Crown Princess Incident

Look at this local paper:

Call me superstitious too, but I also find this interesting....wasn't Andy Procter the Grand's captain in February with the turn/tilt?? I also thought about the fuel incident last week and Martha Stewart christening the ship.

I hope we REALLY find the truth to what went wrong.

Hi Roe2ship:)

It was Nick Carlton on the Grand during Feb's list. I think Capt. Proctor was there a few weeks prior. He was a very nice captian, he was capt. on one of our prior sailings. Captain Carlton was sent to another smaller ship on Princess' fleet after the Grand incident.

as we just got our power back on which was off since 7PM last night here in Cleveland. I cut the lawn this morning since it was cooler at 78 degrees than a home with no AC. Basement was comfy so I did laundry too.

Got the beginning before we went dark & now I had Fox News on & Federal guys have the ship with passengers getting off to fly home. They want to know thee real truth before she is allowed to sail anywhere. Conflicting reasons: Computer malfunction, steer problem, rutter troubles. Typical Carnival with no answers to what happened to a ship out on her maiden voyage as this was week 3.

To see tapes folks made of all the damage, of people with draperies as slings getting into vans to go to hospitals. Many nurses & doctors were on vacation with their families, never thought they'd be working. I applaud them all for what they've done. Many parents were freaking when they had no idea where their kids were, are we surprised????

The little girl is going home then gentleman with broken ribs & pierced lungs is in critical condition & my prayers are with him. Around 100 were cut, broken & many just battered including crew members from knife stabs with them flying from dishwasher stacks to the trays in the dining room, to burns when pots of boiling water turned on them.

So now media will be ready to cover all the dirt, lawsuits, and all those wonderful topics folks love to watch at dinner. We were jsut commenting ath we remember Grand or Golden having the same thing happen with some Captain that had a heart attack victim and he wanted to get him back to shore so he did a 180 to everyone's pain.............. don't tell me it is a 2nd time for him whomever he was.

I wish all M&Mers from CC who were aboard their safe return to us.

This is my first time posting and I chose this thread to find information on what happened yesterday. My goodness, some of you are completely out of line with your off-topic comments. Guess that's a pitfall of an online board where you don't converse face to face.

Thanks to those of you who posted information and my prayers go out to all involved. I'll go back to lurking now.

Typical??????? What would you like them to tell you, it's been less than 24 hours. Maybe they need a little more time than you think. I have not read anywhere that Carnival said it might be Computer malfunction, steer problem, rutter troubles. I have only read what the press has to say MIGHT have been the problem.

1:30 P.M. UPDATE: Ship, on autopilot, tilted 15 degrees from horizontal

The Crown Princess was on autopilot when it suddenly tilted, the U.S. Coast Guard said during a news conference today at Port Canaveral.

Officials estimated the huge cruise ship listed 15 degrees to starboard (the right) from a horizontal plane on Tuesday afternoon when the steering problem hit, said James McLaughlin, chief of the Coast Guard's prevention unit based in Jacksonville, Fla.

"This is out of the ordinary," McLaughlin said. "It caught a lot of people off guard."

The vessel's data recorder -- much like an airplane's black box -- is being examined and will provide vital information, the Coast Guard official said. McLaughlin said he hoped the investigation can be wrapped up by Thursday.

The staff on the ship's bridge and engine room have been administered alcohol tests as part of the investigation. McLaughlin said the test is routine in incidents like this. He did not know when the results will be released.

Officials said during the news conference that 140 people received medical treatment.

CNN reported this morning that a passenger was told by a senior officer on the Crown that the list was 38 degrees and a list of 45 would capsize the ship. Paul

This is deadly serious. If any of you were on this misadventure and have photos of the damage please write me at w0kie@yahoo.com (the character after the w is the number zero) and if you give me permission I'll post them by my Princess photo site with your name as the source.

Well I see I am being mocked about my degree and advice which is fine. I am not going to stoop to a lower being just to play kids games but we economist are the ones that predict and follow the economies of the world so when we head into a dowturn which we are do for one because we can not always be going up you will be wodering why the economist did not warn you and now you are laid off and your retirement funds are in a downturn.

