That’s a shame, we liked him. He was due to be on our next cruise on SoD in May.

We liked him too.  We've only done two Saga cruises so far and Darin was the Captain on both. He was also due to be the Captain on our SoD July cruise.

Well, Capt Darin Bowland has updated his profile on LinkedIn to show that he is now a Captain for the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection as of February 2024 - so either his account has been hacked, or social meedja is right.

Saga have not updated their "Captains" page on the website.

Be nice if Saga got Captain Nick Sunderland back. ("Be wise and sanitise").

This list is not correct, we were on the May 23rd Norway cruise and expecting to have Captain Jason but he was already on leave, it was Captain Kim Tanner.

Obviously changed after publication as it's printed in advance. Lucky you had my favourite Cpt.

He was excellent but we missed meeting Jason again, we sailed with him several times in his Azamara days and he was on our Saga last year, both great Captains.

We were on SoD on the Italy and Western Mediterranean cruise, which returned to Portsmouth on 28th May.  Our Captain was Franko Papic, a Croatian, who was also good, we saw him around the ship a lot.  I assume he has taken over from Captain Darin Bowland.

Captain Franko was with them in 2021. He took over from Captain Darin halfway to the Caribbean so that Darin could spend Christmas at home. Liked him, but Kim's still my favourite.

Franko Papik has been with Saga for quite a while; since 2017, first as staff captain, now as relief captain.

Previously with Seabourn.

One formal night somebody on the next table asked him to be a bit quieter, and he explained (in all seriousness) that he only has two volumes - loud and louder. Great personality.

Cruises we have taken with Kim Tanner have been made all the more enjoyable by surprise elements he adds to the itinerary. On our recent West Coast Explorer he took us right up to the Old Man of Hoy, Loch Broom, St Kilda, the cliffs of Moher, Killary (the only fjord in Ireland), and the cliffs of Slieve League. Close up viewing of these places made the cruise really memorable. The Spirit of Adventure really lived up to its name.

Backwards down the Isle of Man to 'test reverse' on the new ship & 'parking' her in the middle of the Fastnet race. However safety is always his first priority so we never got to land on the Isles of Scilly. The helicopter practice paid off too as it happened in real life the following day. Happily the patient made a recovery.

Love the relationship/rapport he has with Kevin Woodford as well.

Interesting that there was no mention of a Silverseas ship visiting the next day and actually transferring passengers on shore visits. SoA was only in the bay for about 20 minutes and certainly not ‘docked’ as the article alleged. The ‘monster’ ship description was somewhat exaggerated too.

SOA is 236 metres in length and the GT 58,250.  By contrast HMS Invincible was 210 metres and 22,000 t fully laden. The Spirits are seriously large vessels, and locals might easily view them as monstrous.
