My Cabin is Currently on the Royal Up Bid List

We currently have and fully paid for the Villa Suite on Liberty of the Seas for our September cruise.  We’re traveling with two other families, one of which is in another cabin.  On their reservation page online, they are being offered the ability to place a bid on our cabin.  There is only one Villa Suite on the ship.  Why does RCCL offer cabins for bid if they know they’re already sold?  Doesn’t seem very fair (or responsible) to place false hopes upon unknowing customers.

They do this all the time.  It's a backup plan for last minute cancellations.

I once won a RU for a cabin that wasn't available only a week prior to the cruise due to a last minute cancellation.

False hopes?  One should always read the terms of a contract prior to signing.

Presumably the bid up process doubles as market research; “what will people pay”

 

they must get valuable insight to how much someone (who they already know are in which price range) are willing to pay for more expensive cabin types.

It's 2/3 data collection/analytics, 1/3 for actual upgrades.

Things happen. We were 100% going on a Caribbean cruise last April. In late March my husband slipped while walking from the car to home (it was just a few steps but in any case he slipped)…and hit his head so bad he ended up in hospital for a week and was not subsequently allowed to cruise. So we cancelled our cruise just 2 weeks before departure date (insurance covered everything thankfully). 
 

You are op hopefully going on your cruise but things can come up at last minute. And because of those last minute cancellations they allow bids to all categories.
