I can remember vacationing in Barbados several times back in the 6's when I was quite young. I remember the main transportation then besides buses was donkey carts. They have long disappeared. I'm looking for any photos that can be shared from that period. I also remember ladies carrying large straw baskets on their heads selling items on the beach as well as large sugar cane fields. I remember going to Sam Lords castle and Harisons cave but I don't see much mention of them here - any other old pictures would be appreciated.

If you're registered on Facebook, there's a special interest group called Old Time Photos

that features old pics of Barbados like the ones you're looking for.

Go check it out..seriously!

What a wonderful thread. To be honest, when I started researching for our upcoming cruise, Barbados wasn't one of the islands I was looking forward to the most. But - WOW! I am in awe of your pictures, and can't wait for our day there. We're beach bums, and are planning to hop in a taxi and head to Rockley/Bar K'Nai for the day. One question - are Accra and Rockley the same beach, or different sections of the same beach? Sometimes I see both names together, other times just one or the other. Wondering what to tell the driver?

Again - love your pictures. You are a true asset to the island. :)

Thank you for the kind words...

Accra Beach Hotel is located on Rockley Beach, but for reasons unknown to us locals :D

we say Accra Beach when we really mean Rockley Beach.

yes the two are one-and-the-same!

Tell the taxi driver you want to go to Rockley Beach

becoz if you say Accra he'll take you to the hotel

where they might? charge you a day-pass rate (which may not turn out badly, huh?)

but most ppl want to go to the beach au naturel, I think.

Bar Kanei used to be called SUGAR REEF, back when it belonged to Rockley Resorts

I mention this becoz I've seen posts saying some taxi drivers don't recognize the name Bar Kanei

but they might remember Sugar Reef, up at the top end of Acc...sorry Rockley Beach

As you face the water, Bar Kanei is to your left, heading East

BarK-080.jpg

-at the quieter, less populated end of the beach

about 150 yds. from where you're likely to be dropped off by your taxi

Don't know if you're aware but..

I've also started some other Post your memorable pics of.. threads for other islands

St.Maarten, Antigua, Trinidad, Dominica -plus 1 or 2 others I can't recall.

You'll find them listed the same way, in each case.

Some are better/more enthusiastic than others, but in all cases

you should find interesting pics by myself and by others.

Please consider posting your pics when you get back?

i just love this photo!!!!!
That's my Mom at far left in the patterned dress

DNH_-1955.jpg

and my Dad standing behind me, in the checkered shirt.

The other folks were a couple also coming out to the West Indies with us

and for the life of me I can't remember their names, although I've had it on the tip of my tongue now

for several years!!

That ship sure was no cruise ship.

I think it was a general cargo ship of the BOOTH Seamship Line

and they had a few cabins for people doing crossings

at a time when there was no such thing as trans-Atlantic flights!

-not yet! Today we do it in just eight hours!!

Just look at those dreadful rudimentary deck-chairs! :D

Some time ago I found a postcard of the ship(attached below)

and can't believe my parents risked my life crossing the Atlantic is that TUB!

aplmac,

We just returned from a 10 day cruise on the Emerald Princess and was not able to see much of your beautiful island because of the rain and flooding that you had. We were very disappoointed but hopefully will return soon. We were able to make it into town, shop in some of the stores and I had flying fish sandwich and your local beer....Banks... which I enjoyed very much. I hope the rain had stopped and you did not experience much damage.

We were very disappointed but hopefully will return soon. We've been having a very wet Rainy Season

and just about a week ago had a tropical wave stuck right over the islands

for four days of straight rain --inches of rainfall per day..

October 1st, 2nd, 3rd. and 4th.

Yes, quite a bit of local flooding

(drainage isn't much of a priority here on Sunny Barbados -until it decides to pour!)

several cars lost by being submerged..

and a local lady rescued dramatically as per this YouTube video clip

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gajn8X3ut9k

filmed by our local TV station!

Everyone commented that she made it out with her handbag!! :D

-she wasn't giving that up easily!!

Below are two photos of a watercourse

about a half-mile away from where the dramatic YouTube rescue took place.

You can see just how completely scoured the bottom of the riverbed is

giving some indication of the sheer water volume involved.

LOVE your photos...just looked at the entire thread :)

Question - we will be flying in a day early in jan 2011 before our windstar cruise and are hoping to hire a driver for a quick tour. We would love to see orchid world. Do you know if it is open on Sundays? Also, we would have loved to taken the mount gay rum tour but their web site says they are closed on Sundays. Do you know of another local rum maker? Or perhaps we are better off visiting a rum shop? Can you tell we enjoy rum?

Again, your photos are wonderful and we cannot wait to see Barbados.

I just phoned Orchid World for you..

Yes they open Sundays, from 9 - 5.

And when you see this...

Thanks for the quick reply. Now for that rum question.... Any suggestions?

Also, do you suggest we contact a tour operator such as glory tours or just have the hotel arrange a taxi driver for the day? I realize when you live at a destination you rarely have the opportunity to book a sightseeing tour yourself, but maybe you have heard good things from others?

Thank you again for all your helpful info here on the boards.

Which beach is this? It's beautiful!

OMG - Okay, I'm going to this beach next month. This picture is too breathtaking. I went to Barbados in 2004 to Malibu Beach.....it was nice but too crowded. This picture seems so private....heaven on earth...ahhh.:):)
