Were You Ever SCARED on a cruise?

I have read threads on tendering and their dangers recently. It got me thinking of other things that are scary while cruising. In Jan 07 I was on my first cruise on the Victory. Being in a balcony room whenever I woke up in the middle of the night I would go out on the balcony and look out over the water. Most of the time, especially if there was no moon, it was totally black. It was pretty spooky to me. Also one night the ship was rocking and I was hoping it did not get any worse. I have seen pictures of listing ships and I knew I could not tolerate much of that.

So you see I am a worrier and get scared easy, but my first cruise overall was pretty uneventful. I loved it.

OK so now I am ready to hear of the times you were scared while cruising and what happened. Any good stories?

I was looking out from my balcony on one of those moonless nights... and there was a huge array of soft glowing lights floating in the air... totally creepy!

I finally figured it out. It was a flock of birds flying with us at exactly the same speed, about 50 feet off the ship. Only their white underbellies reflected enough light to see them, so they did not look like birds.

Later that night there was a WHAM! loud noise. It was a bird that had flown into our glass door, and now lying stunned on our balcony. He finally recovered and few off.

That was a scary night.

I wasnt scared but lots of people were.....We ran into a really really bad storm and they wouldnt let anyone on the decks and the ship was rocking so much people were falling out of their showers and it was impossible to walk without holding onto the railings. The water from the pool ran out onto the deck and through the ceiling into the casino. All the dishes in the buffet line were shattered all over the floors. I thought it was kinda exciting, my mom did not feel the same as me, she can not swim so she was terrified.

I did get kinda freaked out one night on the Celebration. We were in the Gulf of Mexico and there was a really big thunderstorm off a little bit in the distance. It was pretty hairy. I just got to thinking how we were sitting ducks out there and how fast the ship could go down if it was struck by lightning and caught on fire.

My first cruise was on the Norwegian Sea, and on the last night at dinner, one of the stabilizers (or something) went out, and the ship started vibrating violently. Silverware and dishes were literally jumping on the table. The wait staff continued on as if nothing were happening, but that didn't put me at ease. All I could thing of was the band playing on while the Titanic sank, and I thought, "My God, they're just going to keep bringing out entrees while we go down!"

I was traveling with a group of experienced cruisers, who also were not overly worried. I thought they were all nuts, but alas, we made it back to land after all.

I had a little too much to drink and fell asleep on my balcony chair, woke up later and couldn't move or see. Really freaked me out, I yelled for help and heard a bunch of laughing. My friends had duct tapped me to the chair and put a sleep mask over my eyes. Some friends huh!:o

Hi Steve, How the heck are you? So are you coming home for good in May? Tell Kathy I said hello. Hope to see you both again soon

Every time I've cruised. When they slip that final account of billing under my door on the last night.  :D

That is what I fear most on my first cruise. As for the other stuff, it doesn't scare me so much. I mean, if I die, I don't have to pay the S&S bill or the tips!

Ok, everyone, that was a JOKE!!!! Don't get all "tippy" on me! :p

We are doing well. Working all the time. I sure hope the daily jokes don't stop. Still a highlight of my day. We booked the Fantasy last January at the last minute. Couldn't pass up the deal we got. Decided to try out Princess in October.

I wondered why duct tape is always mentioned on packing lists...guess I know now.;)

In March 2003 we were on the Conquest out of New Orleans. On our return, we were told that due to heavy rains and snow melt up north, the Mississippi River was to high for the ship to get under the power lines back to NOLA so were would dock in Gulfport Ms. and bus to NOLA. About 1:00 Sunday morning the ship lurched hard to the port then to the starboard, everything went flying and breaking. All the liquor in the shops broke and ran down the hall, glass was everywhere. I just know we were doing the Titanic thing. We ran aground trying to get into the unfinished channel going into Gulfport. We sat dead in the water for about 8 hours awaiting the tide to come up, at that point the props stirred the mud we floated up and away. Needless to say, after 1:00 A.M. noone went back to bed, the alcohol that wasn't broken was passed to the passengers. It was scary and fun at the same time.

well then, this probably wasn't a very good thread for you to start LOL:p , but you asked:

july '06 -- tender from HMC in tropical depression. listing, people grabbing for every available life jacket, clutching it for dear life, many put them on (i put them on the kids a/s/a/p). people throwing up on tender as we got tossed around like a spit ball.

very, very scary... only time i was ever afraid on any sailing. wld never want a repeat.
