Putting Things in Perspective

My wife and I cruise for the pleasure of enjoying the ship. We generally do not do excursions and will occasionally go ashore for some shopping. So I do not have much information about what’s happening ashore. Also, the last time we cruised was a year ago on the Caribbean Princess so much of what I say will be a comparison of my experiences on the CB as they compare to Ruby. Hopefully, during my narratives, many of your questions will be answered. Additional, I will try to respond to any question that the readers may have.

Embarkation

We are fortunate to live about 45 minutes from Port Everglades. We left our home at 10 AM and were sitting in the terminal waiting to board by 11:00 AM. After a brief wait, we were allowed to check-in at the counter and proceeded upstairs where we had a brief wait before we were finally allowed to board the ship around 11:45 AM. After taking our carry-on to our stateroom (A714 – Balcony), we proceeded up to Horizon Court for some lunch. After returning to our stateroom I discovered I did not have my sunglasses ( I knew I brought them because I used them while driving)

After straining my brain I remembered, after dropping our luggage and DW at the pier I drove to the garage to park the car. At that time, because it was dim in the garage I had switched glasses and place my sunglasses in the case and laid them on the console. Upon finding a spot, I got out of the car and placed the glass case on the roof while I got a backpack out of the back seat. Yea, I walked away heading to the ship leaving my sun glasses on the roof of the car. I had to leave the ship ( like swimming against the tide) to go retrieve them. I know many are thinking, “Why didn’t the idiot just buy another pair?. And you are right, I should have, except these are prescription glasses and I needed them if I wanted to sit outside and read.

Brought four bottles of wine aboard with no problem One each packed in our two pieces of checked luggage and two bottles in my carry-on.

Ruby vs Caribbean Princess

The ships are essentially the same length and tonnage, but the CB has a capacity of about 80 more passengers. Let’s see if I can get this right: Club Fusion is in the same locations, as is the Explorer’s Lounge, Theater and Casino essentially same locations, although in my opinion the Ruby Casino is roomier because it appears they have fewer slots ( and I can attest to the fact that they are mighty tight). The “Photo Area” is at the same location, but it seemed to cover a larger area (boy do they sell a lot of photos).

The Crown Grill (steak and seafood) is where Sabatini’s is on the CB; and Sabatini’s is up on deck 16 aft with a nice bar/lounge (Adagio) adjacent to it. The Wheel House Bar is where Sterling Steak House is on the CB. Skywalker’s is up and aft, but isn’t the same construction (doesn’t look like a bridge across the aft part of the ship. All in all the rest is much the same, except for the improvements to the Atrium area. They still have the same merchandise shops, but there are several pleasant venues, as well as frequent “street performers”. When there are no “street performers”, there is usually a piano player or a trio playing, what I call “Titanic Music”.

Overall View of the Cruise

Being it was Thanksgiving week there were a lot of families and children. One crew said there were about 500 kids, another said about 300. Overall, most were well behaved and I didn’t see any big problems. Did see some kids walking through the buffet in teir bathing suits barefoot, saw small chilled taking lettuce with his bare hands and others eating food while still in the line. I view these problems as parents not supervising vs. bad kids. As I said, overall I think the kids were generally well behaved.

First two days of the cruise the weather was not very good, in fact we had to by pass Ocho Rios as the Captain wouldn’t enter the harbor due to high winds (50 – 60 MPH). After that the weather improved and the remainder of the cruise it was great.

There were three football games available for viewing on Sunday; and all the games played on Thanksgiving were also available. They advertised them in the Patter as being available in Skywalker’s, but you could also get them on your room TV.

Entertainment was decent. Phil Tag is always funny, even if you have heard some of his material previously. The Mentalist, Wayne Hoffman was also great. The production show Broadway Ballroom was also entertaining. Better than many previous Princess productions. I enjoyed the International Crew Show as well

We ate in Michalangelo DR. Reserved the same table for the week. Roger was the Head Waiter (knew him from other cruises). Also, Jan, the Maître’ d took good care of us, insuring our table was always available so we could walk right in at our appointed time.. Our waiters were Gergerly from Hungary and Luis from Portugal. They did a great job. For those who know him, Godwin was upstairs in the DaVinci DR

MUTS included, Mamma Mia, The Hulk, The Dark Night, Swing Vote, Get Smart and Hancock to name a few.

