Paradise in Drydock - San Francisco

So does that mean its getting a makeover??

This was our first cruise and we throughly loved it, heard it was a big party ship but ours was pretty sedate and they had a good staff.

I would like to do that one again in March and go back to Catalina.

Yes, it's getting updated with the Waterworks, etc. Not sure how complete the makeover will be with only about 12 days in drydock.

I think the four nighter during the week has less of a party atmosphere - that is what we are hoping, anyway.

We have not been to Catalina in AGES, so we are looking forward to that as well! Ensenada, not so much. We will probably hang on the ship and sit on our balcony to watch all the people running back to catch the ship in time because they stayed at Papas & Beer too long!:p

Yay!!!:D Hopefully flatscreens!

Yes, the 4 day weekday cruise is much more calm (but still fun) than the 3 day weekend cruise.

And see...

I love Catalina as a cruise destination. It's a perfectly beautiful, quaint little port stop. If it was the same island located in the Caribbean somewhere - people would be continually raving about it.

It's just because it's so close to LA that people kind of "forget" what a cool little place it is.

Enjoy!:D

Planned Refurbishments for Drydock 12/01/08-12/14/08

  • "Circle C" Young Teens club will be added to Atlantic Deck 8 (previously, the card room), featuring a high-tech sound and lighting system, plasma-screen TVs displaying movies and music videos, a touch-screen jukebox, and gaming pods with the latest video games and consoles.
  • "Evolutions of Fun": Serenity Adults-Only Retreat Area
  • Children's wading pool will be moved to Verandah Deck 11 aft section, replacing one of the whirlpools.
  • A variety of cosmetic enhancements such as new carpeting, wall coverings and tile work throughout the ship.
  • Category 12 Suites will be refurbished, including bathrooms and flat-screen TV's.
  • Internet WIFI access will be bow-to-stern
  • A Mongoian Wok station and Rotissiere will be added to the Lido Restaurant

Waterworks requires a drydock for 30 days. Paradise won't get this done until 2010 probably.

Im happy for you guys over there on the left coast, the Fantasy class ships are sooooo much better with the new cabins and upgrades.

We also took the 4 day M-F cruise on Paradise and had a great time. I was surprised to see that it was calmer than similar cruises we've taken from FL. I figured a boat load of Californians would be crazy, but it was pretty calm the entire time.

Darth, what did you do in Catalina?

Since we went in February, swimming wasn't an option so we just did some shopping and sightseeing around the island. We were going to rent a golf cart, but we decided to just hoof it around Avalon. Since I had never been to CA. before, it was pretty interesting to see. After having lunch and getting some pictures we headed back to the ship. We also had an added treat, when we were headed into Avalon a pod of Dolphins surrounded and swam with our tender, it was so cool!

I would recommend renting a golf cart, the map they give you takes you way up in the hills (right up to the place where they had a huge wildfire last year) and you get great vistas and view of the ship (in my pics). Lots (relatively speaking) of restaurants and bars right there too!

Try the 3 day cruise next time out of Calif..........like night and day:D

Yeah, thats what I figured. I can only take a 3 day cruise every once in awhile, the hangovers are getting worse by the year. Besides, if we fly cross country again, Im gonna want to do a 7 day. Maybe on the Carnival Pepto....;)

I'm excited for Circle "C" as I have a 14 almost 15 yr ds. He always has plenty to do, but having their "own" space it fun for them.

I might try the serenity area and the buffet enhancements as well.

Looks good for New Years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, we were thinking of the carts. Did that years and years and years ago. I read on one thread that they take cash only. Did you find this to be true? No almighty plastic? In America???

It appears the the Carnival Paradise arrived in drydock yesterday morning in San Francisco. I saw the Carnival funnel from up on the hill yesterday and it looks like the Paradise.

http://www.boatingsf.com/ais_map.php

It's kind of funny. When you put your cursor on where the Paradise is on that site it says it is moving at 102.3 kt (knots).......That's funny.

Yes the Golf carts require cash only. If I remember correctly it is $40.00 per hour and a $40.00 deposit. An hour was plenty of time for us to see everything we wanted to. CathyZ ( my DW ) is correct the views are amazing!

That's right, or $80.00 for 3 hours is you commit up-front. We stopped at the nature center, the botanical gardens, and the little museum in the casino. So, the 3 hours was right for us this past October. But, if you just want to do the loop, 1 hour is probably fine. As you walk off the pier, the rental places are less than two blocks to the right or left, take your choice.

What is a Category 12 Suite? I'm going on my first cruise soon, so all of this is new to me.

There are 2 categories of suites on Carnival ships, category 11 and category 12. Category 12 is the largest and of course costs more, look at carnival.com for locations and a few pictures.