Yea, you MIT folks have done such a swell job: Airlines going under, US auto industry going under, housing crashing, debt (personal and government) out of control.

The damage won't be bad at all. Hell, most of these people will be stupid enough to accept refunds and a free cruise and will likely sign away their rights to sue. The few that do sue because they have a quarter size bruise will go away for a few grand. The seriously hurt will likely come to an agreement for six-figures. In the end, no big deal. Being an economist you should know that drug companies, the government, etc. etc. pay out millions to people who have suffered damages.

Hell, if Princess was smart, they would take a few grand in cash to every one and spread it around on the table...make it $20s. Most will quickly lose their get rich quick attitude and take the money...considering how much debt many folks are in.

Carol & Nancy........I so enjoyed your wonderful posts all week and now, so sad, about what you have gone through. Thankfully, you both are fine and I send best wishes and a speedy recovery to all that were injured during this incident.

Have a safe journey home!

It was definately more than 15 degrees...15 degrees would not have caused me to slide straight out of my bed into my door and fall into the hallway...

Ive been hearing lots of different figures from lots of differnet places. Your source said 15 degrees, others have said 38 degrees....also I heard that around 340 people recieved some sort of medical attention, which is believeable....lots of people walking around the ship today with casts and wraps and slings and such. Probably a lot of minor cuts...sooo much broken glass everywhere...

KUDOS to the crew of the Crown...they have been absolutely amazing during this time. Dinner on Tuesday night was the best I had all cruise...they really came together for the passengers...so much sincere care towards us. Our stewerd ran around to find all of us to make sure we were 100% OK even tho he himself was white as a ghost for about 1 1/2 hours after it happened. We love Kristoph!

Our news out here said it was a 30 degree list, and that over 200 people were transported to area hospitals.

My heart goes out to all on board that ship. I also believe a real miracle happened in that no one was killed and no one fell off the boat. It's unreal to think of it listing that much and no one fell overboard. I will continue to pray for the quick recovery of all the passengers. It has scared me, but will not keep me from cruising. I am just so surprised. I did not think anything like this could happen, and then to find out it has happened to a lesser degree before. Please - all cruise ship companies learn from this and bolt everything down. The TV's fell all over the place and large items like piano's went flying. After what happened on the Grand a couple monthes ago, they should have known to bolt all large items that could possibly be bolted down. That might come up in a lawsuit. Anyway - I hope the passengers are resting at home by now. Elizabeth

It actually does not take a huge list to cause the kind of damage described - or to cause you to fall out of bed - especially if you were on one of the upper decks. To illustrate my point, take a pen or pencil and stand it on its point while holding your finger on the top. Start tilting it (so the point stays in the same place). The shaft near the point (the lower decks) is not that displaced. Your finger at the top, though, (the upper decks) is much more displaced from center...it's the same degree list all the way up and down... but the higher you go, the more you feel it and the more it affects you. 15-20 degrees could absolutely knock you out of bed if you were *not* on the lower decks. If it had been 38-40 degrees, some people up top probably would have gone overboard.

Also, I remember an expert article on cruise ship design, and they are designed to right themselves even if they get almost on their sides (which is well more than 45 degrees).

I read earlier that the Casino chips went everywhere. How do they handle that? Let's say someone picked up a few $500 dollar chips....who's to say they didn't win them legitly? (Maybe that's a bit much, but let's say.... a few 25's...that wouldn't raise many eyebrows)?

Just curious...there are so many things the cruiseline has to have plans for in instances like this. I know they probably have cameras everywhere, but heck - those chips if they got loose could roll ANYWHERE and with a crowd panicking....who knows really.

Good luck to all those involved :) Many prayers and thoughts from a fellow cruiser.

I'm glad it appears everyone is going to be o.k. This had to be a truly horrifying event, I cant even imagine what it must have felt like. And at the same time, strangers were helping strangers, with the passengers and crew giving first-aid after the accident. Makes me feel a little bit better.

People tend to WAY over estimate degrees of slope.

Here in Colorado we have 7% grades and that is STEEP. You definately would roll out of bed at double that.

A black diamond ski trail is usually around 30-40 degrees, rarely greater than 40.

So 15 degrees would seem very steep, especially when stressed.
