RCCL New Smoking Policy Discussion (merged)

Recommended Posts

ME.... with the biggest, nastiest, smelliest cigars I can find.... and I don't even LIKE cigars. The nicotine police irritate me to no end. I keep my smoking in private... now we can't smoke in our staterooms AWAY from everyone else? I bet I aquire a taste for cigars by the time my next two cruises are over..... It's ok for you booze hounds to jump overboard and wreck my vacation... it's perfectly acceptable to get all ripped up and drive your car... booze is socially acceptible. My cigarettes aren't.... go figure. Maybe because I don't drink and don't like the smell of the beer that someone spilled on the carpet, maybe we should get the cruise line to ban alcohol? Nothing but KoolAide and Juice Boxes for you from now on... and yeah, I have had drinks spilled on me on cruises... why should I have to put up with that? Why should I have to explain to my kids why "that person is walking, acting so funny"?

Goes both ways. Hope you enjoy cigar smoke. I will make certain I am out there on my balcony more than usual... and on deck as well. Anyone care to join me?

Good point except smoking is much worse. Second hand smoke causes cancer to innocent victims. Being in a pool with someone elses pee doesn't.
Second-hand smoke as well as smoking does not CAUSE anything. Like hundreds of other variables it could CONTRIBUTE to some diseases. If you believe secondhand smoke causes cancer, do not leave your home. But since you probably have not tested your house for Radon gas, that might not be a good alternative.

I am happy about the new policy. However, I had incorrectly assumed that smoking was never allowed in the staterooms. I didn't think to specify a non-smoking stateroom when I made my reservation last month. Is it possible to request a non-smoking stateroom? I really don't want to live with the smell of a smoky cabin for a week.

Smoking was and will be until 2008 allowed in all staterooms. So your question, after Jan.1 ,is you will have a non-smoking cabin, and before then, no you cannot request a non-smoking cabin because there is no such thing.

Cigar smoke doesn't bother me, I actually like it. Smoke outside doesn't bother me either. It does really effect my mother and Aunt though. I'm very happy about this new policy. I sent my email off thanking RCCL for what they have done! I would suggest all of those people who feel the same to do so as well.

That being said, I love my friends that smoke, I just would like to have them around a little longer if I can. :) (I know I could certainly go first! :o )

Unfortunately, it is all or nothing. Right now, all cabins on RCI are smoking allowed cabins. If you arrive and you find a smoky smell, alert your cabin attendant and they will clean the room. Among other things, they use a glycolizer like Ozium and/or an ionizer to remove the smoke from most of the fabrics. It cleans well enough for most people including some asthmatics and some allergy sufferers. For others, it cleans almost well enough. If you still have a problem, they can and will retreat as second time. The other alternative, is to bring a HEPA filter and run this while and after they clean (for us, the HEPA filter works better than a second cleaning since it also removes some of the chemical fragrances that are in the glycolizer products). For the most part, most cabins are fine (and my DW is one of those allergic and we are careful about it). There are not that many that actually smoke inside the rooms. Many smokers, smoke in designated smoking areas on board, many smoke on balconies and many just smoke sufficiently little that with the ventilation it isn't a huge deal. But there are sometimes that it is a problem. Just contact your cabin attendant and let them deal with it.

After 1 January 2008, all cabins will be non-smoking.

All that smoking has kept me out of the casinos for the past few years...I wish they could have a place where you could gamble that would be smoke free...maybe they could put some slots in the smoke free lounge, that would be nice.
All of this will only increase the amount of smoke in the casino. One less bar to smoke in, none in staterooms. As they need to control it, I don't see slots in the other areas. Hey, you can gamble on multiple levels...J/K:eek:

I'm not sure why people are giving RCCL so much kudos... Except for the smoke free bar it's a lose/lose situation

Smokers can't smoke in rooms = lose for smokers

More smoke in casino = lose for non smokers

More smoke drifting from balconies = lose for non-smokers

Since the majority of posters say they [almost] never have an issue with odor in the cabins makes it not a win for most non-smokers.

