Silver Shadow

We're considering a New York to Montreal cruise for the Fall of 2025. We've been on all 3 Muse-class ships and loved them.

We're fine with the smaller size of the Silver Shadow. Have been on similar-sized ships with Regent and Seabourn. But I am concerned about the age and condition of the Silver Shadow. I am aware of the issues the ship experienced last July in Alaska.

Looking for some feedback from the community. Thanks in advance.

For those of us who aren’t aware, would you share what the issues were that the Shadow experienced in July 2023 as I thought she was over in Iceland and the UK, not Alaska.

I was on Shadow just after the two dislocated Alaska voyages. My trip was uneventful.

I think the chances for a significant "event" are about the same as on any other ship. That is: nonzero; distinctly greater than on an airplane; and if it happens distinctly less impactful than on an airplane.

Unfortunately, s**t can happen to any ship at any time; it's not driven by the age of the ship. Last year, Seabourn's brand new expedition ship, the Venture, had a problem with broken stabilizers and had to drop part of one Antarctic cruise and cancel several spring cruises to get the ship into dry dock for repairs.

We just came off the  Silver Shadow a week ago - we were on it for 21 days. We had emergency alarms three days out of 4 in a row. The first one was on an at sea day, and was a fire in the incinerator room. The crew were running around in lifejackets, but there was minimal info for the passengers. The fact they closed all the fire doors meant we just had to stay where we were, though we weren't actually told that is what was expected of us.  After about an hour we were told the emergency was under control.

Next day we had another emergency alarm, again while at sea. Burning smells had been detected on 4 decks. After about 45 minutes the captain announced the smell had been traced to a faulty air conditioning unit.

Two days later we had an alarm about 11pm, while overnighting in Boston. No instruction to do anything, and about 15 minutes later we were told the "slight emergency" was under control.

We thought alarms at sea - particularly fires - would be rather more serious than a "slight emergency". We also found the distinct lack of information about what was going on, or what we were supposed to do rather disconcerting.

This was our first cruise on Silversea and to be honest, for a number of reasons, we were not very impressed.

We sailed on the Shadow in December of 2019 in the Caribbean and enjoyed it very much. It had recently been refurbished and we liked the changes -- in particular, moving the casino from deck 5 and adding a cafe there. And we made some good friends having pre-dinner cocktails at The Bar each night.

I am curious about what was done in the most recent dry dock in 2022. One thing I find confusing is that the current deck plan on SS shows no mention of The Bar which used to be near the stern of deck 5 near the Show Lounge. It is there on the deck plan in the review of the Shadow on CC, but not on the SS website. Is the Bar still on the ship?

Just got off the Shadow a few weeks ago.  We didn't have any problems.  The ship was in good shape, and well maintained.  (A few rusty spots don't bother me as I have a few as well.)  I did find the layout of the ship to be a little odd, but the newer builds have corrected any "mistakes."

Was "The Bar" still in the lounge at the stern on Deck 5?

Yes.  The "observation lounge" in the front of the ship is the library with no bar.  We prefer to sit at the front of the ship for sail away and such.  It does have a coffee/soft drink bar.  So, we always ended up pouring our cocktail in the suite and taking it upstairs with us.

I could never understand why the forward lounge did not have a bar and plenty of comfortable seating; the ones on Seabourn are so good and well used, particularly before and after dinner and when going somewhere spectacular like the Trollfjord.
