traveler's checks

Does any one know if we can get traveler's checks cashed on the ship? We're going to be on the Dawn next week and we're a little leery of carrying as much cash as we think we'll need. I guess we could probably find banks in port to cash them.

Travelers checks can be cashed on the ship. The pursers desk won't cash personal checks, so if you don't want to carry a lot of cash then travelers checks are the best option. Also keep in mind a lot of credit cards charge fees for charges made internationally when a money conversion is needed. This is another reason to bring travelers checks, so you can cash some on the ship before arriving in port if you plan to shop.

Actually, most US credit cards now charge a fee for charges made in US $ if made out of country. No money conversion is required for the fee.

Cash advances on credit cards can be very expensive. Bank debit cards tend to be a lot cheaper. We call the bank to tell them we'll be (wherever) so they won't be surprised by an unusual transaction.

I have never incurred a fee for US$ denominated charges to Amex, Visa, or Mastercard anywhere in the Caribbean.

Most of the cards started these fees in 2008. You may have avoided the charge on your earlier Caribbean cruise this year, but I bet you will have them on the one scheduled for later this year.

Also, remember that some Caribbean ports are part of the USA (St.Thomas, St.John, San Juan), so the extra fee would not apply to charges made at these ports.

We use this preloaded card and have never had it turn down anywhere.

Used it in Columbia, Costa Rica, Jamica, ect..It was better than TC as some places won't take them due to fraud but his is like debit card and will use whatever currency for the country you are in..just check at you bank for what they have and make sure if you going out of the country that it's for international use as there are a couple of them, one for US travel and one for international.
