Enough of the anger - what's the most awesome thing you've ever seen while at sea?

Seeing the Green Flash at sunset on a cruise while celebrating my younger brother's life (we had lost him earlier that year). He had always talked about the Green Flash, that was the first time I had seen it and even caught it in a photo. We say that he sent it to us.

How cool is that? Of course he did...

This is one of the best threads I've read in a very long time. Thanks, OP!

I guess my best memories come from our Alaska cruise in 2007. We usually go to the Caribbean, because I love my sun and sand. My husband, not so much, but, it's a cruise, so he'll go where ever I choose. Having said that, he's always wanted to go to Alaska, but knew it would never happen (not so much sun and sand there, doncha' know?).

So, anyway, 2 yrs ago, I said "Alaska". And the memories began and never stopped.

As we were pulling into Ketchikan, one of the first things we saw was a bald eagle swooping into the water and coming back up with a fish. We'd never seen a bald eagle in the wild.

When we went to Totem Bight, there were more bald eagles than we could count. My husband's head seemed to be on a swivel.

On a whale watching tour in Juneau, our first sighting was a full breech. We saw a momma whale coming up to eat from maybe 20 feet from the boat. We saw so many whales, it waws unreal. Then, on the way back, we were followed by several dolphins.

I guess the best memory of it all was the pure joy on my husband's face that whole week.

We've all had about enough of the anger and whining about missed ports - how about a positive thread for a change? What's the most awesome thing you've seen while at sea and where and what ship were you on? One of those moments that just makes you thankful to be alive, healthy, and able to take a wonderful vacation with your family?

I was thinking this morning about one of mine - on the Liberty in 2007, late at night, headed from Costa Rica to Panama we stepped out on the balcony only to see what looked like thousands of shooting stars only they were beside us and not overheard. Looking closer, we realized that it was a flock of thousands of small yellow birds and the ship's lights were reflecting off of them. They were darting around and diving and it really looked like a meteor shower. It was the end of October and probably some sort of migration - never could get a close enough look to figure out what kind of bird they were. But it's one of those moments forever set in my memory. The beauty of nature, the sea, and the love of my life to share it with. :D

So what's yours?

I dont have the time right now to read all the posts, maybe this has been said already.....but being as that the splendor last week was my first carnival cruise, I dont have much else to compare to, but to date, the best thing Ive seen so far was just looking at cabo while we did our technical stop. I didnt go on that cruise for the ports, but for the group of great people in team splendor. when I heard we werent going to any ports in mexico, I wasnt bummed at all.....but looking out at the other people on the beach and the jet skiers and para sailors was certainly a beautiful site. no Im not whining, I had a great cruise and I personally would feel a little guilty asking for a refund, but If carnival throws me a bone, I would be happy to put it towards my next cruise......now im looking forward to future things to be seen...though some people are calling this the cruise from hell, I cant imagine any onboard experience being any better than last week on the splendor......

I'm still amazed at how blue the water is. We're from Florida so we go to the ocean a lot.

It's the same ocean, but some how it looks drastically different from here to there.

The blue-ness of the water has everything to do with..

whether the sand bottom is a white, calcium carbonate sand bottom or not! ;)

That's what reflects the sunlight, thru the water

to give us the amazing turquoise colour we so love

-best seen here at Bottom Bay over on the S-E coast of Barbados.

No I did not alter the cyan's in this shot

although admittedly it was a particularly-turquoise day

and I had to take the shot, knowing it would come in useful some day

Today is that day! ;) :)

Bottom Bay's just like that...sorry!

On our first cruise, on 4/22/2009 in Roatan, got up early and was out.

I saw a wonderful sight of moon and a star.

We were on Carnival Victory, heading towards St. Maarten, same date 22nd. April, 2009

saw the exact same astronomical ocurrence

and caught it on camera, albeit verry-wide-angle and not as big as your image shows it up.

you can just about make out the little white dot that's the moon.

