Hobson1754 Posted August 21, 2023 #1 Share Posted August 21, 2023 We are flying into Kevlavik airport for our cruise on Saturn in 3 weeks - we are arriving the day before and have just received an email from Gray Line, advising that they can no longer do the shared transfer which was to take us to our hotel. They have changed the transfer to a coach which takes us to the bus station & then transfers us to a smaller bus, they are also changing the time to 30 minutes later. This has been booked for months and I’m not best pleased🤨, doesn’t fill me with a lot of confidence in Gray Line. Can anyone give any recommendations for an alternative they may have used in the past.
Rare FlyerTalker Posted August 21, 2023 #2 Share Posted August 21, 2023 Flybus+ https://www.re.is/tour/flybus/ With few exceptions, the buses go from KEF to the bus station, then a transfer to smaller buses that go to the various hotels and guesthouses. This makes for an efficient system where there are frequent buses from the airport, and then a fleet of small buses that finish the transfer. It also works well with the smaller streets in Reykjavik - a 50 passenger bus can't get to many hotels and especially guesthouses. Most everyone takes Flybus, including airline staff. Cancel Gray and switch to Flybus+.
CDR2001 Posted August 21, 2023 #3 Share Posted August 21, 2023 We had a great experience with FlyBus. When we arrived at the airport, we easily got our tickets at the FlyBus desk, along with a color coded ticket for our transfer to the smaller van. We spent longer at the airport than expected so we were glad that a timed reservation wasn’t needed. (lost luggage..)
Meander Ingwa Posted August 21, 2023 #4 Share Posted August 21, 2023 Totally agree with Flybus. The airport, itself, features Flybus on its website. When you book you will tell them what hotel you are going to and they will have the appropriate van assignment for you. They are the experts at getting you started on a positive Iceland experience You can usually fine how to get to and from most airports on the airports web site. This is particularly true where the use or metroploitan or train systems are useful
Eastporter Posted August 22, 2023 #5 Share Posted August 22, 2023 I have been to Iceland several times in the last few years (and actually lived there for 3 years in the 70’s, courtesy of the US Navy) and taken Flybus. It works ok going to Reykjavik, not as easily returning to the airport (you first have to get to the bus terminal). Last summer, after a Homelands cruise, we did a self guided week in Iceland with another couple. We booked a recommended taxi service (Walter Unnarsson), taxi-tours.is. He met us at baggage with a van and for the four of us, I believe the cost was about the same as the bus. Also, much more convenient. Enjoy Iceland. It is fascinating. Just expect temps in the 50’s.

Rare WanderingBrit Posted August 22, 2023 #8 Share Posted August 22, 2023 And don't be put off by the change to a "small bus", exactly the same thing happened to us on Airport Direct. It's a very smooth and stress free process; by the time you get to the "terminal" they know where you're going (because you booked the hotel transfer) and tell you which waiting mini-bus to get on - they'll load your bags for you. The mini-bus then drops you at the closest bus stop to your hotel, in our case it was just across the street. They don't seem to pay any attention to the time you booked, just scan your barcode as you board.
Rare CCWineLover Posted August 22, 2023 #9 Share Posted August 22, 2023 One more vote for Flybus. Easy, efficient, reasonable. They operate on the hub and spoke system (like many USA Airlines do), where they have the big bus go from KEF to the Central Bus Terminal and you connect to a small feeder van to whatever local hotel or location you are ending up at. Actually made it much more efficient!
DRJVH Posted August 23, 2023 #10 Share Posted August 23, 2023 We used Flybus from the airport to the bus terminal. Depending where your hotel is located, the smaller buses don’t always take you to your hotel, they stop at bus stops close to your hotel so you may still have a walk. duquephart Posted August 23, 2023 #11 Share Posted August 23, 2023 They stop in front of Hotel Natura. Would a list be useful?
Hobson1754 Posted August 23, 2023 Author #12 Share Posted August 23, 2023 I’ve now cancelled Gray Line & booked FlyBus with a stop at ‘Bus Stop 4’, which I believe is across from our Hotel - Exeter Hotel. Also saved some cash! Once again thanks to everyone for your input. This Forum is invaluable, so full of knowledge & experience. Countdown now to our Saturn cruise - 13th September 🎉🎉