And... I don't believe for a second it is RCCL trying to make healthy balanced lifestyle and Vitality, or they'd cut your meals back, stop selling you alcohol until you drop or create areas for you to bake in the UV's.

BTW, I have not smoked since '84

Perhaps MRPie...You would just like to buck the heck up and use your real screen name...

Problem with your theory...Drinkers don't leave the stateroom dirty stinky stained and burnt. .....Trust me if they did...They would eliminate that...

Everyone is sick of the smell....So as long as you are stinking up someone eles stuff (RCI) they have the right to make you stop...

Dena, I really don't follow your logic. In many large cities, smoking is banned in public places including restaurants and bars. At home, my hubby only smokes outside in the driveway. On the ship, he only smokes on the balcony or designated smoking area.

I disagree with your statement "...non-smokers will now book inside cabins cheap and prepare for the free upgrade to a balcony they can't use"? Why wouldn't a non-smoker be able to use a balcony? By the way, I am a non-smoker and allergic to smoke, and have never been bothered by people smoking on the ship.

I have emailed them as well....I want to know if I can cancel and get my deposit back. In the UK we lose our deposit if we cancel. When I booked my May 2008 cruise, my brochure said "smoking is allowed in all staterooms". I didnt move the goalposts!!!!!

I don't really think so. According to the interview with RCI management, they have had a large volume of requests for non-smoking cabins. I know that I have made similar requests to the purser's desk and customer service. I haven't asked for all non-smoking cabins, but at least some so that people with allergies have a choice in the matter. For us, this is one of the reasons that I'll return to RCI and sail with them.

One of the problems that I had on the Carnival ship was the breadth of where smokers were allowed to smoke. The ultimate "insult to injury" situation was when I tried to use their Internet cafe which happened to be connected to the Onyx bar. It was a part of the Onyx bar. In addition to "live jazz music" playing for long blocks of time, the end of the bar immediately next to the computers (about 5-6 feet from the first computer) was where the staff chose to set up their smoking station. There wasn't a time when the Internet cafe did not smell of smoke and there were no other options if you needed to check e-mail or as in my case, I had to go and book an excursion myself because the excursion was sold out at the excursions desk.

I have to say the vast majority of my friends (including those with smokers as one half of the couple) would prefer non-smoking facilities as long as there were allowances made for smokers, like RCI has done.

After reading this thread I keep having this vision of a ship sailing the open sea and 2 huge clouds of smoke sitting just outside all the balconies, engulfing both sides of the ship........................:D

And I am still wondering what to do with my cigarette butts... :D

I certainly hope that your children or children you may have in the future aren't exposed to the beneficial effects of your judgemental attitude and your assumed sense of humor. This is a CRUISE message board. If you want to offer parenting advice, I can guide you to several online parenting forums. ;)

It wasn't parenting advice. You really had to have followed some of the earlier smoking discussion, some of which have vanished, to understand. It was an attempt at irony (but obviously one that didn't work well). I know from other posts I've read that "cruisinmama" wouldn't let her hubby smoke around the kids, which I think is wise. And yet, she has seemed pretty upset that RCI has chosen to keep smoking out of the cabins. Seems like that would be a positive thing.

Never mind. My intentions were obviously misconstrued to the point that she's bringing reinforcements from other forums to help slap me down. :( Again, my apologies, FWIW.

I am a nonsmoker and I think the new policy is absurd.

Do I like smoke, NO. Do I like the smell of others smoking, NO. Is it fair to not allow smoking on ships other than a specific lounge, NO.

I think the new policy stinks (no pun intended).

So if only 30% smoke on a cruise and they implement a smoking policy.....Just maybe more NON-SMOKERS would book a cruise due to a more smoke-free environment. Not knocking smokers but I am sure the food tastes better when you quit!!!
