes as well.

The price break for premiums is usually in $500 increments so I round up to give myself some wiggle room.

Sometimes the price break is at $1000 increments.  It depends on the insurance company.

I would read through the cruise insurance forum.

Oops, sorry. I didn't realize there was a forum specifically for insurance. Thanks for the tip.

And thanks to the other posters as well. I appreciate the info.

I do not insure the cost of the cruise.

It is paid for, if I miss it, I will be upset, but not hurt financially.  So I insure for either $0 or maybe $500 (sometimes that is only a couple of dollars more).

I insure mainly for those added expenses that could be a HUGE financial burden.  Medical and med evac.

My mother had an issue on a cruise.  The medevac flight from Halifax to Washington DC area was $29,000.  And the hotel costs in Halifax were over $10,000.   I could not handle an unexpected $40,000 hit.

How long did you stay in Halifax to have a $40,000 hotel bill.  If your mom was air vac to DC, did you stay in Halifax?

HOSPITAL.  Typo.

Hospital and med evac were about $40,000.

Hotel, meals, rental car, was a few hundred.  Two rooms (my Dad and I), for about 3 or 4 night.

Port agent was AWESOME.  My Dad went in the ambulance with my Mom.  I packed a couple of bags for us.  After waiting a bit for a taxi, the port agent drove me the hospital, escorted me until I was with my Dad (it took a while to find them), and then gave me his cell in case we needed any assistance.

My Dad rode the med evac home, but I had to take a commercial flight.