On our very first cruise on the Triumph I loved the daily ritual of going on the balcony and enjoying the sunsets and sunrises. Another day when we were out at sea, we saw a beautiful rainbow and I just thought how awesome God is with His creations. I can't seem to put the pictures in this message, but check out my pictures on the link below. :)

On the first morning of Our Alaska cruise, our 11 year old got up and opened the curtians to our balcony. He immediately said he saw a whale! We all rushed out on the balcony in our PJs. It was if the whale had come to welcome us!

I routinely rush out in a heckuva lot less than my PJ's.

My wife always giggles. I don't see what's so funny, do you?

Thank God for those balcony dividers, I reckon..

The color of the water never ceases to amaze me. But when we pulled into Costa Maya, it was the most beautiful deep teal I have ever seen. It made such an impression on me that when I returned home, I immediately painted my bedroom and tried to replicate the color. Now every time I go to bed, that gorgeous dark turquoise takes me right back there.

Best memory was our cruise this past January. Wife and I brought our 3 boys for their 1st cruise... the looks on their faces when they boarded and explored the common areas was priceless. They became junkies immediately. We have since booked another family cruise. It will be my 1st with a balcony so I am looking foward to whatever Mother Nature decides to show me.... cant waite !!!

I was constantly mesmerized by the deep navy blue color of the rollers at sea. The wake of the ship, with its multi-toned turquoise and sea-foam layers were pretty, and I sat for a while near NCL Dawn's casino port window watching the bow wave's frothing as it spread out from the side of the ship, but when the sea wasn't breaking it had the color and visual texture of deep blue/indigo coal with tiny facets of differently refracted light.

Utterly calming.

I was on a boat (not a ship) with friends out of San Carlos, Mexico and headed back to the marina for a flight back to Tucson. The engine broke down, we couldn't go anywhere (and I discovered that the airport was closed the following day so I wasn't going anywhere real soon). All of a sudden the boat was surrounded by dolphins of all sizes. The engine sprang to life and the dolphins followed right along with us. I had never seen a dolphin at sea before and think the grin on my face was plastered there for a long time. It's still one of my favorite sea memories!!

We simply are not picture takers. We go on cruises with a film camera, a digital and an underwater camera, and often never take a shot. Can't say why, just neither one of us does.

Anybody have pics of "The Baths"?

Or google, The Baths.

The rock formations are incredible.

Hands down best I ever saw was a total eclipse of the sun off the coast of Mexico! It was nothing short of magical. When the eclipse was nearly over, and it was getting light again, a whole school of dolphins showed up and leaped in and out of the water all over the place like they were trying to figure out what was going on. Wonderful. :)

I'm with ya on that. I figure I can buy a postcard that shows most sights better than I could picture them (though realizing that there are 'happenings' that can only be captured live in person). I just don't want to remember my vacation time as mainly time spent peering through the viewfinder.

Hi All:)

I'd have to say our Legend cruise of 2005. It was our second cruise, 14 yo sons first, and at the Captains past guest reception party we looked on stage and there was our shy 14 yo dancing with a young lady. The next day when looking at the formal pictures we found him unexpectedly again with TWO cute girls on his shoulders. It was a wonderful surprise and assured us he'd have a good time on his first cruise!!!:D

But otherwise I'd agree that the first time you see the Full moon gleaming off the ships wake late at night is a sight you can never forget!

BOB:)

Last summer on CB on the Atlantic the ocean was DEAD calm -not a ripple or wave .It looked like molten lead or navy blue ice VERY EERIE .It was unbelievable and beautiful .

Also a full moon on the Atlantic .the sea was purple WOW !!!

Antigua ...the colour of the water -shades and shades of turquoise

First time sailing in St Thomas ..beautiful port ,rising mountain ,all those sail boats

Snorkeling on top of beautiful coral reefs teeming with fish which you can only see once you put your head in the water

Arriving at port and seeing your ship ready to sail ...how special is that!!!!

We had seas like that leaving Grand Turk last summer and heading home. Not a ripple or wave - just completely flat. Really amazing looking. You could actually see the reflection of the ship in the water even though we were moving at a pretty good clip.
