The Prepaid Gratuities Removed List

Well, I was unaware that a staff person was required to turn in the little white enevelope that I give them. ---- I'm not doubting what you say, just that I was not aware. I generally only read these boards prior to an upcoming cruise, so I obviously have missed the tipping posts.

Oliver

If you leave the auto-tip in place AND give them cash, in hand or in a 'little white envelope', the tippee KEEPS the entire amount [ON CARNIVAL, each line has their own different methods] If the auto-tip is removed, the worker must turn in ALL cash received to the pool.

Some lines, even Carnival owned lines, all tips are pooled. But that is not true on ships with the Carnival brand

Both Aggieastrosfan and I were together during this event and she actually saw the list and pointed it out to me, we laughed and took pictures. There were way to many to count on that one list, Each party would have the number of passengers under a set table for example one would read 2 for I guess 2 passengers and others would read 25 etc. I can not give you the exact amount as that part of the list has been edit out and deleted.

Fred

DELETED??

Call your computer guru. Retrieve those names! We want them POSTED on the boards!!!:D:D

just kidding.

An interesting tidbit I learned at the 3 card poker table last week...

We all probably knew that the casino tips are pooled and shared. What I didn't realized is that they are pooled and shared among dealers on ALL Carnival ships. Which makes NO sense to me.

i just love these "tip" cat fights.....but especially because everybody (well, the pro-tip group) always assumed/maintained there were NO Lists. If I was in the anti-auto-tip group, I'd plaster this everywhere.

If I worked for Carnival, I'd NEVER let such a list become public.

If I worked in a capacity to receive such a list, you bet I'd NOT be able to look at my stateroom guests the same.

All this just weeks after this ex-waiter got the absolute best service (cruiseline and non-cruise line) of my life, with the auto-tip on and extra envelopes to those staff that made it so great.

That doesn't mean I don't still believe the cruiselines use auto-tip to screw their own employees by using it as a tool to depress/justify their low wages.

WHEN are the non-tippers going to admit they're cheap?

WHEN are the pro-tippers going to admit they're sycophants for corporate greed?

and can we all agree on just how stupid it was to leave this list in public?

It was not left in public.

I have my doubts that the staff would reduce level of service to the tip-pullers based on the staff I have gotten to know, but it is certainly not something I would want them to know if I was a non-tipper. For those cheapskates that want to pull their tips, the key is to do it last-minute I guess.;)

I still have them. :D

But, did you get a supper club wine list???

and I will be brokering the sale of this list. :p:D

Note to self: check ebay.

I know it's a little off the topic (or is it?) but where do those that completely pre-pay gratuities fall in?

My H and I prefer to prepay them when we pay off our cruise (which for our Splendor sailing is today, woohoo) and then if we receive above-and-beyond service on board, we tip additionally in cash.

Do our waiters, stewards and the like know we paid our tips before we even set foot on the ship?

Obviously, we don't have gratuities posted to our S&S...

Looking at the date:

Could this have been people who got off the ship early in Long Beach????

Of course, this was on the Splendor. I personally left my gratuities on and gave extra to my personal staff. But others I spoke with that got off in LB didnt want to tip for all 7 days when they were only on the ship for 4. They took them off and tipped cash at the end.

This is a list I found during my exploration of Splendor this past week, Now, there could be many reasons why many people removed the Tips, one would be that they would like to pay cash at the end of their cruise. That is the way it used to be done. Today Carnival charges your Sail & Sign account automatically and if you want you can add to it or remove it and you can tip cash instead. We like to just leave it alone and tip extra at the end of the cruise as we did this past week.

I'd love to have a bug in the Carnival meeting where this is brought up.

I truly wonder if those who remove the gratuities and claim to tip 100% in cash understand that, in doing so, the intended recipients end up with less than if they simply left the auto-tips in place and tipped extra in cash?

As explained many times on these boards and elsewhere, *if* a passenger removes the auto-tips and gives cash, the staff person is required to turn in those payments and they are pooled. *If* a passenger leaves the auto-tips in place and gives the staff extra in cash, they are allowed to keep 100% of the extra for themselves.

Or is it really that the passengers who do this, don't really care who ends up with the money, they just get a thrill out of lording over the hired help with the little white envelopes?

Uh huh, thought so.

How many of you actually tip your hair dresser, your nail person, your massage person, waiter or waitress before they performed their service. I certainly dont. Ive never removed the tips on a Carnival cruise and when I cruised RC they didnt add them to your account, they gave you envelopes. I actually had a really bad steward one cruise (didnt clean the room for 2 days, left no clean towels, had to call for them and got yelled at for waking him up...etc..) and I left his tip and was crucified by people on these boards for leaving a tip. All 3 of my kids are waiters/waitresses and would never expect a tip before they did their job.

A quick trip to the Purser's Desk on the FIRST day your room wasn't tended would have solved that problem immediately.

Sorry right back atcha. There is no reason or excuse to remove tips...none.

It's simply an excuse to not tip at the recommended amount...or at all. Not buying the story at all.quote]

Regardless if you "Buy my story" or not, I know what I tip and know that I do not stiff the crew for their efforts to please me when I cruise. Your accusation regarding the way I tip (or don't tip according to you) is just incorrect and rude !

I agree 100%. There is NO reason' date=' ever, to remove the basic minimum gratuities. Those who do are simply looking for ways to stiff those hard working folks. No matter what excuses they use, it's an attempt to not tip at all.

That's one reason autotips were added in the first place. Too many deadbeats simply walked off the ship without recognizing anyone for their service.

Personally, I think this extra fee should be mandatory...even added in to the price of the cruise. In any case, there should be no way to remove or reduce them. If people can't afford to tip...they shouldn't cruise...or eat out in restaurants, stay in hotels, use baggage porters, taxi's, transportation services or any other service where it is customary to tip.[/quote']

WOW! I finally agree with you on something.:D:D:D

OK, I'm one of the whiners that left the ship on Thursday. . . too many sea days make me sick. I travel for the ports! I went to the purser - what a chore (with all the obnoxious people abusing carnival employees). What a shame, they were powerless. I was told there was no way to adjust the tips based on being on the ship 4 days except to take it out and tip in cash. So I guess my name is on the list. . . I would never purposely stiff any of those wonderful hard-working folks!

I disagree. If your service has been bad you have every right to reduce the amount of the gratuity you pay to your waitstaff or cabin steward. I've only experience less than excellent service a couple of times, so have at least left the minimum, but if I had a truly bad time of it, I wouldn't feel the least bit guilty about letting it be known via my pocketbook.

I am so glad to know this! Thank you for posting it. I think it is absolutely fair for the crew to know in advance who is not paying them gratuities. If someone chooses to withhold the automatic gratuities and pay cash at the end of the cruise, I would think it would be wise for them to advise the crew members of their plans. As for DH and me, we will continue to leave the automatic gratuities in place and give them extra cash for good service. Most of these people work very hard to make our cruise a "better than expected" experience. We believe they deserve a little extra money for their efforts.

So let me see if I understand. If you give the steward money on day 1,day,3 and day 5 of a seven day cruise they must turn it in all week or keep a detailed log of every cabin and person who has given them anything during the week?

They have no way of knowing that you won't remove them on the morning of the last day.

Steve
