davidrlewis2302 Posted Thursday at 07:45 PM #76 Share Posted Thursday at 07:45 PM Anyone know where Icon is going for her maintenance? Miami Port schedule has her leaving early at 14:00 on Saturday. The destination is still listed as Roatan, but I guess that's not been updated. I don't think there's a dry dock anywhere in America/Caribbean that can take her, so it's presumably in water maintenance
uncwmark Posted Thursday at 08:20 PM #77 Share Posted Thursday at 08:20 PM Freeport? Believe there is a drydock there, although suspect it is booked well in advance? Isn't RCCL part owner of a dry dock facility in Freeport, too?
smokeybandit Posted Thursday at 08:25 PM #78 Share Posted Thursday at 08:25 PM I didn't get the impression this is a drydock repair. Just probably a repair they needed to be in port for.

They are plans to upgrade the drydocks to fit icon class ships
davidrlewis2302 Posted Thursday at 08:26 PM #80 Share Posted Thursday at 08:26 PM They are - but since the Oasis incident in 2019, I don't think there's a drydock there capable of taking an Oasis/Icon class ship. I believe that's why they send them to Cadiz in Spain for their overhauls. Next year will see a new dry dock capable of taking an Icon class ship. NeepierRoad Posted Thursday at 08:44 PM #81 Share Posted Thursday at 08:44 PM (edited) My advice is not to wait to rebook. RCCL canceled our Alaskan cruise last year on Radiance due to propulsion issues and we received 100% refund and 100% FCC. By the time we went to rebook three months later the prices had skyrocketed and our FCC only covered an ocean view stateroom where we had balconies on Radiance. It was a bit disheartening. Don't delay! Also, the FCC covers the cost of the stateroom only. If you choose to use the FCC on a less expensive cabin, the balance remaining is still a FCC and will not cover any extras like taxes, gratuities, etc. Edited Thursday at 08:55 PM by NeepierRoad More info to add
Rare Engineroom Snipe Posted Thursday at 08:56 PM #82 Share Posted Thursday at 08:56 PM RCI has contracted with the Bahamas for a $600,000,000 improvement in their dry dock for enhancements capable of handling the mega-ships. This contract does not address the current situation but will allow flexibility in the future. RCI is starting to address the reality of having a local garage when unexpected emergency situations occur.

It would be docked at one of the shipyard wet berths. They are currently all empty.
Rare JP350 Posted 3 hours ago #90 Share Posted 3 hours ago Maybe someone could clarify, but if the damage is on one of the azipods, could Icon have done an Allure or Utopia style itinerary, just "cruising slowly" around to Nassau, Freeport, Bimini, and Coco Cay, on her remaining pods while repairs are being done to one, or is it not possible to do repairs while at sea. Just something I was curious about.

Just something I was curious about. While most of the repairs can be done from inside the pods these days, when the ship is underway, the inoperable propeller wants to rotate, "freewheeling" in the ship's slip. There is a shaft lock to prevent this, but in the close confines of the azipod, it is not safe to have personnel in the pod, and the shaft partially dismantled doing the repairs, while relying on the shaft lock alone. So, the repairs have to be done in port, and it is most likely considered to be a job that would take more than one short port call to repair, so they cancelled the entire cruise. An outside repair to the azipod that can be done without dry docking is the renewal of a leaking propeller shaft seal, done with divers. This, also, obviously cannot be done underway, and would take more than one port call's worth of time.