Atrium

I found all of the street performers to be enjoyable. Don’t miss Hodman and Sally. I can’t describe them except to say they are cool and weird. Make sure you talk to them. I first thought they were carrying their heads in their hands until I realized they had huge bundles of luggage or something on their backs. You have to see them to understand what I am trying to say. There were also jugglers, balancing acts and other performers. Some days the Princess Performers did a sample from the evening show.

Vines

Vines is a small bar tucked in one section of the Atrium that serves wine and sushi (I don’t get the combination). When you order a glass of wine in is served in a proper Riedel glass along with a (free) small plate appetizer. Each night the appetizer was different, either cheese, or prosciutto, or some combination. They also have flights; and you can purchase a plate of chesses and/or sushi. DW and I stopped by each evening for a glass of wine before dinner ( that’s after we had a glass or two in the cabin).

International Café

Another nice service/food counter set off in a corner of the Atrium. Most of what is offered is free. There is a blackboard that lists the items for which there is a nominal charge. It changes slightly each day. Some items that you pay for: gelato, candied aplles, goodie baskets, chocolate fondue. Items that are free: I think everything that is in the display case such as salads, sandwiches, desserts. They also walk around in the late afternoon with trays of cookies and milk.

Miscellaneous

Plenty of jeans in the dining room.

On formal night saw men without any type of jacket.

On casual nights saw men in t-shirts and shorts.

The bed in our stateroom was firm; no sag in the middle.

Went up one evening to the Horizon Court to get some fruit and cheese to have with our wine before dinner and lo and behold the HC now closes at 5:30 PM. Only Caribe Café is open. Used to be both were open?????

Billy is still running his Art – Dog and Pony Show with all the cheap champaign you can drink.

If you order the continental breakfast at night before retiring, be careful what time you request delivery. Ours was always delivered 15 minutes before the requested time ( i.e. if you request delivery between 8:00 and 8:30 be assured it will arrive at 7:45).

If you miss breakfast at Horizon Court, the lunch menu in the dining room has two breakfast entrees.

Hand Sanitizers were available at Horizon Court, but didn’t see any around the dining rooms.

One night, the photographer took individual head shots of people in the DR. No couples or groups. Another money maker for the photo sales. It also seemed that every night was Portrait Night.

Waffles and ice cream in Horizon Court at 3 PM daily.

Not sure what they changed in the Princess Patter format, but seems to have less info and detail

The Patter used to have the night’s theme menu for the Caribe Café and now they don’t publish that info.

Got hit with the $15 corkage fee in DR, usually get a break after paying it once. Maybe the crew is not yet comfortable and didn’t want to take any risks/liberties.

Disembarkation

We chose Express Disembarkation – walk off carrying all your luggage. We were assigned to Group 1 which was designated to disembark at 7:10 AM from the Michelangelo DR. We headed down at 6:40 to avoid the morning rush and people were already arriving. You enter by the main entrance to the DR (port side) and leave the DR from the exit at the starboard side. As we were some of the first to arrive we waited close to the exit door. As time went by the room began to fill up, but everyone formed up as orderly as possible considering the DR was full of tables and chairs. As it got close to the scheduled disembarkation time two young women pushed their way through the entire group to get up front. I mentioned that everyone was waiting to get off and many had planes to catch etc. and what made them so special that they could rudely push through the crowd to the front. They said that they had a 9:00 AM flight to catch at FLL. I said good luck as there are 7 other ships that are arriving in port to which she replied (snottily) “What are you worried about anyway, you will get off soon enough”.

But wait readers, there is justice in the world! After the brief encounter we began to disembark (about 7:20). Everything went smoothly and as DW and I exited the terminal and were heading to the garage we saw the two young ladies with a panic look are the lovely faces ---- it turned out the cabs were on strike for the port and the FLL airport.

If you young ladies read cruise critic, I hope you got to the airport in time to make your flight - not.

Summary

Overall it was a great cruise, never realyy had a bad one. Would definitely cruise on Ruby again. It is a beautiful ship with a great crew. Gave a deposit for a future cruise TBD.

I will try to answer any questions you all may have.

Bob

Bob, Great review, almost as if I had written it myself. We were in walkoff group 4, and it was fairly orderly there, although the Princess staff started calling for group 5 to disembark before those of us in group 4 had been able to fully exit the dining room, and people started crowding in from all directions, and it made a log jam at the disembarkment area, perhaps they could let one group fully disembark before calling another.

