Noises from cabin next door

Recommended Posts

I am new to RCCL, going on my first RCCL cruise in September and would like to know whether or not we will be able to hear noises coming from cabins on either side of us. We are light sleepers and were not sure whether or not the rooms have enough insulation to keep out unwanted noises. Where are the quiet rooms located and has anyone ever had any negative experiences with noises that keep you up all night?

I don't know about the ships on RCL, however, on another cruise line my husband and I never had any problems with noise. Maybe it was our good luck or just the time of year, but we have never had anything to wake us in the middle of the night. I think the location of your room, along with the time of year, may contribute to noise problems.

Oh, hopefully you won't be next door to my hubby who snores at night. :p

A cabin is a cabin is a cabin. For the most part, they are all about the same, noise-wise. You never know who will be next door. It could be the three teenaged kids of a couple half a ship away. It could be two octogenarians acting like newlyweds. :D

Except for the issue of who is in the next cabin, the quietest cabins are often on the aft. No one goes back there unless they belong there - less foot traffic in general, less noise from people just "passing by", particularly late at night when they have been drinking.

Sort of in conjunction with whats already been said, the only bothersome (and only slightly) noise we've ever heard was the neighbors toilet flushing. Once you get on board and flush your own, you'll understand why you can hear the neighbors... its a wonder you cant hear toilets from 10 cabins around you!

Other than that, the only other negative experience was actually for my Grandma in the cabin next to us.... there was something in her wall that was making noise, hard to explain, kind of like a ticking as the ship moved. Maybe it was some wiring hitting inside against the wall? Not sure. We called to have someone come check it, but really nothing you can do about something inside the wall. It was right over her head in bed, so it did keep her up some when the seas were rough. Other than that, you'll get some typical ship sounds... maybe a low hum from the engines depending where you are, but thats pretty rare. Sometimes over over show lounges you can hear them on the microphone. Sometimes under pool decks, lounge chairs being dragged across the floor over head. Your best bet for the quietest cabins are those with other cabins around (next to, over and under). If you are really light sleepers, it can be problematic for you any time you are away from your own home and the sounds you are used to.... so bring some ear plugs.

The other solution is to drink.

You'll fall asleep much faster and deeper. :D

The only think I can think of if you want to stay away from any noise is sometimes you get the college age kids out to have fun on a cruise and can be rowdy. (late night staggers back to the room) LOL I would think that they would book the cheaper lower in the ship rooms..........makes sense to me but may not be totally accurate.....just giving input :D

I travel with a fan....plug it in on the bedside table, facing away from me.....and it muffles any noise but the very loudest, with its white noise. Never leave home without it. It's made a huge difference in how I sleep.

You will probably appreciate the lack of major noise if you check what is above your choice of cabin and what is below your cabin. Mid ship is quieter than forward if you are on a lower deck. Unless you are taking family and need a connecting room, it will be slightly quieter if you don't choose a connecting room. Any of the other suggestions already given are useful about cutting down on noise that arrives with a person!

The motion of the ocean ,how tired you are and the wonderful bedding now on RCI will certainly help you have sound sleep. Enjoy!

Use whatever method works best for you.

I know that too much alcohol, yes I'll pass out, but I'll also wake up 3 hours later and not be able to sleep the rest of the night.

The last time we boarded a ship, our fan was confiscated, we brought it for air circulation, not the noise. So, if you bring one along, pack it in your checked luggage and make sure it is a very small one with a low wattage, you don't want to blow the fuses in the area.

I sometimes take an Advil PM, but only if I don't have to wake up early the next morning.

Earplugs help, make sure you get some that are comfortable.

You cannot control what other pax are doing, whether they are old or young, sober or drunk. There are just times when people are not very considerate of others. We've even had groups of middle aged people, laughing and conversing in the hallway late at night, simply making plans for the next day, blissfully unaware how loud they are. Most of the time, simply sticking your head out the door and politely asking them to quiet down will help, but you want to avoid angering drunk people who are far bolder than they would be sober.

After being on more than 12 cruises (I stopped counting) and 7 different lines, I can honestly say that you just cannot know in advance what noises there may or may not be. All I know is that I'm a lousy sleeper at home, yet on a ship I sleep all the time.

I *NEVER* sleep well when away from home *EXCEPT* while on a cruise- Comfortable beds, quiet cabins, the rocking of the ship...

It is the best vacation!

We have often had noise from above.... under the pool area, chairs/tables moved for cleaning at 2-4 AM.... so we always bring ear plugs.... last cruise had a small child crying late at night and talking early in the morning... heard next door... that is a first for us... Also had one cabin where we heard everyone walking/talking as they went by our cabin down the hall???? Anyway... agree with mojitodiva I leave ear plugs in our suitcase(s) just in case......

I am kind of worried about the noise issue in the room traveling but for a different reason....

We are travedling with my DD who is 2 1/2.... at times she throws temper tantrums, so we have thought ahead and know IF this happens we are going to bring her directly to the room... no matter where we are.

Here is the issue... I thought that would be the best thing to do for everyone involved. I am a behavior specialist and I know when or IF she throws one I need to remove her from the situation and then stand back and give her no extra attention for her performance. And also for the other passengers who do not deserve her "performance" removing her is most considerate as well....

BUT I feel terrible for the neighbors we might have.... other than throwing her over board:o there is nothing else I could do.

She is usually well behaved but at times can be unpredictable. She sleeps threw the night so none of these noise violations would be happening while people are sleeping... unless she is sick.

Any advice:o

PS LEAVING HER AT HOME IS NOT AN OPTION;)

I would not worry about the tantrums. She sleeps during the nite. :D So the tantrums take place I would think in the afternoon.

I've cruised when my kids were in the "terrible two's" stage and I do remember the tantrums!

Don't worry about it have a good cruise! :D

We've never had any problems with noise from adjoining cabins, and we were worried about it on all of our cruises ... first was during spring break (we didn't know any better!) and the others we had rowdy neighbors. When we saw them during the day, doors were open, music on, drinking, loud talking etc etc, but not a peep at night! (must've been following the drinking advice above)

We had more noise from people walking down the halls late at night, talking, not realizing how loud their voices were! No yelling or door banging, just talking on their way to wherever they were headed. Very annoying! but nothing we could do about it!

It has been reported here that connecting cabins tend to be noisier than those that do not connect So I would avoid booking a connecting cabin unless you know the folks next door in which case you can just tell them to "pipe down" !!!!lol

There is always the chance of noisy neighbors, but I do not think it is the norm, at least not in our experience.

Oh I couldn't agree more! The gentle rocking of the ship puts me out like a baby. I've never heard noise from other cabins unless they hit the wall with something. Usually I can just hear the water lapping against the side of the ship, a bit of creaking, and that's it. Plus I'm so tired from walking and dancing and all that I fall asleep quickly at the end of the day.

Last summer I took a 3-day RCI cruise to the Bahamas, and I didn't hear anything from the cabins next door. HOWEVER, the last night it was noisy due to the staff taking luggage down in the elevator for disembarking. I slept fine, since I can always sleep anywhere, anytime (I may be narcoleptic!), but my roommate didn't sleep a wink. She should've brought earplugs or something. We were on the fourth deck, in a nonconnecting room.

I sleep better at home than I do on ships. Unlike others, the ship movement does not lull me to sleep. I hear every creak and groan. I always travel with earplugs, and they help somewhat.

You too, Kathy? I hate that! I feel so awful the next day, too.
