libertybelle41 Posted August 29, 2008 #51 Share Posted August 29, 2008 Last time I saw it, it was awful! Mildew smell throughout. And it is the farthest thing from clean! We live in Houston and go to Galveston frequently. It is a great property - if someone would spend the money to gut it and start over. I wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy.caryn I agree. Such a shame because it's such a great location and views.
Galveston Cruiser Posted August 30, 2008 #52 Share Posted August 30, 2008 I really wish they would completely renovate the Flagship. Such a loss to just let it go down. When I was young (9-13ish) w[/left]e always stayed at the Commadore, but I always wished we could stay at the Flagship. I'm 48 now so it's oldddddddd. It will happen! There are grand plans for the hotel and land across the street. Including Fishtales, and vacant land to the west, and old tourist bureau to east and with walk over and an amusement park, and other bigger and better things to come. It will happen when the current operator of the hotel...... operating contract runs out. Landry's (tillman fetteta) bought real estate from city with current operator contract of hotel only in place . He Tillman has been been trying to evict him operator, but has not been successful. When he is evicted or the contract expires, Landrys has big plans, but until then, the roaches, bad service, poor structure of the pier and hotel will remain. Time is on side our side though, then it should be a grand place again.:)

We stayed at the Flagship many times for a few years after it opened and always had a grand time. Of course I was 40ish years younger, we'd party out by the pool until security ran us back inside! caryn
GORDONCHICK Posted September 12, 2008 #54 Share Posted September 12, 2008 Maybe Ike will hurt the Flagship enough that it can be completely redone! Dont' get me wrong - I don't want anyone hurt, but it's one way to clean house!
Plant Posted September 12, 2008 #55 Share Posted September 12, 2008 Not 15 minutes ago I said the same thing to my DH! It's a wonderful hotel idea that has just gone downhill :( . I'm sure they've evacuated and I hope they have insurance  !

We are in Austin and may only get a 1/2-1 in. and just breezy, but my thoughts and prayers are in the Galveston area.
RHefley228 Posted September 13, 2008 #57 Share Posted September 13, 2008 The Flagship suffered damage, but aside from the ramp from Seawall Boulevard to the parking lot collapsing, and part of the exterior being torn off, it doesn't look too serious. The nearby Balinese Room, unfortunately, was destroyed. http://www.click2houston.com/news/17466539/detail.html
*Mach* Posted September 13, 2008 #58 Share Posted September 13, 2008 The San Luis suffered broken windows and the Holiday Inn had some heavier damage to one of the corners and lost a chiller unit from the roof. I was told that the water was about three feet above pier level at the criuse terminal...
LEtue Posted September 14, 2008 #59 Share Posted September 14, 2008 There were lots of pictures of the Flagship on the Houston news channel yesterday. It sustained a lot of damage and it isn't accessible from the street because the two entrance ramps were wiped out. There were actually vehicles packed there that can get out. Looks like they will be getting some renovations.....

american classic72 Posted April 2, 2009 #61 Share Posted April 2, 2009 Does anyone know if this hotel has reopened? The website states it was going to open mid January. Love to feed the birds from the balcony
RHefley228 Posted April 3, 2009 #62 Share Posted April 3, 2009 I doubt seriously that the Flagship will ever reopen. There was a long-running legal dispute between the owner (Tilman Fertitta) and the leaseholder/manager even before Ike, and the place (though I love it) had fallen into a sort of moldy disrepair. I suspect Fertitta would like to demolish it and build a casino on the pier. The destroyed Balinese Room on the wooden pier to the east of the Flagship was the crown jewel of illegal gambling in Galveston for years.
Galveston Cruiser Posted April 3, 2009 #63 Share Posted April 3, 2009 Fertitta's plans were for a victorian hotel with ferris wheel at the end of the pier. The Flagship under the current management had fallen into horrendous condition with elevators, water, a/c etc. not working. We are all hoping Fertitta can proceed with the reconstruction of the hotel and make it the crown jewel on the island. Murdocks, between the Flagship and Balinese, will be rebuilt with opening planned for 2010.
american classic72 Posted April 3, 2009 #64 Share Posted April 3, 2009 Thanks for the update. I live in Tennessee and we were there the week before the storm. The rooms weren't the greatest but we wanted to stay there for the view. The seagulls were fat by the time I left. I was only trying to hold out to see if they would reopen before I booked something else. Maybe sometime in the future they will make things right. Does anyone know if the holiday inn sunspree resort is open? We have stayed at quite a few hotels over the past few years down there and we have our favorites...Hopefully when the daughter graduates, Galveston will get two new residents... Thanks for the information
cks Posted April 3, 2009 #65 Share Posted April 3, 2009 Yes, the Sunspree resort is open. In fact, I might imbibe at Captain Jack's (the hotel's cabana bar) later today.:)
american classic72 Posted April 4, 2009 #66 Share Posted April 4, 2009 Thanks for the info on the sunspree. I can't say that I could join you at the cabana, it would take about 9 hours to get there but have a drink for me!!!!! Yes, the Sunspree resort is open. lady_cruiser Posted April 30, 2009 #67 Share Posted April 30, 2009 Is this the hotel that was destroyed by the last hurricane to hit Galveston? We were in Galveston for two cruises, one in January and one in February, and we noticed a hotel over the water that is condemned. It looks like an empty shell. It's just my opinion but the hotel should have been condemned long before Ike rolled through town. To answer your question, yes that is the old Flagship hotel.