We too have been on the Caribbean and Grand Princess ships, and while the Ruby is more elegant, I wouldn't hesitate to book the others. In fact, we are doing the Crown this spring, and I suspect she is mostly identical to the Ruby.

We enjoyed the street performers, and I thought the production shows that we saw (Ballroom Broadway and Once upon a dream) were better than I have seen on previous ships. Phil Tag and Wayne Huffman were both good as well.

I too was disappointed in the buffet times, having on the Caribe Cafe open late in the evenings was kind of a bummer for me. Overall, most of the desserts seem devoid of taste, but I'm not overall that picky. There's plenty of variety.

I also agree with you on dining room clothing. They might as well drop any dress codes, as they don't enforce them. Lots of smart casual on formal nights, and lots of beach attire on smart casual nights. I don't really care, but why have the rule if you aren't going to enforce it.

I wish they would use MUTS more, seems like a lot of dead time where it's just sitting there with the Princess logo on the screen. Show some sitcom's or something to fill time.

Overall a great cruise though, and with a FCC set up, we are ready to go again!

Thanks for the review - like Mike I could have written it myself for the first 2 weeks onboard:D

We also did walk off self embarement and it was really fast and no glitches - we caught a cab with no problem the prior week and were at the airport way before the 3 hour check in time.

We are next on CB and hope not disappointed after the Ruby:D Love those FCC's bought 3 more in addition to the one I had:eek::eek:

We are booked on the Ruby in April for the Transatlantic, 16 days. We were thinking about eating at the buffet in the evening some nights, from your review sounds like it closes at 5:30pm. No sure what's available at the Cafe, will have to check it out when we board.

We are looking for simple food items and some peace and quiet thought the buffet would be an excellent option for some nights.

Anyone eat at the Cafe in the evening, if so what do they serve?

Thank you for taking the time to do a review. How was the room service coffee-was it brewed?

Jan 17th/09 Ruby-count down-lol!

The room service coffee is the same @#$% that's everywhere else. Good coffee is at the coffee bar on 5 and at the Wheelhouse during pub lunch.

You can eat up there every night if you so desire. Cafe Caribe is just another buffet in lieu of Horizon Ct. It's the back of the ship where you would take your Horizon Court food when you couldn't find a table in that section. You will find most of the diningroom entrees as well as all the veggies, pasta, salads, desserts, etc.

The seafood buffet is in CC. on first night.

Mike - Thanks for the info about the transport to the airport. Also thanks for the comments about the review and cruise

New2cruisin - I like the uper decks Aloha/Riviera obviously the higher you are the more pronounced any rocking will be. That said, even during our first day and a half when the seas were somewhat rough, it wasn't very bad. No reason to want to change locations that's for sure. You will like the Aloha deck.

Julia - I am sure you will love the CB (I think it has undergone some refurbishing). I always ejoyed being on board and was sorry when she left FLL.

Billrcco90278 - I liked the location of our cabin. It was a few steps from the aft elevators/stairs. Easy walk up to the Horizon Court and quick trip down elevators to Promenade Deck for access to all the lower deck activities. Federico was our room steward. When we boarded I told him all our preferences and never had to ask for anything after that. When we left the room it was rapidly serviced.

Aquagirl1 - as Pia pointed out the room service coffee sucks, but unless you want to head out early and track down the good stuff, that's the best you will get

My thoughts exactly! I hate the idea of having to leave the cabin for coffee, but treasure that cup on the balcony in morn. My question is - do you transport the coffee pot in carry-on? May sound like a stupid question.... but appreciate advice. Thanks!

Mjtwin,

Yes, I have a Delonghi 4 cup w/ a stainless steel pot, permanent filter. Perfect for cruising. No worry of breakage. We travel with two sets of in-laws and get cabins next to each other, always w/ us in the middle. I am designated coffee maker and just pass cups on the balconys to left and right. It's always very nice in the morning to meet up and enjoy the morning.

I carry a one cup Melitta and of course it's in my carryon. I must have that first cup within 5 minutes out of bed and my husband must have his last cup 5 minutes before he goes to sleep.

I am guessing, no. The coffee card is really intended for one cup at a time. They might do it for a one or two cup pot. I guess you could ask. I brought my own small pot and never used it. Will not schlep it along again. I did purchase a stainless steel Princess coffee cup when I bought the coffee card. They are only $6.00 if you buy it when you get the card. Nice to have a nice, large cup which they will fill up.
